Look at this photo of Gurney Drive, probably in the 1970s. It is hard to imagine we had a lovely beach in the city of George Town, Penang, once. People happily swimming in clear waters. A day out for families. Some buying fresh wild-caught fish directly from inshore fisherfolk. You can’t get fish fresher than that!
And the photo below is from the 1930s:
Now, after degrading this beach, we want to spend billions of ringgit trying to create an artificial “Gurney Wharf”, which is supposed to give city folk an artificial beach (which we once had for free), and a massive eight-lane coastal highway. (In reality, the real purpose of this reclamation is the high-density property development planned on reclaimed land from near the Gurney Drive roundabout to Gurney Plaza.) Penang is a clean state.
Penang is a smart city.
Penang is best for retirees.
My perspectives changed the moment i witnessed the underpriviledged folks seeking food to fill stomachs daily at Komtar bus hub.
All can be lost if state government has no shame not to resolve the plights of the needy tjat happen right below their Komtar State Administration Offices.
Don’t wait until the rakyat shriek out “Shame On You, YBs”
Ray of Light, I do not see any light emitting out from you. The shame is on Pengland Kias. US of A has Bill Gates wilh donations, When will Bill Gates of Pengland come out? Why not shriek at Pengland Forum to do more than shouting?
Ray of Light, you forgot to ask milk tea?? He has jalan and good connect to Ebit, At last Pengland has hope. Milk Tea said things can do better . Pengland may not have Gates but have milk and tea is good enough to do better to send Lew. I am shrieking to order satu gelas teh susu.
Gurney Drive is the address of those with deep pockets, not for locals earning Ringgit?
Exclusive residence along the coasts of Penang island is a new form of gentrification.
Future sightings of frolicking dolphins only for those with prestigious homes, may be those MM2H residents?
Zenith Consortium [rumoured to be] laying off staffs now ghan PTMP hits the snag.
May be State goverment do not need to privatise but undertake the project by pulling in talented Malaysians in Penang and abroad ?
Reported in today’s Chinese Daily Kwang Hwa Jit Poh. How could Zenith Consortium proceed with reclaimation engineering work now that they have cut down the staff number.
Talented? Pengland Gomen has to pay big bucks. How many talent Pengland Kias will do state service like Sinkapore Nat Service? Sinkapore, Nederland, Hong Land are all rich rich. They need not to be privatised,
Gurney Drive – a City of Dreams for average Penangites?
At the expense of the beach lost in gentrification?
dreams means hope and inspire to be better, What did Martin Luther King said? I had a dream.
Watch this clip to help you dream about Future Penang urban living:
Privatation of land reclaimation the developers to gain most while state government not so according to Penang Forum Mr MF Lim.
We shall hear from the advocates for land reclaimation to have fair and balanced viewpoints.
Sinkapore, Hong land and Nether Land not wrong to reclaim land since it is not privatise?
Why not Ray join or become a developer as they gain the most?. Tunglang’s relative works for a developer and he is proud of his relative but shriek at the gomen for allowing developers to do the job.
Why Silence when Pengland was not allowed to borrow $$ by Commonweath Gomen?
Remembering the golden days of Gurney Drive
Despite how beautiful the new Gurney Wharf may turn out to be in 2023, memories of Gurney Drive and what it used to be will be etched in the hearts of many.
Unfortunately, memories alone – however treasured they may be – cannot withstand the onslaught of development, and we must now bid the fondest of goodbyes to the old Gurney Drive.
In the past, all kids with go and swim and jump into the water naked, They enjoyed so much and who cares?
You are now reminiscing like your dear friend tunglang?
Where are thou tunglang?
Aerial view of Penang development (June 2021).
Can you spot your home?
Total Lockdown from June 1 for 2 weeks.
Hopefully Anil can now stay at home to write more, his experience and opinion on past Covid-19 movement controls, vaccination fiasco, as well as his assessment on the performance of PN government in combating the pandemic.
hi Alive, I think the figures speak for themselves!
Yes, staying at home. But feel sorry for those whose livelihoods depend on working away from home.
Please support this online petition for “Total Lockdown in Malaysia” to curb the escalating Covid-19 cases:
Fashionable masks may look good – but how can you tell if they protect against COVID-19?
Masks that meet the requirement for medical and surgical standards have a bacterial filtration efficiency of 95% – blocking 95% of droplets it is exposed to.
A mask with higher bacterial filtration efficiency is more effective in preventing bacteria-containing droplets from reaching the wearer. This figure is often indicated on the packaging or product description of the masks sold.
CDC has classified Level 4: Very High Level of COVID-19 in Malaysia! 60 deaths a day as PM8 cannot afford a full COVID-19 lockdown with all sectors shut like what was imposed last year in order to avoid risk of economy collapse
Self lockdown is our personal choice now.
Self lockdown period we hope more news from AnilNetto.com and more concrete comments from readers.
AnilNetto.com should seize this period to attract more readers who are stuck at home. Better be informed by Anil then to being fooled by handphone games.
No more famous laksa at Air Itam Market in Penang. MCO or Ah Long problem?
Bangkok Lan Mee Goreng will move the stall to New World Park for those who love this what some people call it overrated mee goreng.
People on this forum will bitch and bitch but penang lang so blinded they will continue voting DAP even with the continued destruction of the environment. Missing Tunnel issues and the recent false accusations regarding sinovac vaccines show incompetence and non transparency.
Dap knows penang still their Fixed deposit and don’t care until Penang lang wake up and vote them out. Will that happen? Doubt it.
Pengland is only island and place in the whole earth that see destruction of environment. No see and everthing is good in Singland, Hongland, Chinland with super mega cities population of 30 million more than whole of Malaysia, building coal power plants every month and damming rivers for hydropower, Amazon with botak fields to feed hungry Chinland and burgers, can only see Tigers that are cats in Malaysia, North Pole more ais forming and more sea water rise are eroding the beaches away. Down Under bush fire destroy trees and wild life and next year the flood does the same.… Read more »
Overrated? Those making the food are in the 50s to 70s. Whereas the young ones go south for 3 times their salary and get better facilities and treatment. Soon they will be helping them to export “Singland” food to all over the world. The coming choice is mamak food
The state gov. modus operandi is via the sale of land (primary source of income). Statistics or any other social-economic measurement is useless cause they do not use it, they just follow the money. When the money runs out, reclaim more. They will cite non-sense such as reclamation is for combating rising sea levels.
Who are they cite? How little tax pengland kias pay and how much received in return?
No Pengland kias like Gates, Jack Ma or Lee of Samsung or LGs. Want gomen to be like Samsung build factories and employ millions of pengland kias as assembly workers.
No money talk what just like after the coming out in full voice after the fasting period
