Congrats to the BN! It finally broke the Pakatan’s winning streak on the peninsula. There will be much rejoicing in the mainstream media about how the tide has turned.

But at what cost?

In its desperation to win in its own stronghold, Umno put up a popular local candidate whom its own party disciplinary board had found guilty of “money politics” (let’s call a spade a spade and refer to it as corruption). A candidate who perhaps best reflects the ethos of the party – at a time when the MCA itself is in utter disarray following the PKFZ debacle.

What message does this send out about “1Malaysia” and “1World”? We might as well disband the MACC…

Says an observer who was closely following the by-election campaign:

I feel sad for the nation. It has gone three steps backwards after leaping two steps into a new era of  non-partisan politics and nation building.

The electoral process is back to ‘door gifts’ (who said money politics?), same old racial and religious platforms, the questionable postal votes system, new swimming pool, use of government machinery to win.  Even TM and Tengku Razaleigh recognised the wrong choice of candidate and the message it would send out….

“But who cares … as long as we win.”

(Meanwhile) the MCA will  be buried in the mud of PKFZ… (and Samy is finished too).

The Elections Commission appeared more interested in removing party paraphernelia and symbols on polling day instead of clamping down on the obvious abuses during the campaign period such as the promise to turn Port Dickson into an Army Town with all kinds of facilities. It seemed more interested in picking out the fly in the soup than chasing away the 600-pound gorilla in the kitchen.

OneMalaysia indeed.

  1. As long as you win some and I win some, what is a bit of corruption?

That seems to be the message that comes out of this by-election.

If such mentality persists, generations to come will not be able to forgive us for tolerating corruption, especially when the country runs out of resources in the not so distant future.

  2. Hi ANIL,

Pls. get real & accept Pakatan Rakyat’s defeat to the mighty BN like a man. No point trying self console yaself.

BN is indeed coming back & they’re coming back FAST & STRONG (just like ISA SAMAD)

From HERO to ZERO & then back to HERO.

That’s how BN is gonna be eventually. As for Pakatan Rakyat, try sustaining where they are now & be careful they don’t become an eventual ONE TERM WONDER.

  3. Forget about the postal votes issue. Its irrelevant. We even lost the residents vote , ie even if ALL of the postal votes were disbarred from voting, we still lost.

Dont just look at PAS alone at this loss. PKR and to a larger extent, DAP had as much a role to play in this defeat.

    Losers are aplenty:
    1.PM and his Ministers.
    2.Mainstream newspapers and it’s editors/journalists(sic).
    3.The postal voters.
    4.Dignity.

  7. hey! corruption is good for Bagan Pinang. It brings money into the area. It brings food on the table. What is the point of being clean when one is hungry and without a roof over the head. That is why Isa won in Bagan Pinang. PAS can only offer salvation after one is dead.

  8. 1Swallow doesn’t make a Summer. 1Win for BN/UNMO, so what?
Actually it could a blessing in disguise for PAS to be humble after the Hassan Ali rhetorics, since the Pas leadership doesn’t lift a finger to reign him.
This greatly disturb the non-malays,the kingmakers, what if PAS gather the most seats amongst the PR in GE13 with the kingmakers votes.

  9. There never was an iota of doubt that BN would win from day 1. LGE had stated if Isa is the candidate the chances of BN winning is 70%. Bagan Pinang had always been a BN stronghold. Anyway, the lost is a good omen for the PR to sit up and restrategise. The question is party first or coalition first. There is nothing wrong with PAS at all but for certain individuals like hasan ali and the doubtful stand of its dpm and the member from Bandar Baru who is creating much rifts and doubts about the ability of PR to stick and work as one. I do not know where Nasharuddin Mat Isa will stand in the next election. He will keep on running from seat to seat to seek to be relevant because he knows without Hadi, he will be thrown out of the party and the rakyat because of his inconsistent stand and his commitment to PR. We need men like Husam Musa in PAS to bring back the ooomph and beliefs, courage and the will to fight as one. Anyone the status quo remains the same except that we Malaysians again showed that corruption does not matter and is acceptable in our society! Well done, Makkhal Sakthi, Najib is correct to launch this party as it is clear that MIC is now totally irrelevnt to the Indian community.

    • Tired,
LGE is playing a psychological warfare. Anyway, it’s not the end of the world for Pakatan Rakyat to lose the election. Unlike Anil, the end of the world when KBP folks not getting what they wanted. Which fluxuates all the times.
This time I gonna to defend Nasha Mat Isa & Hassan Ali. Those fellas have been very quiet.

