Echoes of defeat: Five things Anwar must do to win back Malaysia’s trust

ANWAR IBRAHIM OFFICIAL/FACEBOOK

The most telling moment for the “unity government” came on Sunday night, when a crowd of a few thousand at a dinner banquet applauded DAP MP Lim Lip Eng’s announcement that Pakatan Harapan had lost the Sungai Bakap by-election.

Imagine that. If that is not writing on the wall for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, I don’t know what is.

Two years have flown and if Anwar does not buck up, he will lose the next general election. Look what just happened to Rishi Sunak and Emmanuel Macron in the UK and France.

Alarm bells at Sungai Bakap

Clearly, many among the ethnic minorities are no longer willing to give PH their undivided support. But because many of them feel they do not have a political alternative they are comfortable with, they stayed out of the Sungai Bakap by-election.

Some of the ethnic majority, the Malays, have no such qualms about voting for the opposition, so they switched their support from Umno or PH to Perikatan Nasional. Full article on Aliran website

PMX should not try to be too conservative to lure Malay votes from PN, and lose its non-Malays votes in the process. This by election has served a warning to PMX not to ignore it’s loyal supporters and take them for granted.

The rising number of Bumiputera students enrolled in international schools is a sign that more Bumiputera parents are losing trust in the quality of national schools, says

Anthony Loke today said that Chinese school fundraisers, including those involving breweries, are mostly held outside school premises and attended by parents and supporters. He said that such events are usually held in restaurants or other external premises, following guidelines from the Education Ministry.

Once done with primary school, the students can attend the 82 Chinese government secondary schools (also known as SMJK), 63 independent Chinese high schools or national secondary schools. After that, they can head to the three Chinese community-based tertiary education institutions, private universities or government universities if they meet the local requirements.

Not being rich, the bulk of parents have little choice beyond Chinese schools. The children face these despite one of the largest ministerial budgets: teacher absenteeism, discrimination/abuse, molest/assault, poor teaching, incorrect/political texts/exam questions, excess books, subjective evaluation (1 exam after 11 years), poor infrastructure (collapsing roofs, snakes, etc.), gangsterism, colonial ties, food poisoning, unpopular/impractical changes, admin. imposed on teachers..

They have formed their companies here, they pay taxes to the government of the day, the employ a lot of Malays in their work force and if UMNO youth were to check with the youth from schools, universities and right up to the workplace on who consumes the most of tobacco related products, the results will be obvious!

I challenge the govt to ban tobacco and brewery industries in this country to stop the complains. Why ban their donations if they are legal contributors in the economy and the taxes they paid are used on each and every segment of the society? What’s the difference between a direct contribution to schools as compared to funding from the govt with the tax money collected from them?

You don’t see any politicians questioning or asking about the sin tax collected annually, how it is accounted and how much and to how many ministries, agencies, or to the states etc, it is allocated, for expenditure.

This sin tax is 100% from the nons, is it not? Do they highlight this sin tax in the annual budget as revenue collected? What is the government’s SOP on this sin tax collected?

Does PAS governed states collect sin tax? Would like to hear from PAS on this.

In business, sometimes they make it, sometime they fail. That is how business is. Nothing much to do with who the people are.

In one area 3 big malls, 2 of which was with hotels attached, all 3 malls with one hotel failed. One more hotel barely surviving. 2 of the building are now terribly run down and looks ghostly at night.

Homeless people sometime occupy their frontage.

It is important to recognize that there are two distinct approaches to worship within religious practices. One group venerates images and engages in rituals that have been observed for thousands of years, and they possess logical justifications for these traditions. ” Penang chief minister extends his deputy’s leave by 4 days ”
dd  05 Aug 2024 1:13PM

https://www.thevibes.com/articles/news/103015/penang-chief-minister-extends-his-deputys-leave-by-4-days

========

Don’t state government officials have medical and annuals leaves ? Medical leave is recommended and given by doctors and annual leaves are usually approved by their bosses when applied.

So, why is this asking for and agreeing to extend leaves ? Why the need to be so public about the CM agreeing and extending staff’s leaves?

He, he he. Come to think about it, it does somewhat resemble a rocket shape, doesn’t it, complete with small stabilizer ‘wings’ on the sides. We have to give it to PAS; they clearly have an eye for rocket designs.

“…. that this requirement was in line with the cabinet’s decision requiring social media and online messaging platforms to comply with Malaysian laws and combat cyber crime … This includes scams and online fraud, cyber bullying, and sexual crimes against children.”

Strengthening cybersecurity infrastructure, promoting public awareness about online safety, and enforcing stricter regulations against cybercriminal activities are essential steps. By taking these actions, we can protect our community and ensure a safer digital environment for everyone.

“This new regulatory framework only applies to services that meet the licensing eligibility criteria and does not involve its users …. licensing all social media platform service providers operating in the country”.

>>>  Why lump all social media platforms? Does it also involve bloggers?

The strong impression we are receiving is that the government is increasingly anxious about the criticism directed at it over its alleged misdeeds, whatever those may be.

Unlike any previous administration, this government appears to be taking unprecedented steps in response to public dissent and scrutiny.

Since the introduction of the Internet by our TMM ( 4th Ex PM), who championed the principles of non-censorship and free expression, there has been a remarkable shift in the government’s approach.

In an era marked by rapid information dissemination and heightened public engagement, it seems the current authorities are struggling to navigate the challenges posed by a digital landscape that empowers citizens to voice their concerns more freely than ever before.

“That’s cowardice, he said.”

Fast forward to November 2022, the PH coalition government, which includes the DAP, took over the state administration.  About 2 years have passed. Now… Read more »
