Najib’s empty ‘apology’ an insult; Anwar’s reaction troubling

Aliran’s latest media statement below:

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s outrageous response to criticisms of his “acceptance” of Najib Razak’s empty 1MDB apology is deeply troubling.

Anwar did not just dismiss public concerns; he showed contempt for those alarmed by latest developments. In bizarrely calling himself “father of the nation” – an accolade usually bestowed by others – he also revealed a feudal, patriarchal streak, similar to former Prime Minister Mahiaddin “Abah” Yasin’s.

Anwar’s labelling of critics as “bebal” (dim-witted) exposes the same toxic arrogance that people endured under Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s rule.

This display of raw disdain for public opinion is not just disturbing – it is infuriating. Far from showing the humility expected of a genuine leader, Anwar words suggest that legitimate criticism threatens his ego. Is he revealing his true colours when confronted with widespread public dissent?

Meanwhile, Najib’s contemptible ‘apology’ openly mocks the nation. The convicted kleptocrat has the audacity to minimise his pivotal role in the 1MDB scandal by deflecting blame ahead of a court decision.

All the while, the people continue bearing the massive financial burden of his actions.

Najib’s purported apology is not just hollow – it is an insult to everyone in Malaysia who continues to pay for his crimes.

Where is the respect for the rule of law and administration of justice? If Najib really wanted to apologise, he could have included his apology in his submission to the courts and remained silent after that.

Anwar’s rush to accept Najib’s empty apology, coupled with his hostile reaction to public scepticism, raises serious concerns about where this administration is heading.

The courts must be allowed to complete their work without any political interference or cue.

We, the people, must maintain our right to voice concerns about this disturbing turn of events.

The people of Malaysia deserve leaders who respect public discourse and demonstrate genuine accountability. We do not deserve cynical apologies and arrogant dismissals of legitimate criticism.

“The proposal that was formulated is about prison reforms and not about house arrests involving Najib” Loke said ”

Yes, he said that and mentioned it was his personal sentiment. However, he followed up by stating that the proposed amendments to allow house arrest had nothing to do with Najib.

Is he really that naïve, or does he think that we, the Rakyat, are naïve? Has he forgotten the DNAA episode? Whatever politicians say needs to be taken with a pinch of salt.

Happy Deepavali to all.

Strangely many people still think Nakib is innocent and is victimised.

That shows the success of propaganda, censorship and selective crackdowns. Other governments – such as Switzerland, Singapore and USA – may have recovered more of the loot for this country than it managed to do.

The third charge under Section 23(1) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Act 2009 that Najib is facing in the trial is noteworthy, as it involves a USD3 billion (approximately RM13.13 billion) bond meant for the development of the Exchange TRX being diverted into the former Prime Minister’s bank account.

” House arrest bill is tailored-made to suit Najib despite loud denial ”

========

How many others among our Rakyat share similar thoughts? Only the current ruling political leaders seem to think and say otherwise.

However, they, the PH Madani political people, are the ones introducing this house arrest bill, which, previous governments did not find it necessary, over the past sixty plus years.

Some middle-class Malaysians say they are being ‘punished’ by PM Anwar’s planned subsidy cuts for ultra-rich.

Malaysia wants to trim petrol, education and healthcare subsidies for the top 15% of earners, but the already pinched middle class fears it could be in the crosshairs.

Good article. The PM decided to join (was part of) the Pardons Board that reduced this world-famous criminal’s punishment. Nowhere – even in S. America – does a convicted leader get such special clothing and transportation after conviction.

Sorry, but whatever claims are made, we, the Rakyat, have lost trust in the words and statements issued by those in power. The last time, we heard this phrase ‘innocent until proven guilty,’ it resulted in an alleged corrupt individual seeking legal representation, which led to a decision of ‘Discharge Not Amounting to Acquittal’ (DNAA). The High Court has called on Datuk Seri Najib Razak to enter his defence on four charges of power abuse and 21 charges of money laundering involving RM2.28bil linked to 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).

Justice Collin Lawrence Sequerah said the court had conducted a maximum evaluation in the case and found that the prosecution had proven prima facie in its case against the former prime minister.

The judge has put up with so much pretence, drama, disrespect of court decorum and a very long string of excuses for delay. He and the prosecutors have persevered. We can hope the gullible masses of “special people” will realise many of those leading, advising and ordering them have had the worst intentions.
