Fisherfolk of Sungai Batu boost food security

68

Independent filmmaker Andrew has come up with another video, this time showcasing the fishing community of Sungai Batu and their role in promoting food security.

Their catch in this ‘golden area’ (kawasan mas) keeps the prices of fish and prawns within reach of many locals.

What will happen if the massive 4,500-acre reclamation project takes off off this coast? I dread to think.

Penang commercial fish farming can be enhanced with technology to ensure everyone can have affordable daily protein supply on plates.

Commercial fish farming can only satisfy the need for fish consumption. Our coastline fishermen cannot bring in good catch due to dwindling fish stock and the small cale fishing more suited for leisure fishing. But our fishermen are pretty content with monthly subsidies for simple day to day living, no aspiration to grow bigger.

China has launched the world’s first giant floating fish farm that can produce 3,700 tonnes of fish every year – an output similar to Chagan, one of the country’s largest freshwater lakes.

Cannot see the trend or pattern?

A day will come when your yellow oil (RON95) may not be subsidized just like palm oil. Government is working out new policy/strategy to provide subsidized yellow oil only to B40. The rest including Singaporeans can only pump green oil.

The good news is the present government can only talk, but clueless on how to implement any strategy, if any to begin with.

They have tried quite a few ideas before but non worked well enough to continue. The system of fuel usage by the Rakyat is quite complex. All this talk now is because the price of oil per barrel has gone up. It could be temporary. For now, the Govt will just have to wait it out. The business community may just be waiting and salivating for the price of fuel to increase. The current system works well and it should remain.
