Penang state election predictions and poll

Fishermen at work in the morning with Penang Island in the background - ANIL NETTO/ALIRAN

In six separate posts, I will be asking two pundits about their personal predictions on the outcome of the 12 August elections in six states.

First let me introduce these two, one from Pakatan Harapan and the other from Perikatan Nasional. Emen Jamal is the Tasik Gelugor PKR information chief while Abdul Rahman Kasim is the Tasik Gelugor Pas information chief.

To kick off this series of predictions, we will look at Penang. In the 2018 state election, PH won 37 seats out of 40 seats (67.2% of the popular vote, including Bersatu’s 2.2%), Barisan Nasional two (22.4%), and Pas one (9.8%) in the 2018 state election.

In the 2022 general election in Penang for parliamentary seats, the popular vote for PH-Muda dropped to 60.0%, BN’s share dropped to 15.2% while PN captured 24.0% of the popular vote.

What will be the impact of the massive land reclamation in southern Penang Island? Can PKR recapture lost ground in Permatang Pauh and other parts of the mainland?

Emen peers into his cystal ball and sees PH winning 39 seats this time! With the economy on a firmer footing, he expects a big swing among students towards the Anwar Ibrahim-led PH, while he thinks PN will be short of campaign funds. He feels the past three-way split in the ethnic Malay votes will now benefit the PH-Barisan Nasional alliance in its electoral battles against PN.

Rahman, for his part, forecasts PN to make sharp inroads, bagging 14 out of the 40 seats in Penang.

This is close to my own personal prediction of around 12 seats for PN in Penang, which is shared by a political scientist colleague of mine.

Now make your own prediction:

Talk about the issues that matter to you in Penang in the comments section below.

We hope to know predictions and commentary by old readers like tunglang (time to come back) to give their views on PRN matters especially for Penang.

Better to hear from ordinary rakyat than those politicians with hidden agenda and motive.

Southern Island reclamation is not an issue as voters are ultimately against the rising green wave to protect the inclusively of Penang. We have got Queensbay Mall and Gurney Plaza, so we do not need another Aeon like Kelantan to prove our development.

One Of The “Genius” Designs Of Penang Sentral – main entrance not accessible for pedestrians, built to suit cars only.

https://youtube.com/watch?v=klZ2-Ll5keM&feature=youtu.be

No consideration for walkability. Pedestrians not given priority.

NoNo

Penang Boleh design.
Bad impression to tourists.

DiMoo

Tourists can understand boleh stuck at developing forgo developed status. Just like still prefer semi-pro football instead of pro level. Go ask the rural folks you get the tak apa convenient answer

Shriek

Sentral is transport hub..people come by stage bus, express bus, ktm, ferries and they go to lower level not main gate. Cars with drop off and pick at upper level. Penang kias is behind time. Pedestrians are not to mixed with cars as they may get knocked down and gone with the wind. Look at KL Sentral, KL transport hub. They are build 20!years ago and Penang kias are 20 years behind.

Norris

Of a person has private car, he would drive and will not come to Penang Sentral to take bus or train. Get it?

Shriek

I get it but you don’t. U see the video? Poon KbKb about the main entrance. The main entrance is at upper floor where cars will ramp up and drop or collect passengers. He KbKb pedestrians have to walk up and share the same road as cars. Penang kias no sense. Why pedestrian walk up to upper level and down again to take ferries, ktm or buses? Penang hero to walk beside cars? Like motor lane, it is separated from cars. You go to KL Sentral and south transport hub, foot men is separated from cars

DiMoo

Aiyah you walk up and down then get thirsty and hungry, then you patronise the commercial food outlets the MRCB (my road cannot block) way.

shriek

only penang kias want to walk up and down the ramp for fun and self en tertainment. go to sentral? You mean Sentral dont have lifts, escalators or stair cases? There are many better and cooler place shopping and food court malls for you to cuci mata.

Shriek

There you hardly can get char kuew teow, one ton mee or hokkien mee. U get mamak or others.

Esme

Old terminal had open air food centre with affordable price but it had been replaced by air-conditioned Penang Sentral selling more expensive fast food.

luca

Any pedestrian will be bewildered and wonder how to walk to Penang Sentral as there is no proper walking path. Dangerous since buses moving around can knock you down as shown on this video:

Penang Cafe Sparks Pricing Debate With RM48.70 English Breakfast

https://www.therakyatpost.com/news/malaysia/2023/07/08/penang-cafe-sparks-pricing-debate-with-rm48-70-english-breakfast/#:~:text=A%20recent%20Facebook%20post%20about,and%20butter%2C%20and%20cherry%20tomatoes.

If Penang consumers can afford such high pricing menu, soon such high price will become a norm, encouraging even hawkers to raise their prices. So it is best not to support such luxury pricing food.

