The rise and fall of the ‘LRT’

Check out this video about the elevated light rail system in Singapore, especially the comparison with buses and trams at street level.

It has some important lessons for sustainable mobility planning in Malaysia, including in Penang.

We already have wasted so much time with the expensive and unsustainable “PTMP” in Penang. It is time to dump it and opt for a more sustainable mobility plan.

Sustainable mobility is to walk to your neighborhood to shop and dine. It helps you to stay healthy, it helps the environment with less carbon release, it helps small time traders and hawkers to sustain business earn livings instead of cash outflow to bigger franchised stores with foreign ownership in the malls.

Make Malaysian roads pedestrian friendly

Otherwise Malaysians will have an excuse not to walk to LRT stations.

Even Penang a tourist destination ignores proper pedestrian walkways.

You can see many trees (even new condo projects of the past 12 years) are planted on the pedestrian walkways.

Choice of plant species is also overlooked. Overgrown roots destroy the pedestrian pavement.

When pedestrian path is blocked by tree, and a person has to walk over to roadside and being knocked down by a motor vehicle, who can be sued for such mishap?

Cuba fikir fikir……

Dont think penang is like USA plenty of land. To utilise the space fully, they have to share. Not many people walk or cycle. Why everyone complain about sharing? Penang is much smaller than Sink apor and Sink apor has blown itself larger by 35% and build into the heavens or into hades. LKY said land are not meant for cars. You need land to collect rainwater too.

Trees are not planted in the predestrian foot path but next to it to PROVIDE SHADE and COOLING and partly RAIN SHELTER. Go to Saigon and on the way to Chalon rows of trees on both side of the road and very pleasent to cycle or walk. Further in development cetain % are reserved for landscape and green

Designated for trees and designated for pedestrians – do not mix but they can be side by side. The reason not possible is land constraint to cater for increasing motor vehicles.

With Penang Transport Master plan (eg LRT) cannot proceed as funding from 3 islands reclaimation cannot materialise.

So GE15, we wait for manifesto from DAP, MCA and Gerakan on transportation bottlenecks.

Worse, MCA BN in KL allow warungs and non non to set up stalls. At nights, they will put up tables and chairs and occupy part of the road and slow the traffic. There is no more road shoulders. It is unhygenic with road dust settle onto the door and dish washing which is oily water and leftover food are done in STORMWATER and not sewer. This attracts cockroaches and rats. CM Chow so far only speeds up projects he has control over.

It is clear that PTMP is too ambitious. Now no smooth sailing forthat 3 southern islands reclaimation so no funding coming for LRT.

Could it be CM Chow not able to execute PTMP and after GE15 possible return of LGE to kick-start the complete PTMP?

Nevertheless, so much money (Anil can advise accumulated cost to date in Aliran) have been spent on design and feasibility studies so wasted opportunity cost with the delay execution of PTMP.

Any Rapid Transit is ambitious and costly. If to do later, it cost more. It takes years to complete. More buildings below, same level and up in the air will be more difficult to construct and hence the cost. Rapid Transit takes years to construct, then testing of the trains or trams and then precommissioning. Sinkapore was advised by Yankee Traffic consultants to use ALL BUSES. LKY … introduce away. Riding MRT is stylish, class, comfortable, puunctual and safe as stns and train

The powerful industries include AP, manufacture and repair of cars, spare parts, insurance, fuel, medical treatment, road construction and maintenance (highways, bridges, flyovers), and real estate (new townships that would be worthless if not for the clever routing of hignways),

As a parallel, consider the tobacco and gambling industries.

Why not, shriek. Praise be DAP for their kindness, for the free bus service project. Any other things they are giving free for Penangites, shriek ? What about the free money they are giving to seniors, beca riders, etc etc etc. Are these given freely out of compassion and concern for their welfare or is there some kinda, hidden agenda to it ?

No hidden agenda. My father visited China, as a Senior Citizen he gets Senior Concessions by showing his passport to show his age in admissions to places of interests. He visited his friend in NSW who pays $2.50 for whole day unlimited travel. No hidden agenda. As Senior, time for the state to pay back for services and tax Seniors have done. Now 80 years old have how long to go? Further they are no longer have any income. You do not know DAP a socialist party follows the european socialist?

P1A === That’s correct, Blogmaster. They should dump the whatever ‘PTMP’ and go back to the way it was when we moved around in the state of Penang. They should introduce upgraded electric driven buses, a few more bus shelters, support the use of beca and bicycles for short distance movement, encourage more walking in some parts of the town like Georgetown, etc etc etc. The re introduction of upgraded Ferries and the upgrading of its support facilities is a smart move. Bicycleways are built. YOU have a bicycle or 2 or 3 cars? PTMP is not a gloried program. Mel and Syd and China spending billions on LRTs, HST to improve public transport. Ukraine war cause petrol > USD 100/barrel and Glasglow to cut CO2 and warming .Otherwise big storms and island drown in rising seawater.

Buses like smoking gemitting fumes and contribute to sea rise and drown Penang? The Road gets more congested. Some roads are 50 years ago and meant for bullock carts. Most roads are under Cityhall andthe state and tries to improved the roads.

There has to be a better understanding among Malaysians of why the ringgit has weakened but the inflation rate is well-maintained.

They have to know how subsidised fuel has kept prices stable for us despite the ever-increasing oil prices.

Otherwise, Malaysians will simply believe everything they read on social media about the economy and the value of the ringgit.

If one actually believes that Lajak bikes have the right of way on the streets and in the event of an accident, the need to provide proof of one’s innocence, is by way of an installed car camera then the intelligent thing to do is to simply install one in one’s car. Why the need ” He should advise us”?

Car cameras’ are easily available and there are no restriction in its installation and usage.

Mr Anil,

About time to start new discussion topic on “The rise of food price and the fall of Ringgit value” – this has caused hardship to many people. But our Keluarga Malaysia government has no new strategy beyond control chicken price and give more subsidies which is no remedy is in medium/long term.

Food price expected to go up again in May because of the implementation of RM1500 minimum wage as announced by PM at Umno assembly – no consideration for productivity improvement, only add to cost of production.

1 SingDollar is now RM3.17, especially after PAP government tighten it’s monetary policy to appreciate SingDollar to combat inflation (Singapore rely on oil and food import).

Expect more to head south to work in Singapore now the borders are open. We could face another round of brain drain, since Keluarga Malaysia government is still clueless on improving our economy (Ringgit), beating inflation, creating value-added jobs.
