Sleepless in Sarawak; restless in Oxford

The latest Aliran Monthly focuses on the situation in Sarawak.

The political outlook there does not look rosy for Taib Mahmud and the other BN component party leaders who are so dependent on his patronage.

For more information, go to the Aliran website here.

Why did Oxford University invite Taib as its star speaker? Sarawak Report explores the connections, if any, between Sarawak, Taib and Oxford in its latest piece here.

Yang, do you think the natives in Sabah and Sarawak will vote for change?

Remember the recent by-election in Sabah, the natives still voted for BN right?

The PR must do something to “shake up” the natives…

Many have said Malay votes will swing back to BN… and the Indians too…

Indians are very unpredictable, swing here and swing there…

The only comfort is, the Chinese (majority) is for PR now.

However, why are the Chinese in Johor still supporting BN? Looks like they are having eternal slumber. Sad !!!

BN controlled the head of the tribes. The head will get the tribes to vote for BN as they are very pleased to get the basic goodies (those low on the Maslow’s Hierachy of needs) like electricity (generator). Don’t forget those rural fellows has no internet access to read alternative media. Remember they are so happy to get RTM transmissin, unknown to the fact that their mind are being poisoned daily by programs like Diluar Lingkaran. therefore it is important for us to disseminate alternative media to the rural folks. That is something umno is very scared of. information if… Read more »

Kee,
Lets hope for the best after the Sibu election. Hopefully they will wake up after this. Thats why PR in Sarawak must not just consist of DAP, PKR and PAS, they must include the local parties there. Thats the only way Sarawak can be captured. And the PR is working on that. Thats a good sign

Kee, too bad they still believe in that ice cream man, CSL. Beside the Chinese PKR and PAS are still weak over there. They must make a more concerted effort

I agree with Anil, focus on Taib’s issue rather than UK universities standards. That is not critical to Msia. What is important is why on earth is a normal chief minister with a controversial track record in his own home state being asked to speak to a world class university??? Moreover, it is on a topic for which he himself has been accused of not practising. That’s the issue here i believe.

Why “sleepless” and “restless”?
What was Najib doing when no one’s home? Did he let out the termites? 😀

Oxford may want his money not what he is going to say.
Only a fool like Taib thinks he is great they are making a fool of him They are smoking him out of Sarawak to expose him to the world .

I think Oxford’s supine adulation of this man is the inevitable outcome of the commoditisation of intellectual output. You don’t have to be a once-in-a-generation ground-breaking thinker to make a lot of money. Luck and a little consistency in your observance of a few simple rules is enough. In regimes such as that prevailing in Malaysia, there are additional opportunities for enormous enrichment. Collections of rare diamonds and ancient works of art can now be complemented with the acquisition of that most elusive of luxuries: the original idea, made transferable as ‘intellectual property’. Those reticent types who insist on a… Read more »

… Given a choice, I will employ Oxford University MBA holder rather than Uitm double Phds holders. This is my personal preference.

Will Taib Mahmud in his own speech “The Role Of Muslim Nations In Rebuilding Today’s Global Economy” Global Economy” mention that in fact Sarawak is a mainly Christian State and that his Muslim family belongs to a minority faith?

Inviting dubious characters to be guest speakers in this prestigious university only show, what power and money can do…they obviously, can do wonders!

Why you sound surprised, Mr. Anil? I have said it many times and I will say it again, Oxford is now a sub-sub-standard university and its aim is money. Pure, simple, money. Oxford and its host country, the United Kingdom, are on the way down, and keep going down. Anyone been to UK lately will agree with this fact. Europe in general is falling, but UK is falling faster than many other European countries. I will even put UK on par with Greece. Both are bleeding in red ink and both are burdened with populations that are unproductive, lazy and… Read more »

The ‘Bristish Empire’ is falling like London bridge. However, many people still think highly of the British, worshipping anything coming out from this failing state (including those who are still proclaiming EPL and England football team are the best).

We should now look at China – it is the new force in this century. It could be a destination of Malaysian maids in time to come (ha ha!).

Better learn Mandarin if you can.

I hve no respect for Oxford University for churning out useless graduates as evident in those serving as politicians in Malaysia… (you know who)

Yeah, Oxford is such a lousy University, Said Business school which is ranked at the number 16th or 18th in the world is so inferior compared to Universiti Malaya. Oxford MBAs are not wanted in the international arena and MU MBA’s are what employers are looking for. Oxford is responsible for producing the likes of Tony Pua and MU are responsible for producing all those … UMNO/BN MPs. Sad, such intruders had infested Anil’s blog with such low quality comments. Will the credibility and quality of this blog suffers, if continued low quality comments are allowed? I have seen so… Read more »

Anil, Why did you delete my earlier comment. Its nothing offensive. I gonna tell you that Pearl must have been rejected by Oxford, thats why he is so annoyed with UK and tried to compare it with Greece. Next he would have told you that Zimbabwe and Myanmar is ever better off than UK….
