On the heels of the 400000-strong People’s Climate March in New York, several thousand protesters have descended on Wall Street to “confront the root cause of the climate crisis – an economic system based on exploiting frontline communities, workers and natural resources”.
The slogan of the Flood Wall Street movement is ‘Stop Capitalism. End the Climate Crisis’.
Protesters wore blue to symbolise rising sea levels.
They believe that capitalism has led to unsustainable economic growth, rapid depletion of natural resources and the unlocking of carbon in the ground and their transmission into the atmosphere.
So they have now trained their sights on the “system that both causes and profits from the crisis that is threatening humanity” – the global bankers and financial institutions who have profited immensely from their loans and speculation in such unsustainable activity, especially dirty energy sources including fracking, tar sands extraction, and offshore drilling.
Among those due to address the rally is writer Naomi Klein, author of a new book This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs The Climate.

According to the United Nations, meat production is responsible for 14.5 percent of human-induced global greenhouse gas emissions.
