What New York’s Mamdani can teach Malaysia’s Madani

Zohran Mamdani - DMITRY SHEIN/WIKIPEDIA

Imagine this: you are watching a political debate and one of the candidates has to spell out his own name because his rival cannot get it right.

“The name is Mamdani, M-A-M-D-A-N-I.” (This of course has been turned into a meme, complete with dance moves, that has swept across US social media.)

Mamdani. It almost sounds like Madani, that grand vision that Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has touted with its six noble values of sustainability, compassion, respect, innovation, prosperity and trust.

Yet, something is different. While Malaysia’s political leaders give us airy-fairy slogans and pie-in-the-sky visions, Zohran Mamdani has given New Yorkers something else – specific promises on issues that matter most to them. He had no memorable slogans for them like 1New York or Keluarga New York (New York Family).

GEORGE TOWN: Over 240 trees have been felled to make way for two mega projects, sparking a storm of concern over the island’s shrinking green canopy.

Conservationists warned that the cost of progress may be too high, with mature trees – vital to cooling cities and sustaining biodiversity – sacrificed for development projects.

If only current and past Malaysian government would focus on developing local economy, education, medical care, train high skilled workers, instill fair trade policies , increase equal opportunities for the local populace, curb wasteful spending, reduce cabinet size, curb corruption, curb nepotism and cronyism, curb wasteful government offices and placements, Pretty sure Malaysia will be a viable trade partner and will have the skills to negotiate better with it’s partners. As of now, Malaysian politicians, government officials and political influential person’s have stolen billions in tax payer funds for self interest, spent taxpayer monies on failed military equipments, projects ,… Read more »

He stole $4.5 billion from a sovereign fund meant to build schools, hospitals, and national prosperity — and lived like a king while the people of Malaysia paid the price. But Jho Low didn’t act alone. He was helped by a network of bankers, celebrities, politicians, and global enablers — from Goldman Sachs to Leonardo DiCaprio to the highest levels of power in Malaysia and the Middle East. So how did this massive heist look legal on paper? Who exactly helped him pull it off — and why is Jho Low still free? In this Wealth Decoded investigation, we reveal… Read more »

It seems that the ‘Walk for Judicial Independence’ on 14 July 2025 risks turning into a political rally, rather than a professional legal gathering. Heavily politicised. What is your view, Mr Anil?

The Bar Council should not follow Rafizi, who is using the judiciary issue as a mask. Ordinary people seem to follow blindly, while those at the top pretend to be wise. Both the so-called ‘Walk for Judicial Independence’ and the RCI campaign led by Rafizi serve the same purpose — to bring down Anwar. But if Anwar falls, then who will form the next government? Do you want Perikatan Nasional, dominated by PAS and Bersatu? Think carefully.

What the NEP has done and doing is not the promise NEP of 1970. Remember “ irrespective of race”. Main thing to remember is we shouldn’t do what we won’t do to or teach our own children. Eg don’t work hard and get rewarded, don’t have to pay back debts. Instead set KPI and standards and improve the people. Now we have cases of siphoning millions. Thanks to privatization.

“Irrespective of culture, region, race or religion” is part of the relentless double-talk. At some point, most of the serfs give up trying to keep track, make sense or dissent.

All aspiring politicians will say so to appeal to the moderates. But they will behave differently once elected.