Mike

Penang fancy outlets are for selfie Instagram photos.
The menu are priced higher to account for high cost of investment in interior decoration.
Young generation likes the setting never the hiked up prices to pay, and if not careful may join many in debt with no savings for senior retiring age unless Madani can secure more monetary subsidies.

glissantia

The new “kopi tiam” everywheren thst try to emulate old decor, and run by younger people, are also expensive.

Luca

Young generation inheriting old Kopitiam would revamped to be selfie-worthy, add old antique stuff to match nostalgic decor but ultimately food price increased to be like Old Town White Coffee chain. Old pricing is sadly not preserved.

DiMoo

Go RETRO with decor but not at RETRO menu prices, or at least RETRO serving portions.

Luca

Oriental Kopi 华阳 is an example old Kopitiam revamped with higher price menu, followed the business formula of Old Town.

https://www.orientalkopi.asia/

Esme

If a bubble tea or a cup of Zus coffee can cost RM10, then cannot fault kopitiam or hawker centre to charge RM5 for their otherwise RM2 drink. Young generation growing up with good pocket money can and willing to pay, but when price up their parents have no choice but curse and forgo the drink.

Joy

No madani Rahmah coffee from Zus or Gigi. So better buy from local kopitiam to protect our heritage trade.

Luca

77-year-old Astrid Buffett, the wife of billionaire investor Warren Buffett, was heard complaining about having to pay $4 for a cup of coffee. Astrid reportedly said she “could get a pound of coffee” for the same price elsewhere.

https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/trends/warren-buffetts-wife-overhead-complaining-about-rs-300-coffee-at-billionaires-summer-camp-10967151.html

Esme
Azrul

Read before on internet that one Malaysian guy admitted spending RM700 a month at specialty coffee chain. He now regrets it as wasting money meant for his future!

Esme

Some parents allow their kids such indulgence because they do not want their kids to experience FOMO (fear of missing out), and to keep up with other people.

Luca

Shark Tank’s Kevin O’Leary expressly said that store-bought coffee is “such a waste of money.” He then referenced the fact that coffee can be made at home for pennies, at which point you can put it in a travel mug and bring it to work if you happen to report to an office. And in light of that, he thinks paying several dollars for a store-bought cup makes little sense.

PCH

Support local Penang coffee makers for them to sustain their businesses being able to compete with maga rich brand from abroad.

When you spend on starry coffee, you help to repatriate money to overseas bosses via local franchisors.

I just had a local brand (I can salute but cannot name the brand on Anilverse that disallows commercial advertising) kopi o costing me 37 Sen a packet, not inclusive boiled hot water or added sugar. Go try them yourselves.

Luca

Anil should allow local coffee vendors to advertise for a small fee (duit kopi).

shriek

RM48.70 IS CHIP CHIP. Try fly to Eng land and have their break fast. It cost you a nuclear bomb. But ang mos will come again and is very chip chip in Penang.

SamAng

Unfortunately Penang attracts mostly cheapskate … backpackers on budget eating only cheap hawker food.

Shriek

Now you know, many oppose building better facilities and hotels. Further they join commentators here eating roadside food.

Luca

Najib in prison complaint McDonald’s high Prices, surged more than 50% since 2017:

Big Mac surged 56%, from RM8.60 to RM13.40.

McChicken 86% increase, from RM5.00 to RM9.29, Filet-O-Fish and French Fries (L) have gone up by 40% and 73% respectively.

https://weirdkaya.com/najib-razak-mcdonalds-prices/

Norris

He should ask how much Mekdi meal would cost by the time he has completed his 12-year jail term.

Moses

Making knows the price so well. Maybe he order via Grab or Food Panda while in prison? Special treatment?

shriek

If dont take NS highway, can take trunk road. Dont take Mac take Ramlee.

Luca

Roadside Ramly burger stalls do not have 6% government tax.

Mekdi here has bumiputera franchisee, as good as local but has US pricing.

Ramly and Mekdi both Malay owned – Che Det must be very proud of this.

Buy Ramly burger patty from 99Speedmart or KK and make your own burger at home with Massimo buns – cheap and money savings away from the kpkb of Jibby.

Awal MK

If fast food is expensive and offer no good value, just boycott them. Support local hawkers who are mostly B40 required our aid!

glisantia

They claim to give you cheese and/or real meat in many items. Apart from the question of whether it is healthy, people here seem to believe these multi-nationals are so kind-hearted to give them genuine healthy food.

Luca

Since 2015 the World Health Organization (WHO) has categorized processed meats as carcinogenic to humans. This means that there is sufficient evidence that the consumption of processed meats causes colon cancer.

