And so it came to pass… and tragically, another live is lost. Check out the statement by SAM below. And to think that the draft 2040 Penang Structure Plan wants to relax the restriction on building on hill slopes higher than 76 metres (250 feet) above sea level. How scary is that.

We never learn, do we? Is that because Greed or other considerations cloud the better judgement of those who should know better.

Doctor’s death in Penang landslide demands answers

Sahabat Alam Malaysia is very shocked to learn about the death of a doctor following a landslide that happened in Paya Terubong today.

As we know, the Paya Terubong area is very prone to landslides. It is also where massive hill-cutting is happening for a road project.

Residents and NGOs have warned that major works in this environmentally sensitive area are very risky to the safety of residences nearby and the public.

We have been proven right once again, unfortunately.

The Penang state government must explain how this tragedy happened and why such a landslide was not prevented.

Photos of the area show unprotected and bare slopes.

The authorities, it seems, just never learn from previous incidents. Was there any monitoring of the slopes? Why were there insufficient mitigation measures?

The state must explain and take urgent measures against the company responsible for the works.

Immediate rehabilitation measures are needed, along with other measures to prevent further fatalities and damage from happening to residents nearby.

Take action now before more damage is done, and punish anyone found responsible for negligence. – SAM
