It’s 81 per cent turnout, not 65 per cent
A group of kampong boys in Penanti near the tallying centre caught up in election fever after the results were announced
As some of you have pointed out, there is a discrepancy between the Election Commission’s figure for the voter turnout of 65 per cent turnout and the actual turnout, which was 81 per cent. This discrepancy created a lot of confusion.
Anwar secured 31,195 votes; Ariff 15,524 votes and Akim’s Hanafi Mamat 92 votes (deposit lost). That is over 46,800 votes cast compared to the total voters of around 58,000.
My math whizz friend comments, “It looks like the Election Commission can only count correctly when the BN wins.”
He further analysed the results and came up with the following conclusions:
- Anwar won two thirds of the votes cast.
- The support for PKR comes from all ethnic groups.
- Support for Anwar/PKR among the Malays comes in at around 60-65 per cent. Incidentally this tallies with what Din, the elderly gentleman in Kampong Petani, told me: “Out of a hundred residents here, you could say 60 to 70 support PKR.”
One final point, 33 per cent of you were correct in your prediction (in the poll on this blog) that Anwar would secure a 15,001-20,000 majority. So were those who predicted a high turnout.
Our citizen journalists were also spot on in predicting a landslide victory for PKR/Anwar. Speaking of which, I will let Karma have the final say:
A jubilant mood all over Permatang Pauh.
The poor are proud that Anwar has made it. Pak Din, a farmer said, “Biarlah Anwar tak beri saya apa-apa. Saya kesihan kat depa. Teruk sangat orang kutuk kat depa. Saya sekeluarga undi depa.”
I talked to an Indian man in his late 30s, introducing himself as Rama. He declared in Malay, “Dia orang mau kasi malu sama itu Anwar Brahim. TV kasi malu. Video kasi malu. Cakap orang besar pun mau kasi malu sama dia. Apa ini politik ka? Itu pasal saya kasi undi sama Anwar. Dia orang baik. Mau tolong sama kita.”
I met a Chinese who introduced himself as Uncle Leong. His immediate reaction to Anwar’s victory was, “Kita semua sudah kata, ini Anwar mesti menang punya. Olang BN manyak kacau. Tadak malu lo. Apa ini cakap-cakap bikin ini macam. Anwar bukan olang macam itu lo. Dia manyak baik. Ini BN tak boleh kasi menang. Kita mesti mau itu Anwar jadi perdana menteri. Dia manyak pandai punya orang. Ini budak apa itu cakap itu macam. Dia tada maluka. Dia punya ayah pun tada maluka? Kasi malu itu orang Melayu.”
Yes, with all the machinery BN had – the TV, the newsprint, the money, the swearing, prominent spokesmen including top government officials to counter Anwar – they still lost. The people want a change. BN’s 51 years at the helm, they feel is enough. People are now united as Malaysians. They are no more talking about racial matters. It’s the oneness they want now…
P.S. from a car load of nice guys I happened to bump into in Permatang Pauh today:
Remember us!…the car that shout ‘blogger unite’ at you (1.00 to 2.00pm…in Permatang Pauh town)… about the winning statistic 70 per cent for PKR and 30 per cent to BN
..and you asked back, ”Are you sure?”
Then my brother replied, “Now it’s 80 per cent to 20 per cent” (after checking his crystal ball).
We are from Kepala Batas. And the rest of us like to thank you and all the bloggers for coming to P44 and making our dreams come true. Zillion thanks!
Final result:
KEPUTUSAN PILIHANRAYA KECIL PARLIMEN PERMATANG PAUH (P44):
Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (KeADILan): 31,195 undi
Hanafi Mamat (AKIM): 92 undi
Datuk Arif Shah Omar Shah (BN): 15,524 undiJumlah mengundi: 47,258
Peratus keluar mengundi: 81 peratus
Undi rosak: 447 undi

Anil
A BIG THANK YOU to you and all citizen reporters who kept us all updated on this blog!! I (all the way in London) was so much more updated than friends and family back home in Malaysia. Am so excited to return to a brand new Malaysia at the end of the year!!

