Is the Kuala Lumpur-Singapore high-speed rail project a good idea?

104

Not from the perspective of Malaysia, says investment analyst Tan Teng Boo.

Check out the video below.

Teng Boo makes a useful distinction between economic growth and economic development (which involves socioeconomic aspects, environmental consideration and quality of life).

The high-speed rail project may boost economic growth during construction. But is it really beneficial for the Klang Valley given the disparity in gross domestic product (GDP) per capita between the two countries.

Teng Boo suggests the rail project will increase the cost of living in the Klang Valley due to an influx of visitors from Singapore, just as people in Johor Bahru gripe about the higher cost of living for the same reason.

It might make it easier for medical tourists from Singapore – but will that result in more government doctors quitting the public service?

The other main point he makes is that it might worsen the brain drain in Singapore’s favour.

As an alternative, Teng Boo suggests that the Malaysian government look into boosting domestic connectivity within Malaysia. (He argues that the ETS trains are not fast or frequent enough to boost connectivity.)

If the country had a decent domestic rail option, we wouldn’t have to worry about the brain drain worsening, while it could spur the growth of regional hubs within the country, like Ipoh, Butterworth and Kuantan.

Replying to Calvin S; There are a lot of us who understand what you are saying. The whole picture is clear to see. It is just that there are certain laws that prevent us, the Rakyat, from openly discussing it. However, these laws do not stop us from forming our own personal opinions in private. Perhaps, this could be the reason why TTB approaches the subject matter from the angle of Brain Drain. If one understands what brain drain actually means then one should understand that it has very little to do with the high-speed rail service from KL to Singapore. Its a very tough world out there with high interest rates, low food production, increasing food demand due to increasing population. We also have 2 wars being waged and the coming trade war with China. And back home we have a country with bad balance sheet. Total income hardly covers fix expenses like subsidies, interest payment, administrative cost, pensions etc. Any money needed for building schools, hospitals or roads have to be borrowed pushing our debts to more than one and half trillion.

What did the hypocritical supporters say about MCA, claiming it prioritized its personal interests over the community’s?

Now, what about DAP’s situation in Selangor? Where will their clueless supporters hide their faces now?

“Ta-ta to the Turf Club?” by Alex Teng, David Tan and Bernard See

Since Penang State has been complaining about lack of water availability by 2030, since it keeps approving more and more factories to be build, more and more housing projects being approved, means more and more concrete, bricks and mortar, the State government should buy the turf land and turn it into a water reservoir for the people of Penang state.

Hello State government and PBAPP, Can or not ?

We hear that Construction = Development. The bigger the project, the bigger the amount accounted for under “contingency”. In Klang Valley, the MRT/LRT projects brought paralysis of economy in the immediate neighbourhoods for years, besides demolition of buildings and flight of buinesses. Unsupervised road works are a close runner-up as a menace. Now, Penang will not escape this insanity.

Penang will not escape this insanity.” Indeed! Already, they are saying there is not enough water and not enough land and yet they want to bring in more investments and by that it means building more factories which means more clean water has to be diverted to them instead of us Rakyat. And now we do not know what is happening to food security.

Why not ask why grow durian trees? Only only harvest twice a year and not every Penang Kias eat durian? Why you dont tell them to grow padi and vegetables which we eat everyday. You feel more security with durians? They have thorns to prickle you

Believe Penang is already over developed with concrete, mortar and bricks. That is why they are saying no more land and short of water. How much clean water are they now diverting to the factories now? More factories, more water needed for them.

Sea channel also not spared. Concrete pillars jutting out from the sea with more ugly concrete pillars coming soon to support electric cables for more factories.

Rakyat 8 think- if reservoir is on flat ground, how can water flow to your house? You must be smarter than Newton to make water flow uphill to houses and low level flats? You can be Manager of PBA. If reservoir on flat ground, it is a public swimming pool…

Penang Race Course is not in Penang hill. It is on lower flat ground. You quote so much from news but you are clueless. They say there is not enough of rain and has to cloud seed. It is cheaper if you go and dance like American Indians. You think Muda River is Amazon? Even Yangtze water level went down once. You clueless about Water yield. Better if you talk to your MCA in Perak for more water like Oliver Twist – Can I have more?

It is but a suggestion. The land cost 6 million Ringgit. Not sure if the state government will be interested in buying the land and convert it into a water reservoir.

No point arguing about it unless the state claims they wish to buy the turf land and want to convert it into a water reservoir but it is not possible because it is a flat land. Then can go into a full argument.

Meantime, the Youtube video sufficiently addresses the flat land argument.

You are clueless, You need a dam to store unpolluted water. All lembu kuda water is polluted. unless you are the jaga. Why stored treated clean water when there is not enough of untreated water. Why you started to call your neighbours to harvest rainwater and then send them by your car to the water plant?

In Kl, lemba kuda is used to build the twin tower. Now the property is worth higher than the twin tower and can build more reservoirs

” Teng Boo’s argument is that because of the disparities ……”

Yes, but for Teoh to suggest that the high-speed rail project will lead to a brain drain is not convincing, a poor argument.

Wouldn’t it be more appropriate or accurate to say that the project could make it easier for labor to move between Malaysia and Singapore due to Singapore’s strong economy and higher salaries, potentially causing labor shortages in Malaysia rather than using the term ‘Brain Drain’ to prove his point.

Senior Rakyat. You build train for what? To carry goods and cattle. Cattle will die if the train s too slow and only senior take cattle class train? If tech can allow to build electric train and faster train, do it. You want to gostan by build bullock cart train

A Rakyat 8

To elaborate further, the term “brain drain” typically implies a one-way movement of highly skilled and educated individuals leaving one country for another typically in search of better job and career opportunities, higher salaries and a more favorable living environment.

In the context of the high-speed rail project between Malaysia and Singapore, it is more likely that easier transportation and better job opportunities in Singapore could lead to labor shortages in Malaysia rather than a one-sided brain drain scenario.

Brain drain will continue with or without HSR. It may facilitate homecoming but still work is done is Singapore for the benefit of Red Dot!

Yes, Singapore will benefit from our Malaysian talent and labor, and our Rakyat will benefit from the money they earn in Singapore.

This is what the High-Speed Rail (HSR) could potentially do – facilitate the movement of our Rakyat talent and labor, back and forth, rather than causing a brain drain.

If Singapore goes one step further by covering transportation costs, it could lead to a decline in our nation’s overall progress and possible foreign direct investments.
