In these photos along Green Lane, you will see some of the trees we stand to lose because of our obsession with cars, the MPPP’s short-sighted road-widening plan and the federal government’s failure to provide a decent public transport system.
The RM7.3m tender for the road-widening work was awarded in April 2012, but the MPPP only invited NGOs for a ‘consultation’ on 30 November, just days before the trees are to be removed.
An officer in one civil service department has revealed that he and his colleagues were required to attend the PM’s Jelajah event on Saturday despite it being their day off.
A dead dolphin was spotted washed up on the shore in Butterworth on Sunday. Blog reader Batu Ferringhian suggests another reason why dolphins are dying:

The political awakening in Johor is not limited to the state capital Johor Bahru, but other towns in the states – like the Umno stronghold of Batu Pahat – are stirring too.
News reports have mentioned Penang Umno Liaison Committee chairman Zainal Abidin Osman as saying 50000 people are expected to throng USM tomorrow morning to attend a programme themed “People’s Housing” as part of Najib’s Promises Fulfilled Tour.
Update (7 December 2012): After this article appeared in The Herald in April 2011, plans to demolish this heritage building Church of the Nativity, Butterworth were quietly put on hold. Now talk has surfaced in the parish about demolishing the building to make way for some large pastoral centre. Plans for this centre could be scaled down so that the old church building is not affected and the greenery preserved.

Guest writers Ahmad Chik and Loh-Lim Lin Lee add to the growing disquiet over the MPPP’s plan to remove dozens of trees from Green Lane and supposedly ‘transplant’ some of them elsewhere.
It was a full house of around 2000 diners at the MCA-Gerakan unity dinner along Jalan Raja Uda in Butterworth last night – but not everyone was paying attention to the main speakers who included Ng Yen Yen.
Check out the diners paying little attention to the speakers:

The ill-conceived road-widening along Green Lane will ‘sacrifice’ dozens of trees along Green Lane – and this is only just the beginning. Is this what we want?
