Malacca election: Amid reformists’ gloom, some positives emerge

187
880

Here are some quick thoughts now that Barisan Nasional has cruised to a commanding victory in today’s Malacca state election.

Many who had hoped that the polls would reignite the momentum for reforms are feeling despondent. But there are some positives.

The first positive is that Umno-BN does not need Pas’ support to win. This means Pas’ bargaining power will be much reduced in the coming general election. Why would Umno want to allocate seats to Pas to contest in some Malay-majority seats when Umno would fancy its own chances in those seats? Full article on the Aliran website

Even after numerous losses from all previous by elections, the oppositions were still in the Dark. Take for example this Nov. 9th 2021 news statement from one of the opposition person, and you will know what I mean. Quote, DAP secretary general Anthony Loke speaks during a press conference at Melaka DAP’s headquarters November 9, 2021.  — “Loke also noted there is some discomfort among local DAP members in Melaka, but party leaders have explained that ” A LARGER OBJECTIVE REMAINS AT PLAY. Uneasiness on the ground when roti becomes more expensive like sotong and siakap.

A larger objevtive is, when basic neccessities like utility tenaga bills no more subsidy come 2022, more will be awakened to stark reality that the rakyat will be suffering with inflation……losses too numerous even Uncle Wyatt will be shriekingly lost at counting.

In truth, everything is being controlled in Malaysia through AP (approved permit), import and export permits, licenses, monopoly and whatnot. The system was designed in such a way to enrich UMNO Malay elites? Therefore, they can control the prices of food and raw material from spiralling if they wanted to? The only reason they can’t control it is because they do not want to?

Apart from profiteers, reckless and useless spending from the public purse degrades the economy, raises taxes and thus reduces private spending. As the country fritters away its foreign reserves, the cost of getting more foreign currency (rates) go up, raising the cost of imported goods. The demand for foreign things is partly due to (a) brainwashing (propaganda) (b) rigged competition (c) imperialism.

Sustainable solutions to the problem of high food prices lie in holistic policies and not knee-jerk reactions that the government has been taking.

These include intensive farming methods as well as adoption of technological advancements to generate higher yield and self-sufficiency levels, in order to reduce Malaysia’s dependence on food imports.

These are people who fly overseas even in a pandemic for holidays, food supplies, etc. They need millions of RM for houses abroad, “off-shore” bank wealth, political slush funds, etc. They prefer to [allegedly] authorise genetically mutilated maize, deadly herbicides or crony (AP) importers, or to divert public wealth to a mega-project [allegedly] costing 10-100 times its alternatives

The cost of consumer goods may rise again, following a cost hike in logistics and the supply chain, industry players warned.

This trend is expected to continue into next year, which may see food prices rise by 10% to 30% – including the price of cooking oil, which has increased up to 70% this month, while the prices of daily necessities and household products have increased by 5% to 10%.

Cooking oil from palm oil is a simple example of outrages in policy, regulatory enforcement, business and crime. Government was reported as paying 23 manufacturers subsidy of RM1.05b/year for 85,000 tonne/month, but domestic consumption was only 45,000 tonne (in 2016). Yet, shortages occur occassionally.

The clueless opposition fellows have no idea how much out of touch they are with the people. They reuse hopeless suggestions over and over again. If before an Asian Tiger could be brought down and replaced by a kleptocracy, this time it could be worse. Remember the kleptocrat has shown no remorse over his stealing, corruption and abuse of power even when he was found guilty. Without remorse or regret he is not going to change his ways. Around 20 million people in China have joined the “new farmer” movement. The mostly young Chinese professionals, having grown tired of the hustle and bustle of daily life, are reportedly looking for deeper meaning to their existence. Shrinking social mobility and a widening wealth gap in society are also pushing more young people to trade the rat race for the simpler joys they find on the farm.

In 2017 and 2018, domestic consumption contributed 76% of GDP growth; in comparison, the net contribution of international trade dropped from 8% in 2008 to 1.3% in 2018. Exports fell from 17% of total output in 2007 to 9% in 2017. Yet, the rest of the world became more dependent on China; it supplied 35% of global manufactured output -Mckinsey Global Institute
