What do health care, press freedom and football have in common?

Our pitiful global ranking, that’s what. Look at our global ranking for public health care spending as a percentage of GDP.

Not much different from where we stand in terms of press freedom and football, is it? Reporters Without Borders places Malaysia in 122nd spot for press freedom in 2011/2012 while Fifa ranks us at No. 150 for football as at 15 February 2012.

As you can see below, Malaysia, at close to 2 per cent for public health care spending as a percentage of GDP, is well below the global average of close to 6 per cent. In fact, at 2 per cent, we are closer to the Burma government, which spent only 0.2 per cent of GDP on health care in 2009, than we are to the global average of almost 6 per cent.

Is it any wonder we don’t have enough funds to finance our public health care system? That’s before even looking into any mismanagement, wasteful spending and the rising cost of privatised health care support services for our general hospitals.

People like to pretend that they are saint enough to warrant a ticket to heaven. But actually they are “syiok sendiri”. For example, some people like to say “I hate corruption”. But after being caught using handphone when driving, we will hear a familiar phrase such as “boleh tolong” or “boleh settle” being exchanged by the same “I hate corruption” saint. People tend to imagine but actually they have no personal experience in the topic they have talked about. Wow, we spend less when compared with USA in health care. APA SUDAH JADI ??? But in fact people in general… Read more »

What does our “improvement” in the rankings for corruption mean? It means that the big boys (capitalists who are interviewed for such surveys) are not being “disturbed” as much as before. It does not reflect the extortion of ordinary folk, who in addition are suffering from worsening income inequality – now a global phenomenon, thanks to capitalists.

One of the cheapest, most comprehensive and most EFFECTIVE health admin systems is Cuba’s. This is despite half a century of economic sanctions aginst it by a certain Big Brother. They even send their professionals to many developing countres to train locals. Being an equatorial country like us, they can teach us many dramatic improvements. Ah, but there will be no side money.

…Football we are almost close to last!

Soh Chin Aun, Santok Singh, James Wong & Moktar Dahari of the 70’s Malaysian/Asian football giants would have cried day and night together at Mamak’s football cafe upon seeing this dismal status of Gila Bola Malaysia!
