Caution: Video contains graphic scenes that could disturb viewers.
Kugan Ananthan, 22, from Puchong was arrested on 15 Jan in connection with car theft cases. He collapsed and died on 20 January at the Taipan police station in Subang Jaya.
A Serdang Hospital post-mortem revealed he died due to ‘liquid in his lungs’. The family are now seeking an independent post-mortem.
Klang MP Charles Santiago was reported as saying that statistics revealed in Parliament last year showed that there were 1,535 custodial deaths in the country between 2003 and 2007.
And the government has still not yet set up an Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission, a key recommendation of the Royal Commission.
Quickly get all the ISA detainees out of the Lock up. Otherwise the tragedy might happened again. Next excuse the police might give will be “the detainee death cause by choking of roti canai”
The Pakatan should channeled all their manpower to intensify action or campaign to release all the ISA detainee. All of them and their family worried and suffered a lot. Also seek international community to pressure the government to release the detainees.
If not it might happened to one of the PAKATAN RAKYAT members in future because of of them are vulnerable to police forces.

Woody asked “Where is our big outrage and demo ?
Where is the front page in Star and Utusan ?
Where is our TV3 RTM headline news ?”
The reason for the absence of outrage?
this mutilated body is that of an Indian. Any wonder why Hindraf has attracted more support than the MIC …which over the years of extra judicial killings of indians, chose to look the other way, downplayed the deaths in lock ups and in fact kept urging the marginalized, socially displaced lot to be grateful to their supreme leaders for the crumbs thrown at them.

Visit…..www.makkal.org and see more pictures on this issue…
..The public has generally lost respect for the Polis force..
…
It’s not even worth discussing about their wrongs…
All those who haven’t joined any Political Party – PKR…DAP or PAS.. please do so.. Only then can we expect some change, instead of just posting comments… from the luxury of your air-cond room..
…The whole ruling Party has to go… Only we can make it happen… So…. Let’s work on it..

I am saddened with the brutality against the Mr. Kugan, what a shame on the police force. Now we know why every year (so many) inmates die in police lock up and this figure does not include those with diseases dying in lock-ups. And they denied the family entry to the mortuary to see his body… Its a shame, the IGP and the Botak Minister is answerable, all those involved must be punished!!
HIDUP RAKYAT!

I agree with Malcolm X, there was no (sign) of an autopsy being perform on the deceased (unless the coroners can sew up much better than most surgeon). (If an autopsy was not carried out), i wonder how the PDRM knew there was water in the lungs?…
Whether he committed car theft or not, it is not for the police to decide and judge him. Furthermore, I don’t see it as Police brutality against Indians, all I see is Police brutality against a fellow Malaysian. Malaysians, regardless of race or religion, should be outraged by this. I do not wish to see any more news of such atrocities against a fellow human.
Condolences to the family.

I too am trully saddened by the tragic death of our Malaysian Brother, Kugan. No matter what the excuse of our PDRM, it is plain to see that he died in thier custody AND that he had bruises all over while in custody. They is NO excuse for a HeEalthy young man in his early 20′s to die with water in his lungs or for any other reason, which we may not be aware.
I am sure if he was not held by the PDRM, he would still be alive and today he would not be filled be bruises.
Sometimes it is very hard NOT to be angry with our Police. Too much brutality and abuse over the years by them (Police) has really given the Police a VERY bad reputation in the eyes of the general public, and by our BN not taking decisive action to revamp and correct their performance, has given both the BN and our Police, a reputation they both deserve,…
They have themselves to blame.
Well – if both the PDRM and BN want us rakyat to change our perception – they must earn it. NOT just shout out that things are going to get better and come up with silly slogans (eg. Saya ANTI Rasuah etc. which go nowhere to reform themselves). SO PDRM – truly reforms yourselves and show us GOOD police activity over a period of time and YOU may eventually one day correct that terrible mark on your character & reputation. Otherwise it will stick.
So POLICE reform yourselves. IGP & CPP Selangor – resign over this tragic incedent as your are utlimately responsible. Bring the Police Personnel who caused his death to justice, charge them and the OCPD for the crime that has occured
No more excuses. The buck MUST STOP at the top.