Hope you manage to get some sleep tonite…tomorrow is a bright new day for a bright new Malaysia!!!
Hi Anil, Job welldone!
This only the beginning and not the end of the New Malaysia!
That Australian is misled, Mahathir didn’t make the country great, he actually messed up the country. Badawi is just unlucky, or else, his job can be much easier.
See what Mahathir is going to say. I thought he said he is migrating if Anwar win?
One word: MERDEKA!
Anil and all bloggers
Thanks for the up-to-date reporting from ground zero. I was at my friend’s wedding tonight so I didn’t get to celebrate “first hand” on the Victory of DSAI, our 6th Prime Minister. I am having a belated celebration now. Although I’m alone in front of my PC, I somehow know I’m not alone in this celebration.
Cheers!
Dear Anil,
Its just not only in politics but in everyday life. Arrogance! Sheer arrogance!
Well they now know where they can shove this arrogance. If they don’t know, the rakyat have shown them where!
Well, well, well. The best Merdeka gift this country of ours will ever get. The man who will truly set us free is now on his way to Parliament.
If the crossover materializes, and by the grace of God, the DNA bill will not be passed. The fact that they already have Anwar’s DNA has to be repeated ad infinitum, should the bill be passed.
Let’s all do our part to ensure a victory for Malaysian justice.
wahai malaysian lets give anwar a chance.
Just heard on YV3 th EC gnome announcing 81% voter turnout.
But for now, now just let me sit back & enjoy my glass of mateus rose. AAh, that taste of victory. Divine!!

Dear Anil
Thanks for the ground zero coverage
U did an excellent job
Keep up the good work
And as for BN
Even the pharaohs were doomed for their deeds
u are no different from them
making a mockery of Allah
swearing unecessarily
when u think u are greater then god
u will have a fate as the pharaohs
only instead of dying from the unfication of a parting sea
u will … drown… in the waves of HOPE from the rakyat
waiting with the pharaohs for the one ultimate day
JUDGEMENT DAY

Now we have a reason to celebrate true MERDEKA.
MERDEKA!
For all Malaysian citizens

For the oppressed, downtrodden, underprivileged masses

Ahh, victory is sweet.

Great result for DSAI, and also for everyone who wants good changes to happen in Malaysia.
And thank you for your brilliant coverage of the by-election from Permatang Pauh yesterday!
“Imagine Power To The People” John Lennon.
Anil & citizen journalists
Thank you so much for a job well done! I was logged on to your site, plus Haris’s, Din’s, Zorro’s in additions to Malaysiakini, Anwar’s, Sloone’s blog and a few others - from morning to mid-nite yesterday.
Just love your live coverage past few days and encouraging comments from readers. Honestly, was quite apprehensive for last-minute surprises from BN. I think the results would have been “splashed” on main TV channels much2 earlier if BN were to win and they would have gone “live” at PP just to show their “victory”! Ini, macam tak nak cakap saje. Even this morning, they seem to down-play PR’s victory, as if “its nothing”.
Hope YB Gopalakrishnan and sons are all okay and will be out soon.
Hm, still cant get thru to malaysiatoday. What’s happening there?
Okay, have a good rest! Cheers!
i was following ur updates from my office in KL, didnt have the spirit to focus on work that much! thanks for ur hard work
this is Anwar’s and the people’s victory!!
wonderful victory for changing Malaysia.
can you put a link to Malaysia Today other website. Cant access probably work of the BN. Or maybe you re-post their recent articles
thank you
syabas to DSAI and thank you the people of PP, you made history yesterday and define a new chapter in Malaysia
Bro, a job well done. You guys(bloggers on ground zero) are the unsung hero of this great victory. I never left KL but Permatang Pauh and all its action was just a click away. Never before we had such a live coverage… and you guys had set a new trend. Bravo..mates
great work, anil! thank you for keeping us updated.
thank you for reporting with such dilligency and committment..
i went to sleep smiling last night
i am actually interested in one thing
did arif won in seberang jaya? [his costituency]
even the boys from Kepala Batas support Anwar..
now that he’s in Parliament, it’ll be nice to see if his actions reflect his promises to the Rakyat. time is of the essence!!
they always tell us, Malaysia Boleh!!