There is a wealth of evidence linking processed meats with the development of chronic diseases such as Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Mike

Ramlee Burger, even those served by roadside stalls are not cheap as you think. May be 20% cheaper than Yellow Arc’s, but still not affordable and healthy for daily indulgence.

SamAng

Your money for Mekdi went into their heavy tv advertising. Next time at Mekdi count the number of staff – why need so many now they want you to order and pay onlibe yourself on touch screen? I see most staff there are quite rilek although possibly earning min wage plus free happy meal.

glissantia

As long as such outlets are few, that is good. Someone wrote long ago that professionals working in the tourist industry are able to extract money from tourists painlessly.

Good idea. Capture videos of bad infrastructure in Penang that need upgrading and redesign. Penangites are so used to poor infrastructure that they are immune to it.

Brocky

The signage at the Bayan Lepas Airport bus stop should have the following information to be tourist friendly (mostly looking for bus going to George Town heritage zone),
1) Take Bus 401E goes to George Town heritage zone. Suggest alighting at Komtar (with a picture showing how Komtar look like);
2) Prepare exact fare of RM2.70 (no change provided by bus driver) to reach Komtar in 50-60 minutes.

Also put up a map showing the bus route, locations of popular hotels and hostels around Komtar.

Mike

RapidPenang or Airport Management can be purposely to omit such info on board so that Grab folks able to senang cari makan?

DiMoo

Shriek

Here everything can’t put up??? Election time, everything can put up?? More the merrier???

Azrul

Good idea to have LRT link from Island to mainland but what is more urgent is a comprehensive LRT network on the Island with the necessary feeder bus network so that more people will use public transportation than to own cars which is the main cause of massive traffic congestion on the Island itself. Driving on the island is really a nightmare especially during rush hour.

Mike

NGO Penang can organise daily fishing trips by boats around the coast of Penang. In that way, they can help to sustain traditional fishing methods for future generation to witness while able to provide financial means to the fishermen who prefer to stick to traditions and difficult to embrace new fishing (fish rearing to be precise) technology.

Then we will not see a lonely boat as depicted by Anil in this posting, but a squadron of touristy fishing boats inclusive of pink dolphins sightings. Win-win?

Mike

Can invite Astro Awani’s Melissa Idris of Consider This to cover the Penang Fishermen, with interviews done on fishing boats?

Btw, Dr Lim MF and Salma Khoo of Penang Forum have appeared on National TV. Can we expect Anil to appear next on TV???

https://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/category/nation/2023/07/16/ronnie-liu-to-stay-in-politics-non-partisan-style/

In fact, sometimes you can question the roles of NGOs that speak and write a lot but in the end may create awareness but no solid conviction to reach the goals.

glissantia

Good example: the consumer associations. Except for CAP which is now low on funds, all the rest stay as quiet as they can, making about 1 press statement a year.

SamAng

CAP used to make too much noises (for the sake of cheap publicity) such that their credibility had gone down as a result. If you follow CAP recommendations, you have to avoid lots of food. Wonder what is CAP stand on vaping?

Awal MK

Wan Saiful of Bersatu challenged Anthony Loke and claimed that the latter will definitely replace Chow Kon Yeow as Penang’s Chief Minister.
DAP has now confirmed that Chow will continue to lead Penang if PH wins the state back.
So Wan, eat your heart out and go fly kite or main gasing. This confirmed how wishy-washy you are….

DiMoo

Even if you put Anil as Rocketman or Dacingman in Batu Uban (no discredit to ex YB Kumaresan) or Paya Terubong (no discredit to ex YB YeohSH), Anil will bring Anilverse to Penang State Assembly.
However, if Anil decides to ditch NGO for Go, then he likely is on Socialist platform, which will cost him the fixed deposit for sure.

DAP chairman Lim Guan Eng has given his personal guarantee while Penang Umno chief Musa Sheikh Fadzir says the party will do everything in its power to give the unity candidates the votes.

PCH

Good day Mr Anil,

I hope you can encourage more of your colleagues at Aliran and Penang Forum to actively comments at anilnetti.com for mutual benefits between NGOs and normal ordinary folks like us.
We may agree to disagree and vice versa. Through the process of exchanging ideas or healthy debating of current affairs, the public can understand the difficult roles NGOs are facing, and can be motivated to help them reaching the goals.
Otherwise, ordinary folks like us tend to “syiok sendiri” in the minds of NGOs or the authorities???

Mike

NGO folks may behave like smart elites who prefer to interact among themselves, then quickly blaming the government for not listening to their so called better ideas.
So “ordinary folks” better understand democracy is not one person one vote, but one dollar one vote (quoted from Dr Lim of Penang Forum on Astro Awani’s Consider This).

Brocky

Some people like me are reluctant to share ideas with NGOs because NGOs are mostly inflexible in taking views that are not consistent with their belief.

Many NGOs are out of touch.
