These are scenes of Nizar at Penanti on Nomination Day and of a ceramah last night at the main Pas operations centre, as polling day approaches tomorrow. “Postal balloting” involving police personnel has already taken place.
In the PKR campaign, national issues have taken centre-stage, especially the Perak power grab and Najib’s role in it as well as his – apa nama – ‘political baggage’. Perak State Assembly member Chang Lih Kang impressed the mainly Malay crowd last night with religious verses and a little pantun:
Harapkan pagar
Pagar makan padi
Harapkan Adun
Adun lompat parti
The PKR candidate, Mansor Othman, has tried to steer his campaign to local issues. He has highlighted his role a decade ago in kick-starting the Tekun micro-credit programme, which was later taken over by the federal government. Mansor claimed in the ceramah last night that after it was taken over by the federal government, local Umno leaders had a big say in determining whether loan applications were successful.
He also said that he would work hard to ensure comfortable, affordable housing with adequate space for larger families and provide support for small traders.
Meanwhile, the police presence is again visible with two large canopy sites set up near Bukit Mertajam and Penanti, according to a local resident.

Pasir Mas MP is a liability to UMNO. His rhetoric concerning the PAS government in Kelantan will make the electorate favour PAS more to win in Manek Urai. UMNO should allow the Jeli MP to do the talking and not the Pasir Mas MP. The less the latter talk the better chance for UMNO. However, winning Manek Urai from PAS is as good as impossible in the present scenario.
BN’s refusal to contest in Penanti has made many of their supporters unhappy. Many will vote for PR candidate to show their displeasure. Looks like the Independent candidates are completely unacceptable by the people. Out of every 10 interviewed, 8 were for PR and 1 or 2 were non-commital. When asked about any chances of them voting for the Independents, the answer was a BIG no. Their view on candidate Aminah: No match to Mansor. The verdcit: PR will win solid.
I am one of many who really appreciate AN live reporting. Maybe AN is a modest man….however, not me; so those who appreciate his works as an independent journalist should take note of the grey little box on the top right corner of this blog with a go here red box. Thank you.;)
These by-elections has allowed PR to give exposure to their second tier leaders. The beauty here is many of the PR leaders are being more accepted by interparty members. As PR go through a few more by-elections, it will be able to thrash out many more interparty issues and become widely acceptable and will be the preffered party for most Malaysians.
When BN loses in Penanti and Manek Urai (and this is certain), it’s image will be further battered. It’s popularity will slide further.
If BN does not reinvent itself it will lose in the next general election. For BN to reinvent itself is difficult. The people seem to have decided now that they want a change. It’s political maturity among the people that has made Malaysians go for a 2-party system. A 2-party system is good for all Malaysians, though. They just want to have change. I suppose, they love PR more this time around.
Are malaysians living under democracy! or dictatorship ruling……UN is definitly a failed organisation
is that even a pantun?
Thanks Anil for your live coverage previously and tomorrow. We who are living away from the action scene depend on your site for up-to-date updates. As a subscriber, I’m quite fed up with Malaysiakini slow update and the traffic congestion to the site each time when important events like election takes place. They don’t even have dedicated channel for their paying subscribers.
BN will lose every election that it stands for. The only way they will win one is if they can cheat to the maximum. The way this country is moving under Najib is horrendous. They way the PDRM is working as UMBO/BN’s bodyguards is simply unacceptable. The Raykat is being cheated in every way. They steal from us and enrich themselves. Enough is enough…….. Wise people of Penanti, its your turn. When it is ours, will will deliver.
The moment of truth wll reflect on the outcome in Penanti and Manek Urai. Both will be won by PR (PKR/PAS). The sentiment on the ground does not favour BN, unfortunately. A clear indication that the people support PR.
From Sarawak, we have sent a team to Cover Penanti Live which will be hosted at http://linasoo.com.
The police recorded statement from Kit Siang and is going to obtain one from Goba. I understand that Goba has to report to the police station for mentioning the “woman cannot be named”. It seems that Anifah does not have to give statement even though he also mentioned the “woman cannot be named” in a PC at Washington.
LAST CALL TO THE VOTERS OF PENANTI:- MAKE A CROSS FOR PKR means VOTE FOR PKR. MY BEST WISHES TO THE VOTERS OF PENANTI.
thanks !