Police are doing their job!!!
I saw this on Malaysiakini and also on Youtube.com.
The site url is here: http://www.malaysiakini.tv/video/16623 and the youtube video is located at the bottom.
A few days after this happened, a friend of mine, her neighbor got robbed of her car by a car thief, she was beaten up when she resisted. Another friend of mine was slashed by snatch thieves with a knife when she fought them, she has scars over her neck, arms and body.
Not far from the place where I live, in one of the streets, my neighbor woke up, and was going to work, two robbers placed a parang on his neck and forced him to give the keys of his Toyota Harrier or he will die. The two men were standing inside his house compound coolly waiting for him to go to work.
Many of my colleagues in the office (ladies) have scars on their hands and legs from being dragged on the road and beaten with a stick by snatch thieves on motorbikes. One of my friend’s girlfriend was raped by an Indian taxi driver some years back. She had rights too, don’t you think so?
So many criminals running around, free and committing crimes over and over again.
Some of us have gone through being robbed and the above experiences. The victims have rights too, not just the robbers.
I remember making a police report after my house was burgled and the policeman on duty said, “When we question the suspects abit rough, you the public complain. When you yourself get beaten up and robbed, then you say something different, especially when you are the ones suffering.”
I think suspects shouldn’t be “dead” after questioning. But I think the police have to be tough against criminals.
Do you like to be slashed with a parang? Do you like your wives, kids and parents to be harmed? Do you like to be robbed? Have your car stolen with a knife at your neck? So many innocent civilians have suffered because of criminals. What about the families of the victims?
I think the police is doing their job, it’s not easy dealing with hardened criminals. In the heat of passion, things happen.
I sympathize with the family of Kugan (see video below) but the police help protect us against criminals and they risk their lives fighting these thugs. Dealing with hardened criminals need really tough police force.

Those who claim tat they’re Indians heroes should instead put in efforts to address the problem where the majority of CRIMINALS like Kugan are Indians, compared to Indians % in this country.
Why Indians take to crimes easily ?

Usual line of defense that can possibly & likely to happen …. the body wasn’t like that after the autopsy. Both police and hospital personnel (may) testify to this under oath…. Someone must have battered the body in order to justify a probe and a case. People had forced their way into the mortuary. So this was another possibility that the body had been tampered with. There are also so many other possibilities. Court (could) then rule out insufficient evidence. Case closed. Just like (many) past cases.

Anil, would you pls put this thread as priority until the case is brought to justice? Thanks
Just follow the sequence and the remarks comments made, its grossly a big lie from top to bottom.
From capturing to these:
1)Suddenly drop dead after drinking a glass of water
2)Died of breathing difficulties
3)Record the statements of two deputy ministers in connection with the morgue incident ( Trying to push blame to others )
4)died due to fluid in his lungs
5)died of lung infection
Selangor police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar said that the first post-mortem found there was “NO FOUL PLAY”
“Even given 2nd post mortem what if they are not happy with the results? There’s no end to this. (Poor mother is talking about life and death, this dumb Khalid talks about being happy or not)
No provision for 2nd autopsy? GO GET ONE THEN!! Stupid!
NOW, With the outcry and photos from so called ppl who tempered with evidence..!!! Who is lying? This is another example how mighty is our police force. The culprit will (in all likelihood) walk free, just watch!!! There is no justice in Malaysia. Can we have the next election, quick. These people must be put on trial.
God is watching, you can run but you can’t hide-
Justice will catch up with all these cowards whoever they may be!

No Criminal activity is condoned. BUT it is also not the job of the police to take a suspect into custody and then aparently beat him to death.
The job of the Police is to apprehend, investigate enough to have a case that can be taken to court. Let then the Attorney General do his job to procecute and The Judge then sentences the suspect based on the evidence adduced from their investigation.
If many suspects die while in remand, then the investigation techniques of our police are truly brutal. OR is this all they know of how to investigate…
No one condones the wrongdoings of a criminal BUT to have suspects die in remand while in the lock up is TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE.
So CKT, do not get mixed up. Police MUST apprehend criminals and take them to court. Being tough with criminals DOES NOT give them the right to beat the life out of a man, or even to beat a man in the lock up. Where do u draw the line?? One day it may be you, me or even a loved one who is arrested as a suspect and if our Police do not act like an modern educated force, they will then not stop beating the heck out of you, me and the ones we love.
I am sure our police academy does NOT teach our Police that proper investigation techniques involve trashing the man. Or maybe it is…. for we have an ex IGP who did beat the heck out of an Ex Deputy PM. Maybe it is too engrained in the Police as a “proper” investigative technique.
Sigh… when will we the general public learn that the POLICE do NOT have any right to hit a man in the lock up when he is cuffed and at the total mercy of the police. Yet we have people saying we have to be tough. By all means be tough and investigate throughly so that the suspect can be brought to justice. BUT beating a man in the lock up is going way over the accepted line.
by & by CKT, you do not have a monopoly of being a victim to crime… Beating a man to death when he is unable to defend himself is REALLY A CRIME.

