Penang state election predictions and poll

Fishermen at work in the morning with Penang Island in the background - ANIL NETTO/ALIRAN

In six separate posts, I will be asking two pundits about their personal predictions on the outcome of the 12 August elections in six states.

First let me introduce these two, one from Pakatan Harapan and the other from Perikatan Nasional. Emen Jamal is the Tasik Gelugor PKR information chief while Abdul Rahman Kasim is the Tasik Gelugor Pas information chief.

To kick off this series of predictions, we will look at Penang. In the 2018 state election, PH won 37 seats out of 40 seats (67.2% of the popular vote, including Bersatu’s 2.2%), Barisan Nasional two (22.4%), and Pas one (9.8%) in the 2018 state election.

In the 2022 general election in Penang for parliamentary seats, the popular vote for PH-Muda dropped to 60.0%, BN’s share dropped to 15.2% while PN captured 24.0% of the popular vote.

What will be the impact of the massive land reclamation in southern Penang Island? Can PKR recapture lost ground in Permatang Pauh and other parts of the mainland?

Emen peers into his cystal ball and sees PH winning 39 seats this time! With the economy on a firmer footing, he expects a big swing among students towards the Anwar Ibrahim-led PH, while he thinks PN will be short of campaign funds. He feels the past three-way split in the ethnic Malay votes will now benefit the PH-Barisan Nasional alliance in its electoral battles against PN.

Rahman, for his part, forecasts PN to make sharp inroads, bagging 14 out of the 40 seats in Penang.

This is close to my own personal prediction of around 12 seats for PN in Penang, which is shared by a political scientist colleague of mine.

Now make your own prediction:

Talk about the issues that matter to you in Penang in the comments section below.

Sentral is transport hub..people come by stage bus, express bus, ktm, ferries and they go to lower level not main gate. Cars with drop off and pick at upper level. Penang kias is behind time. Pedestrians are not to mixed with cars as they may get knocked down and gone with the wind. Look at KL Sentral, KL transport hub. They are build 20!years ago and Penang kias are 20 years behind.

He KbKb pedestrians have to walk up and share the same road as cars. Penang kias no sense. Why pedestrian walk up to upper level and down again to take ferries, ktm or buses? Penang hero to walk beside cars? Like motor lane, it is separated from cars. You go to KL Sentral and south transport hub, foot men is separated from cars

Penang Cafe Sparks Pricing Debate With RM48.70 English Breakfast

If Penang consumers can afford such high pricing menu, soon such high price will become a norm, encouraging even hawkers to raise their prices. So it is best not to support such luxury pricing food.

Penang fancy outlets are for selfie Instagram photos.
The menu are priced higher to account for high cost of investment in interior decoration.
Young generation likes the setting never the hiked up prices to pay, and if not careful may join many in debt with no savings for senior retiring age unless Madani can secure more monetary subsidies.

Shark Tank’s Kevin O’Leary expressly said that store-bought coffee is “such a waste of money.” He then referenced the fact that coffee can be made at home for pennies, at which point you can put it in a travel mug and bring it to work if you happen to report to an office. And in light of that, he thinks paying several dollars for a store-bought cup makes little sense.

Good idea to have LRT link from Island to mainland but what is more urgent is a comprehensive LRT network on the Island with the necessary feeder bus network so that more people will use public transportation than to own cars which is the main cause of massive traffic congestion on the Island itself. Driving on the island is really a nightmare especially during rush hour.

NGO Penang can organise daily fishing trips by boats around the coast of Penang. In that way, they can help to sustain traditional fishing methods for future generation to witness while able to provide financial means to the fishermen who prefer to stick to traditions and difficult to embrace new fishing (fish rearing to be precise) technology.

Then we will not see a lonely boat as depicted by Anil in this posting, but a squadron of touristy fishing boats inclusive of pink dolphins sightings. Win-win?

Good day Mr Anil,

I hope you can encourage more of your colleagues at Aliran and Penang Forum to actively comments at anilnetti.com for mutual benefits between NGOs and normal ordinary folks like us.
We may agree to disagree and vice versa. Through the process of exchanging ideas or healthy debating of current affairs, the public can understand the difficult roles NGOs are facing, and can be motivated to help them reaching the goals.
Otherwise, ordinary folks like us tend to “syiok sendiri” in the minds of NGOs or the authorities???

NGO folks may behave like smart elites who prefer to interact among themselves, then quickly blaming the government for not listening to their so called better ideas.
So “ordinary folks” better understand democracy is not one person one vote, but one dollar one vote (quoted from Dr Lim of Penang Forum on Astro Awani’s Consider This).

Some people like me are reluctant to share ideas with NGOs because NGOs are mostly inflexible in taking views that are not consistent with their belief.

Many NGOs are out of touch.

Look at SIS – communicate in English and not in BM, target urban non malays instwad of rural malays.

This is already an old issue now. State election is tomorrow. But this political leaders are not quite over it yet. They have decided to pull out their old rusty knives and pork at each other, to show their ugliness for all to see.

Such maturity, despite being a political party since March 18, 1966 and they have now become part of the ruling government also. Mmmm.

Many are still suspicious about Muda possibly being funded by … SS could [allegedly] be a ‘spy’, just like AA, planted by Che Det as a mole in PH.

She may remain and continue or she may disappear. That all depends on how determined she is and how she plans out her political career.

Muda is looking to come to Penang to be the Opposition voice. So far, they have not been able to pick the right subjects to further their cause. Also, nobody seems to know who their leading members are.

Only their leader speaks, highlighted, giving the impression that it is another one man show political party.

She looks like Hong Kong star Maggie Q and has potential to go Hollywood to make TV series should she fails to gather political support. Nobody can oppose that?

It is a simple trust issue. Pakatan Harapan has made U-Turns before, usually after winning elections with the usual not cast in stone excuses. So, forgive us for being somewhat sceptical, but we hope this policy remains and thank you for the reply.