      Tired,
Look at the bright side. Nizar & the gang can psycho the BN folks to have a SNAP poll in Perak. Lets see how big TOKZ is. Whether TOKZ is a jantan pushing for earlier dissolution in Perak. Settle the constituitional problems once for all

      TOKZ,
Kalau kamu betul betul, panggil Zambry buat SNAP poll di Perak, We will accept the defeat magninamously if BN win big
Lets see BN is really strong…..

      Pakatan Rakyat,
Back to the drawing board……Next Perak & Sarawak to fight on

  10. The increase majority came mostly from the indians and chinese voters. What were the factors that had led to such a huge swing ? Were the factors local or national ? If PR is serious about improving its image and chances of winning they must not only do post-mortem which is mostly gratuitous talk shop but must go down to the common folks in PD and ask them why they had voted for BN and if they had any negative perceptions of PR. In the matter of public perception one shouldn’t guess but really go down to the ground and ask.

  12. The election bagan pinang also demonstrated a serious flaw in the democratic principle that the majority is always right. The majority is seldom, if ever, is right. It had always been the quiet still voice that is sensible and sane in an insane world.

One very wise man had even been able to predict if a society will collapse by how supportive a society is of spiritual quest by individuals. If respect is lost on those cultivating the spirit the society is heading for a long spell of disharmony and pervasive sufferings. Is malaysia on such a threshold ?

  13. UMNO won the seat but it does not really reflect the people’s sentiment in the country. It is more of a local sensation, nothing beyond that. This can happen in a by-election of this nature. Isa is a local boy who gets good support from the locals. Why the extra support for him? It is the Isa-MB factor. The people’s support here for Isa is a sign that the present MB is less popular among Isa supporters. We can soon see a ‘war’ between these two factions. UMNO is not settled in Negeri Sembilan. The war has just begun between the two factions. This flash in the pan in Bagan Pinang is more of an indicator that Isa still has his supporters against the MB. The people voted in Isa because of this vengeance. The postal votes have helped Isa, as expected. Nothing can be done here to decrease support for Isa or for that matter any BN candidate. Pakatan should realise that they have to bicker less in the public. PAS should be talking more about ‘food on the table’ or the economy rather than ‘people’s lifestyle’. PAS, unfortunately, has not changed in its style of politics. It should adopt progressive politics rather than scaring the people openly by commenting on their lifestyles. Discuss these issues close-door and not to the media. Religion, yes. But, how about the economy, employment…any blueprint on this? The loss here is not going to dent Pakatan. It’s a lesson to be learnt. This fall will make PAS and Pakatan rise in future elections. They will change, hopefully, and become more mature in politics. PAS should not repeat history: after the unity government issue the by-election in Manek Urai saw a small majority win for PAS; after the Hassan Ali issue in Selangor Bagan Pinang saw a big majority win for UMNO. What next, PAS?

PAS & Pakatan Rakyat can’t even defeat a supposedly corrupted man. Infact PAS & Pakatan Rakyat got SMASHED & BASHED to their grave instead by this supposedly corrupted man.

  15. I think it was a half hearted campaign, it was like PR already knew and gave in. By right seeing that Isa was no light weight, I expected all the heavy weights of PR to be camped there for the whole period with house to house campaign by bigwigs.

If PR thought that this election was like any other and a bit here and there would do it, now they know for sure. It was a lacklustre campaign. Maybe this will wake them up, they started becoming sloppy!!!!!!!

  16. The loss of Non Malay (especially Indian)votes in this by election is partly due to Hindraf and its leaders call to vote against or refrain from voting to teach Pakatan a lesson for the Kampong Buah Pala Fiasco seems to have worked in favour of BN. Besides some non-malays have also been cheesed of with PAS chauvinistic manoeuvres in Selangor with Hassan Ali taking the lead in antagonizing non muslims with his Talibanistic rules and statements. The Cow-head demonstrator’s actions seem to have been forgotten. Thanks to the mainline media’s slanted reporting. The people in rural areas where BN draws its support do not have access to internet and therefore are ignorant of alternative media. That is their loss ignorance is bliss. How on earth can Malaysia progress and raise our standard of living if BN intends to keep such people poor and ignorant to exploit them only during elections and afterwards forget them. Pakatan should also take heed not to take the same path and be more people orientated as it is the Rakyat who empower them and without the Rakyat’s support they will never be able to defeat BN and corruption that has permeated this society lest we breed a perverse generation lacking in righteousness. The Bible says in Proverbs 13:34 Righteousness exalts a nation but sin is a disgrace to any people. Malaysians are disgraced in the eyes of International community for electing corrupt politicians to the Government. Think what that will do for foreign investment intending to invest in our country can they trust our government and politicians?

  17. Hi Sir,

Sad but true. It’s clear to see ‘the rakyat’ is slowly losing faith & confidence towards Pakatan Rakyat. The constant bickering among PR parties in the public had caused severe damage to PR’s dreams.

