The Gurney Drive beach in the city that we lost

Look at this photo of Gurney Drive, probably in the 1970s. It is hard to imagine we had a lovely beach in the city of George Town, Penang, once. People happily swimming in clear waters. A day out for families. Some buying fresh wild-caught fish directly from inshore fisherfolk. You can’t get fish fresher than that!

And the photo below is from the 1930s:

Now, after degrading this beach, we want to spend billions of ringgit trying to create an artificial “Gurney Wharf”, which is supposed to give city folk an artificial beach (which we once had for free), and a massive eight-lane coastal highway. (In reality, the real purpose of this reclamation is the high-density property development planned on reclaimed land from near the Gurney Drive roundabout to Gurney Plaza.) Penang is a clean state.
Penang is a smart city.
Penang is best for retirees.
………..
My perspectives changed the moment i witnessed the underpriviledged folks seeking food to fill stomachs daily at Komtar bus hub.

All can be lost if state government has no shame not to resolve the plights of the needy tjat happen right below their Komtar State Administration Offices.

Don’t wait until the rakyat shriek out “Shame On You, YBs”

Gurney Drive is the address of those with deep pockets, not for locals earning Ringgit?

Exclusive residence along the coasts of Penang island is a new form of gentrification.

Future sightings of frolicking dolphins only for those with prestigious homes, may be those MM2H residents?

Gurney Drive – a City of Dreams for average Penangites?

At the expense of the beach lost in gentrification?

Why not Ray join or become a developer as they gain the most?. Tunglang’s relative works for a developer and he is proud of his relative but shriek at the gomen for allowing developers to do the job.

Why Silence when Pengland was not allowed to borrow $$ by Commonweath Gomen?

Remembering the golden days of Gurney Drive
https://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/category/highlight/2021/01/02/remembering-the-golden-days-of-gurney-drive/

Despite how beautiful the new Gurney Wharf may turn out to be in 2023, memories of Gurney Drive and what it used to be will be etched in the hearts of many.

Unfortunately, memories alone – however treasured they may be – cannot withstand the onslaught of development, and we must now bid the fondest of goodbyes to the old Gurney Drive.

Fashionable masks may look good – but how can you tell if they protect against COVID-19?
https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/covid-19-what-reusable-mask-can-i-wear-new-mask-guidelines-moh-14881400

Masks that meet the requirement for medical and surgical standards have a bacterial filtration efficiency of 95% – blocking 95% of droplets it is exposed to.

A mask with higher bacterial filtration efficiency is more effective in preventing bacteria-containing droplets from reaching the wearer. This figure is often indicated on the packaging or product description of the masks sold.

CDC has classified Level 4: Very High Level of COVID-19 in Malaysia! 60 deaths a day as PM8 cannot afford a full COVID-19 lockdown with all sectors shut like what was imposed last year in order to avoid risk of economy collapse

Self lockdown is our personal choice now.

People on this forum will bitch and bitch but penang lang so blinded they will continue voting DAP even with the continued destruction of the environment. Missing Tunnel issues and the recent false accusations regarding sinovac vaccines show incompetence and non transparency.
Dap knows penang still their Fixed deposit and don’t care until Penang lang wake up and vote them out. Will that happen? Doubt it.

Overrated? Those making the food are in the 50s to 70s. Whereas the young ones go south for 3 times their salary and get better facilities and treatment. Soon they will be helping them to export “Singland” food to all over the world. The coming choice is mamak food

The state gov. modus operandi is via the sale of land (primary source of income). Statistics or any other social-economic measurement is useless cause they do not use it, they just follow the money. When the money runs out, reclaim more. They will cite non-sense such as reclamation is for combating rising sea levels.
