Swiss attorney general’s office finds ‘serious indications’ of RM17bn embezzlement

A bombshell, if ever there was one.

Read the full statement from the Swiss attorney general’s office here. The actual headline of the Swiss statement starts with “1MDB case”.

The criminal investigation conducted by the Office of the Attorney General of Switzerland (OAG) has revealed serious indications that funds have been misappropriated from Malaysian state companies. The monies believed to have been misappropriated would have been earmarked for investment in economic and social development projects in Malaysia. So far four cases involving allegations of criminal conduct and covering the period from 2009 to 2013 have come to light in this connection (relating to Petrosaudi, SRC, Genting/Tanjong and ADMIC), each involving a systematic course of action carried out by means of complex financial structures.

The sum suspected to have been misappropriated amounts to around US$4bn; its intended purpose is the subject of further investigations. So far it has been ascertained that a small portion of the money was transferred to accounts held in Switzerland by various former Malaysian public officials and both former and current public officials from the United Arabic Emirates. To date, however, the Malaysian companies concerned have made no comment on the losses they are believed to have incurred.

The Wall Street Journal quotes the Swiss attorney general:

“We are very concerned,” Swiss Attorney General Michael Lauber told The Wall Street Journal on Friday. “We have found evidence of suspicious money transfers linked to 1MDB going through Swiss financial institutions, and we believe that it is very important that it is shared with the Malaysian authorities.”

What is the Malaysian attorney general going to say or do now? So, how now, Apandi? Still case closed?

Isn’t it time we let the MACC, assisted by other independent personalities, conduct an impartial investigation to get to the bottom of this Mother of all Scandals?

The 1MDB scandal is merely a symptom, albeit a gargantuan one, of a more important number: 54. That’s Malaysia’s ranking in Transparency International’s 2015 corruption perceptions index, and it’s down four levels from a year earlier. In 2014, Saudi Arabia trailed Malaysia five places. By 2015, Najib’s supposed benefactor leapfrogged ahead of Malaysia, ranking in the 48th percentile. The perception corruption has worsened on Najib’s watch (a Swiss one, perhaps?) can be found in everything from stock and currency gyrations to foreign-direct-investment trends to divergent political dynamics in Asia. Indonesia, for example, jumped 19 places on Transparency International’s tables since… Read more »

Avoid the Kaaba for life after this ‘sin’?

Najib may get his super prosecutor Shafee to tag-team Apandi to neutralise or even checkmate the Swiss AG?

Swiss AG – as ‘sharp’ & timely handy as a Swiss Knife! When you can’t ‘proceed further’ with a Malaysian-made kampung parang in a maze of intrigues + twist & turns of financial scandals in a heavily liana-forested Malaysian Justice, just get a Swiss Knife. Besides being handy & portable (anywhere in the world), its multi-tools of knives, screw driver, scissors & even a saw can help overcome the common obstacles usually expected in a dense & confusing rainforest of Malaysian politics. No need for US Survival Rambo Knife that can bend like tofu at short notice from Golfing Obama.… Read more »

Najib returned a fair bit of the ‘donation’ to Saudi to avoid any conflict of interest in forming brotherhood with Hadi’s PAS? Obama is looking forward to his pension, knowing that probably Donald Trump as the next President of USA could take on Najib like a game of The Apprentice?

Obama will get more ‘khang tao’ from US big corporations for TPPA market penetration into Malaysia.
Maybe get some ‘donation’ from friendly Asean leaders on his post-president lecture circuits.
Who cares for Malaysians suffering? Don’t have to ask this Political Trader Obama who may also trade away his ancestral homeland Kenya wholesale, cheap & good Africa.