Moreover, ‘the rakyat’ perceive PR as “One Big Fat Liar”. The reasons being so are due to the following:

    1) Anwar Ibrahim & his 916 fairy tale. He spoke so much about it but only to end up as a Bed Time story.

    2) Prior to the last G.E., PAS & DAP claimed they have sorted out their differences & they’re now BROTHERS. However, the recent squabbles between these 2 parties had shown PAS & DAP are plain liars. They lied to the public regarding their relationship & they lied just to garner support. Well, they can give all sorts of excuses & lies but the truth indeed never hides!!!

    3) PAS says ‘NO’ the booze sales, while DAP says ‘YES’ to booze sales. Since PAS & DAP are from 1 family…..who is actually calling the shot??? They can’t even compromise a small issue behind closed door & this showed they had lied to the public since the last G.E.

    4) DAP’s Alternative Budget had given PAS & PKR a bad name. The arrogance & disrespectful behaviour of DAP in releasing their own Budget made Pakatan Rakyat looked like a BROKEN FAMILY with no whatsover rules, respect & protocol.

    5) Isa Samad may once be a corrupted man but this corrupted man can’t even be defeated by a supposedly up & coming party. What does this say??? Pakatan Rakyat is WORSE than a corrupted man.

    6) If given no choice, Bagan Pinang folks would rather vote & support CORRUPTION instead LIARS. With corruption, atleast the people gets a small chunk of it but with LIARS…..the people gets NOTHING except, lies, fairy tales, bed time stories, wayang kulit, drama minggu ini & bla, bla, bla.

  20. SCENARIO #1:
Isa Samad is indeed a CORRUPTED man. He had served his punishment for money politics. Such a person is NOT worthy to be a wakil rakyat.

    SCENARIO #2:
Pakatan Rakyat had made numerous lies to the rakyat. The 916 cerita donggeng, the lie about PAS & DAP have sorted out their differences since the last G.E. but only to end-up quarreling worse off than before, Kampung Buah Pala episode & bla, bla, bla. Such alliance/party MUST not be voted in to lead the country.

    QUESTION #1:
What happens if there is no choice but to vote for either a CORRUPTED man or a BIG FAT LIAR???

    ANSWER:
CORRUPTION is better than LIES. The Bagan Pinang by-election had proven this.

  21. UMNO is more accomodative and cutting thro’ non racial lines in its recent implemented Policies Change where the ordinary people can relate like the Amanah Saham 1Malaysia where the non Malays are given the opportunities to be a part to participate unlike ASM, Wawasan 2020 the non Malays has practically no chance to buy!!! This is the unique scheme guarantees by our Government and the high interests return from the investment really helps the senior citizens, ordinary wage earners and average middle income groups. We are grateful and can feel the different in this Big Change and feel like Malaysian!!

    • How do you know there will be “high interest returns” when you just bought it ? They call it a “bond fund” but it’s not even close to a bond fund. Read the fine print – it does not give guaranteed returns…

  22. Rasuah dan tipu memang BERSALAH,
Macam mana kami nak undi dan PANGKAH?,
Pakatan Rakyat tipu manakala Isa Samad MERASUAH,
Tapi Bagan Pinang tolak tipu dan undi sokong RASUAH.

Pakatan Rakyat kalah pasal suka TIPU,
Tak henti fitnah dan tipu sejak DAHULU,
Mereka ingat fikiran rakyat semacam orang ULU?
    Padan muka sekarang kalah…

Isa Samad mungkin jahat dan suka RASUAH,
Tapi dia masih menang dengan MARUAH,
Isa Samad tunjuk Pakatan Rakyat jalan KELUAR,
Orang Bagan Pinang marah Pakatan Rakyat si CELAKA.

Pakatan Rakyat sekarang sedih penuh KASIHAN,
Sedih sampai tak tahu cari ALASAN,
Kenapa nak cabar BN yang GEMILANG?,
    Bila rugi adalah si PAKATAN.

  24. I think the moralising that Isa was a corrupted man and as such UMNO’s victory is tainted sounds patronising and an insult the BP electorate.

Firstly he was found guilty of money politics by his party and was punished for it and not by the criminal justice system. Secondly he had undegone the ban. Even those sentenced by the criminal justice system are allowed to stand for election (like Anwar and LGE).

Whether he can be forgiven best left to the elctrorate of BP and based on the result of the by-election, the voters do think that Isa had paid his dues and a good man to represent them.

As such, we are not in the position to pass judgement on his. Pakatan has even less credibility with its record of ex-convicts among its ranks as MPs and ADUNs. Even Zaid Ibrahim too was expelled once for money politics.