CKT,
I believe u r either jumping the conclusion or reading too much MSM. The issue of Kugan is not whether or not he did commit the crime he was accused of. For that, we have the judiciary.
Being a victim of a crime does not mean u have the right to execute an alleged criminal. The Police’s duty is to investigate, apprehend and hand over the criminal to be prosecuted in a court of law. Although i too may feel like beating a criminal to pulp when reading news on the atrocities commited, I am reminded that i can’t be judge, jury and executioner.
If the person is guilty, then prove it in a court of law. If not, then release him. Kugan is an “alleged” criminal. His guilt is yet to be determined. Consider this; “wat if Kugan didn’t commit the crime?” How would that make you feel reading about his death in police detention? Our Justice system dictates that everyone is innocent till proven guilty.
I resent your statement “majority of CRIMINALS like Kugan”. What evidence do u have to back ur statement?.

Why is it that the Indians are readily turning to crime ?
90% of the heavy crimes in this country are committed by Indians.
can we solve this indian criminals problem instead of blaming the police ?????

CKT, again u state “Kugan is a CRIMINAL”. Do u have proof of this? Even the police said that he is only a suspect. How do u know for a fact that he is a criminal? You must be some type of psychic to know who’s a criminal or who’s not?
As for Janice, where did u get ur statistics that “90% of the heavy crimes in this country are committed by Indians”? Please do not jump conclusions. However, in this issue, we are not discussing the criminal problem. We are discussing the issue of police brutality and prisoner abuse while in detention. I don’t care whether the criminal is a Malay, Chinese, Indian or even Indonesian for the matter.

CKT,
YOur logic as expressed above in mind boggling. Sometimes when we have nothing intelligent to say, it is better to remain silent. If at all our Police investigative techniques is like what you write above, then you and the PDRM are truly brothers in arms.
No matter what – the police CANNOT and MUST NOT beat a man while in lock up. They are there to uphold the law and there is NO Law to say – beat him up in the lock up for the answers we want and if we do not get what we want – beat him up more.
Yes, we have lots of crime in our midst presently but that too is because our Police do not show their presence enough. Their pathetic excuse of not enough men is so overuse that one has to say that – it is still your fault for not having enough personnel when we have ONE of the biggest Ratio of Govt. Servants to Population.
No- even with enough men, our Police service today is pathetic, and the last straw is this man’s death in their lock up.
(If the PDRM insist on beating) any man up – then we MUST change the Name of our Police to POLICE DERA RAKYAT MALAYSIA. This would then better reflect the way they (want to treat) us Malaysians.
iOur police have been recently getting the brunt of a lot of criticism BUT the sad fact is – they deserve it because the Public are only wroting what is seen of them.
When they improve – we will give them credit where and when credit is due. At this present point of time – they deserve our disdain for (the death of this) man in the lock up

My Indian brothers and sisters
Life has always been hard for you
They toiled and made wealth for the country
The descendants are made to beg
For a living
Their sweat dripped and wet the earth
Your ancestors toiled hard
Thinking that their descendants
Would have a better life
Their ignorance
Made them slaves to the Whites
And beggars now
Never dreamt of coming to
This land they toiled
To give everyone
A decent life
You are destined by fate
To be born in this bhumi
They have left you
You should never lose pride, though
Wake up and live
A life of inspiration
Every cloud has its silver line
It’s only when you fall
Will you wake up
The time now is to wake up
And learn to live a progressive life
This must be
The aspiration of your forefathers.
My deepest sympathy to Kugan’s family

janice ng, is it possible for you to show the prof on the statement that you have made on January 25th, 2009 at 9.36am. I don’t get you. Now, we are not talking about the racial anyway. The matter is why a man can died while he is in custody.
Please do not make any nonsense statement like this anymore.
My deepest condolence to Kugan’s family

This showed that he INVOLVED in and COMMITTED the crime ? Dont let your Indian racism blind your sense of right/wrong !!!
Let the Police do their JOB..!!

CKT,
For your info, i’m not an Indian. Ur mentality shows severe brainwashing by MSM or maybe you r what people termed “UMNO cybertroopers”? This is an issue of suspects dying whilst in Police custody. As I said to janice ng, this is not a racial issue. This issue is similar to the case of excessive force against the residents of Cheras Mahkota.
I wonder where did u get the info that Kugan led the Police to the hideout of the cars? The MSM, or maybe your fellow PDRM officers? If he was indeed involved in the crime, does that give (anyone) the (right to kill or torture) him?
It is quite appropriate that you state “Let the Police do their JOB..!!”. Last time i checked, the PDRM’s JOB is only to investigate and apprehend criminals. (Are actions resulting in the custodial deaths of) “suspects/criminals” included in their job description? Maybe UMNO updated their job description recently? Wonder wat else they added? C4 “nuisances”, disrupting peaceful vigils, escorting “Govt-approved street demos” and my current favorite “protecting civilians by arresting under ISA”.
