Many people are disappointed about this. Aliran has just issued the following statement:
It is deeply disturbing to see dedicated politicians of integrity being dropped by Pakatan Harapan as candidates for the next general election.

While most people are in festive mood or caught up with election fever, the draft Penang Island Local Plan is now up for public display and comment. Except most people are unaware of it.
This is shaping up to be a battle royale, a real David vs Goliath battle.
Social reform group Aliran has come out with a media statement:
Aliran is dismayed that Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob has capitulated to pressure from certain quarters for an early general election despite the impending monsoon season.
Under intense pressure for months from his Umno bosses, the PM today announced the dissolution of Parliament paving the way for a general election that could be during the upcoming monsoon season.
Let’s talk about things Penang, including what the coming general election means for the state. There is an extra dimension in the polls for Penang, with multi-cornered contests expected.
As the general election approaches, share your thoughts on the critical issues of the day.

These Penang lang hit global headlines for all the wrong reasons:
The People’s Agenda is organising its fourth webinar in the ‘Reclaim our nation’ series, this time on the fourth concern of its five-point agenda:
4. Save democracy and uphold the rule of law
The High Court has found Rosmah Mansor guilty of corruption in relation to the hybrid solar project for Sarawak schools. Imagine how many schools and schoolchildren could have benefited from the funds.
As the general election approaches, share your thoughts on the critical issues of the day.
Doku-Andrew participated in a “fisherman for a day” programme recently and became more convinced that the reclamation project, spanning 4,500 acres off the coast of southern Penang Island, should be stopped.
A heavily strapped Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik staged a remarkable comeback in Tokyo from 12-18 down in the first game before cruising past Indonesia’s Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan in the second, winning 21-19, 21-14 to bag Malaysia’s first ever gold medals in the world badminton championship and set the tone for the country’s Merdeka and Malaysia celebrations.
With Najib Razak imprisoned, the fissures in Umno are being laid bare. Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob appears to be under intense pressure from the party’s ‘court cluster’ ie those with court cases who are now unnerved by Najib’s jailing.
With the Federal Court’s decision today to uphold the High Court guilty verdict after a four-year emotional roller coaster, some ghosts have been finally laid to rest.
As I write this, immediately after the verdict was announced, a light shower is falling where I am in Penang, as if cleansing the nation.
So do you think we can justify all the mega-reclamation projects going on all over Malaysia?
It looks like the general election will be held sooner rather than later, given that Umno has inexplicably been allowed to delay its elections beyond the existing three-plus-one-and-a-half-years extension earlier granted.
But this could be a poisoned chalice as the factional infighting within the party drag the party down if not lead to full-blown implosion. Let’s see how this plays out.
The issue of diversity and inclusion, one of the five points of the People’s Agenda, is shaping up to be major factor in the looming general election – for it will determine what kind of Malaysia we have in the years to come.