26th of August 2008, the good people of P44 Permatang Pauh showed us how capable they are after all!
nothing is impossible BN, prepare your exit plans from the country now you corrupt bunch …
Hi Anil, We really appreciate the work you have done at Permatang Pauh. It’s people like you (including the other bloggers) we Malaysians would get a better comprehensive view of the stories that were flying all around us.
Hope you keep up your work and please do not forget HERALD - keep entertaining us least we forget the social dimension of what our faith requires each individual to perform. I sincerely think our prayers (which was published in the Herald) played a part too in this by-ecection. God Bless.
congrats dsai………..wish him good luck and my only hope is he will make sure his way to become pm will be succeeded….no boundaries for a real hero, all races supported him and iam sure he will never make us regret………..now the next question is? kj dah resign ke seperti yang dia cabar tu?
Well Done…all you real citizens of Malaysia who work so hard for the last ten days to achieve this great victory. Thank you for the updates which I was excitingly following from Sydney. We, Malaysians from abroad hope that with this victory, Malaysia can be saved from being call a corrupted country like Zimbabwe, no laws and no direction. Congratulations DSAI!!
a superb well balanced informative timely posting of the thriller.
neutral and excellent journalistic effort !
thats passion with 2 Ps (PP)
much better than Zorro’s hap hazzard post
Thank you for the updates, and the reports from ground zero. It kept me sane.
For all the news (almost zilch!) the radio or tv provided, one could be forgiven for thinking that nothing big was happening in Malaysia at all! Like that lah our msm, so free and fair!
I am going to put a link to this post on my blog - and curi-ing it as well (cut and paste!) because I especially like the interviews with the ‘real people’ you feature. BN misjudged the common man - and paid the price for it.
It is time for some well deserved rest now, but the work is just beginning, no?
Whatever; the Rakyat won with the help of the voters of Permatang Pauh who voted for Anwar.
Thank you Anil, for “job” well done.
Bro,thanks for the update.
Please remind Anwar to pay a visit to YB Gobalakrishnan and his sons.
They have sacrificed alot for us.
At 4pm the EC announced 64% voter turnout. So how did the turnout reach 80% in the last hour with all the traffic jams, road blocks and difficulty of voters to get to the polling centre?
In the 2008 G.E., the voter turnout was 81%. With the by-election held on a working day coupled with rainy weather and many voters outstation, the high voter turnout in this by-election is extraordinary and rivals ideal conditions in the G.E.
Either it shows the extraordinary determination of the PP voters to vote for change or there is some suspicious activity here to reduce Anwar’s majority.
What do you think, Anil?
Very Many Many Thanks, Man!
Terrific job! Gave you big kick, didn’t it?
Take some deserved rest!
We need to look at the 09 Budget for Friday!
Maybe the EC counted correctly. Ghosts can’t be counted as far as I know…
Hi Anil and Gang,
Thanks for the continues update of this mammoth by-election, to my opinion will be a turning point in Malaysian history and the lives of the people. As I live in Singapore (Malaysian of course), all official media have been quiet and I was not getting any news. You blog was the main source for us in the office consistently in getting an update.
Again thank you and the people of PP. A change is needed, a change is a must.
Now we have hope. Anwar!
You’ll never walk alone
Regards
Mogan Thamo
hi there anyone knows how to get into malaysia today and malaysia insider news website …. looks like they block it again.
Can anyone help me lah …..
Please read my blog http://www.penangfengshui.blogspot.com on what I wrote about the luck of BN and PR from the view of feng shui.
Dear Anil,
Like the nice guys in the car said - a zillion thanks to you for your “live” coverage from ground zero. When the political drama in Malaysia has been played out, when Anwar finally becomes PM, when the rogues running this country are on the run, when a semblance of democracy and our defiled democratic institutions are restored and when the dust finally settles, you will be one of many people Malaysians will need to heartily thank for your tireless efforts and priceless contributions in shaping the politics of this nation for a better future for us all. Malaysian history will remember affectionately the Raja Petra’s, the Anil Nettos, the Haris Ibrahims and many more of this era without whom our children would have been doomed to a life under evil UMNO and BN for posterity. Please keep ‘em coming mate!
