Wild boars invade Botanic Garden

Since about a year back, the Botanic Garden has been regularly invaded by wild boars, according to a source.

These wild boars have destroyed most of the aroids (common name for members of the Araceae family of plants) in the Aroid Walk and the lawns.

Wild boars have been active in the Garden, especially in the lily pond area, since the 1970s, but perhaps they are more active now because there is much less jungle left for them in surrounding areas.

Wild boars are a part of nature just as people are.

Their nerves, blood vessels and valves maybe useful. They may aid people who need heart surgery.

Some biologist should look at the problem in the area to ensure something is not out of synch.

They couldn’t have come out to return the “Wang Ihsan”, could they?” !

The presence of wild boars will discourage ‘khalwat’ in the botanical garden…. so it is good!!!

Time for Botanical Garden to reinvent itself. Some nature parks would have night safari or nature watch for the nature enthusiasts to observe night life in the wild. But here in BG, I find its life much like a Gomen run dept with clockwork precision and nothing much exciting happening except for the run of the mills annual affairs. What we have here is a million yr old rainforest with war time history, colonial heritage and nature at its pristine. Why can’t something be created for creative enjoyment, nature adventure and appreciation of Penang’s nature heritage? Have we seen any… Read more »

I remember long time ago (our young Penangites may not know) that we have Orang Utans and kangaroos at the Botanical Garden, courtesy of the governments of Indonesia and Australia respectively. Perhaps Anil can tell us the history of this and the final fate of these creatures.

The wild boars could be sacred. You can touch it and get lucky in 4D, just like the wild boars in Taiping. It will lure even more tourists to Penang. Yen Yen please take note (she may not be bothered as she is likely to be traveling to overseas (on) rakyat’s money).

This is a good thing. The Botanical Garden is returning to nature. Why should there be complains? I would say keep people out of it.

If you go to Bako nature reserve in Sarawak, you will notice wild boars roaming around the hostel area.

This is nature, and could be only unique to Penang Botanical Garden.

We should be proud of it.
Yen yen could promote it to tourist.
