A wacky tribute to Penang street food

An unusual two-part tribute to Penang street food by Stanley Yu, who is originally from Hong Kong but now lives in London.

Notice, he largely avoided the upmarket ‘touristy’ food courts and found street food at its best – close to street level.

The main downside about Penang street food these days is that it has generally crossed – or is on the verge of crossing – the RM4 price tag per noodle dish. I suppose that reflects the rising prices of essentials especially foodstuff.

But the char koay teow plate seems to be getting smaller – little larger than a saucer in some places.

Penang got any strategic plan for the preservation and future prospects of our Ori-Maestros? Much has been discussed in anilnetto.com but no strong measures taken by the state gomen. Not even a museum to start with. It may be a little too late since the first state trans-emigration of our Ori-Maestros to SS2 Petaling Jaya in the 80’s. Anthony Bourdain is hooked by Penang street food.
How can he give up 1) affordable, 2) heavenly and 3) heritage ambience food binge?
Take out any one of the 3 factors, I will not be too sure he will be back.
Street hawkers @ New Lane should know very well than I do.

many worry that New Lane hawkers may increase the food prices now 2 famous folks (Bourdain & Samantha Brown) dined there.

sometimes it is better to have lower profile otherwise the fame can cause inflation.

Most likely the case of price increase.
With fame & building of rich man’s homes in Pg Island beyond the reach of many, the temptation to earn more is too great & unavoidable.
LGE said money makes money.
Educate the common folks about wealth creation and many Penangites will be rich, some famous and wealthy to continue enjoying Penang makan-makan.

I have not seen organised tours on Penang hawker food. I had friend who came with his family and extended family from Sabah, Ipoh and Australia in two cars in December last year. What we did was we had late breakfast at Swee Kong cafe in Pulau Tikus. We ordered a plate or two of mee mamak, char koay teow, hokien char and pasembuk and ate buffet style.Also had ban chean koay from the market nearby. I luuuuuv Penang Street Food: the heavenly chiak-chiak, the affordable yum-yum, the heritage ambience shiok-shiok only can see and touch in Penang Island.

typical hawker or street food like noodles now at RM4-/plate minimum and can’t fill the tam chiak kui stomach. Actually I have to disagree on the lard. There is a coffee shop opposite the police HQ at Dickens Street which serves halal char koay teow done by a chinese. The first time I tried, I did not know that it was halal and it tasted like the original

I suspect (not based on facts demanded by Jaguh boyscout) that many hawkers are caught in the frenzies of wildebeests’ rainy green-horned speculating in property market. Why work so damn hard, but ‘see cannot touch’ these rich man’s homes? Might as well raise prices (for the same amount of work what) since things got to this expensive state of affairs. Then can say to jealous engineers, lawyers and doctors that hawkers buying million ringgit homes also successful career men mah! many of my chinese friends who can afford expensive gadgets are children of so called street hawkers.
it’s a myth that street hawkers work hard, gamble hard as well BUT they take care of thier children. They spent hours working to earn money and compensate thier “lost bonding hours” with their children by pampering them with expensive gadgets. Those who gamble away their hard earned money (on ekor 4D) of course cannot do so.