Great job. I followed your updates all the way from Austin, Texas!
Anil:
Great job and thanks to you and your team. It was an awesome coverage. I like the pictures. God bless!
The decision of the citizens of PP is an unequivocal statement that the Malaysian people has had enough of the UMNO/BN government. It just reinforce the last GE that it is time for a CHANGE of the type of government that has ruled this nation for the past half century. It is an indication that the people are not satisfied with the “little” that the ruling government has brought to this nation, when it should have been much much more than what the nation is at this point of independent nationhood.
After 5 months of the March GE, every indication from the UMNO/BN government is that they have learned nothing from the citizen’s expressed wishes. There is absolutely no reason to believe that they will learn anything from this PP by election as well.
For the good and future well being of this nation, the Opposition coalition must now take immediate and bold steps to rid this nation of the present government, so that no further damage will be further instituted to the running and well being of Malaysia.
Sybas to PKR and may the Good Lord bless this nation.
increased majority of 2283 votes. that is substantial. however, to najib this is what he said : “”There was not much difference in the number of votes garnered by Anwar when compared with that won by his wife (Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail) in March.” as reported here :
http://www.nst.com.my/Current_News/NST/Wednesday/Frontpage/2333409/Article/index_html
well, to najib (who earns a lot), 2283 is definitely nothing.
Greeting from Jakarta, Anil.
You did the Malaysian bloggers proud with your reporting and unpdating of results.
Thank you very much.
Hi Anil
Thank you (and all the other bloggers and the poll watchers too) for all your hard work in keeping us informed.
DSAI is a “Duppy Conqueror” (Brother Bob Marley’s song) indeed!
Lyrics from the song are as follows:
The bars could not hold me/Force could not control me
They try to keep I down/But Jah put I around
Yes, I’ve been accused/Wrongly abused now
But through the power of the Most High/They got to turn me loose now
Dear Anil,
Your biased live coverage of the PP buy-election was disgusting to say the least. It seemed like the Barisan Nasional was non-existent in PP. The fact that more than 15,000 people voted for Arif Shah is testimony to BN’s popularity. If it were not for the rough house tactics of the PKR goons, more legitimate voters would have made it to the polling stations. You and your ilk ought to be detained under the ISA and the keys thrown away.
You are partisan, unfair, biased, and a false witness to the events in PP. Like the 31,000 odd who voted for Anwar, you are ungrateful for the development and progress wrought by the BN. Honestly ask yourself: Would you even own a laptop or even know how to use the Internet if not for the education that the BN gave you? Just like the other bloggers and commentators on the blogsites, you bite the hand that feeds you. You are despicable and so is Raja Petra and the likes of him.
When the BN government finally wipes out the Opposition from the face of this Earth, we’ll be coming after you and all of your ilk for the lies and ridiculous untrue propaganda that you spread to the innocent rakyat. Unfortunately it seems now that a large minority of the rakyat are stupid enough to pay attention to the lies of the Opposition. The BN will educate them very soon and I assure you it will be a painful lesson indeed.
BN Sakthi!!!
Hi Anil
I was concern about the voters turn out Vs the total casted votes The whole night in Astro Awani they saying 65% turnout and I was using my calculator and see something is wrong with the figure.
My concern is from where the figure 65% came? When people go in to vote their names are check, read & striked from the list so the total striked names should be the total turn out. So the Striked names & Total voted ballot count end of the day should be tally.
There could have been 65% turn out but 80% votes in the box, the difference of 15% could have been coming from (where)?
Just a thought - You know la Anything is possible now adays.
What is Meredeka? It was merely a holiday for me. It was the same for most of us born after Meredeka. The spirit of Meredeka was never with us.
It takes a simply by-election of Permatang Pauh, to gives us a true new meaning of Meredeka. We have been given hope and looking forward for a new horizon which is coming soon. It will be a fantastic feeling looking forward for this coming 31st August and thereafter.
Thanks to you Datuk Seri, you have given us hope to look forward for a NEW Malaysia.
Team Pakatan, keep up your good work no matter whatever obstacles you may meet in this crusade for Justice.
May GOD Bless you guys always!
Meredeka! Meredeka! Meredeka!

UMNO leaders are a laughable lot …. they blame this squarely on our current PM that they lost because of Malaysian hate our current PM.
These people just don’t get it. We hate the damn ******* UMNO/BN parties and everyone in it especially those holding positions plus all the …. corrupt cronies irregadrless of race.
Sulk or blame all you one. Whether it is Sept 16 or next general election, UMNO/BN will NOT BE THE NEXT GOVERNMENT IN THIS COUNTRY
Dear Anil,
I think you guys the blogger deserve a Nobel Prize awards for your writing. Well done.
Dear Anil,
Thank you for your live coverage of PP by-election. We Malaysians of all races are hand in hand to support DSAI and his reform agenda. We hope that PR will soon take over the goverment by Sept 16 to manage this country we love. For the people of Permatang Pauh, representing the rest of the 27 million humble Malaysian citizens we would like to thank you and salute you for making the right choice. It was not that you have made Anwar to win but you have made all Malaysians to win… A BIG THANK YOU!. And for BN Shakthi! please wake up! and don’t use the word Shakthi for BN anymore… Shakthi is totally the opposite meaning for BN… it only suits for PR.
Dear Anil & all bloggers,
Thank you for your coverage & updates during the election. I was eagerly waiting for each update from you guys!
I’m no blogger but you say that I’m part of the bloggers support group.
God bless, keep & protect you guys!
You’re the MAN!
wow… the extra 15% could be phantom votes???
what did the EC say?
btw, you guys have done a marvelous job. well done.
BN Partyman,
Be a gentleman and just shake hands with a “Thank you, it was a good fight”.
I hope you do not take after Barisan N katak dibawah tempurung mentality and blame “lost cyber war” “we expected to lose PP anyway that’s why we send the entire UMNO machine to PP” or “it’s a working day” for BN’s loss.
And you better get used to the majority votes and majority voice from now on, since this is a democratic country, where the majority speaks, not N speaks.
Read my lips (fingers): We are sick of the sodomy lies, the Petronas rip-off lies, the terrible public transport so that Proton survives, the racist divide and the pathetic state of Malaysians kow tow to the UMNOputeras’ bingeing, the (certain unscrupulous) judges.. and of course the national invention of Ali Babas.
We thank BN that we are not like Indonesia… If we import more corruption into our govt, very soon we will be maids in HK or Japan.
When the PR government finally wipes out the BN bovt from the face of this Earth, we’ll be coming after you and all of your ilk for the ill-gotten riches… lies and ridiculous untrue propaganda that you spread to the innocent rakyat.
However, the reality is UMNO is continue to be more cruel and hard towards the rakyat. UMNO will use their ACA … against members of the MP, wile valid corruption cases sit KIV indefinitely. Nothing new here.
I thank all bloggers for their voicing out their mature insight into poverty, politics, economics and the daily things - for I’ve certainly not purchased any newspapers since before GE, except to check out JJ or Ikea sales.
Surprise no denial or explanation or correction from SPR on 65.2% voter turnout at 7.30 pm vs 81% at 10 pm. More so coz SPR had at 12 noon projected 95%.
To friends here, say ‘it’ la! (since no correction from SPR).
Could have been actually 65.2% = 38025 votes.
Anwar’s share reported then at 31000. No way denying this.
Therefore, Arif’s = 7,000 votes
Anwar won. Majority 24000.
VERY BAD FOR PM’S AND TPM’S HEART.
Arif’s share suddenly increased to 15400. Could have been more but were there more to set off 24K while all eyes were watching.
So Anwar won but majority reduced to 15600.
BETTER FOR THE TWO’S HEARTS.
ONLY A THEORY FROM A MIND LOADED WITH CONSPIRACIES!
