Solidarity with blocked Malaysian Insider

Concerned and disturbed by the MCMC move to block The Malaysian Insider. The blocking of Sarawak Report, Asia Sentinel, Malaysian Chronicle, and earlier, the Bersih website (now lifted) was bad enough.

What was the reason for the move?

To me, this is a sign of a government afraid of its own shadows, trying to stem the flow of information to the people. It comes at a time when trust in the institutions of government and support for the government of the day is at a low ebb.

Where do they expect people to get the news from? Utusan, NST and The Star?

Aliran has responded with a statement: Blocking The Malaysian Insider is an affront to media freedom

Check out this report from the Committee to Protect Journalists: Amid financial scandal, Malaysia increases pressure on media

DAP Puchong MP and lawyer Gobind Singh Deo says that before taking any action against an individual or organisation, there has to be enough evidence presented to prove the subject guilty. β€œIn this case, before MCMC can even find strong evidence to prove that TMI has violated the law they have decided to ban the website. β€œThis is not right. They should be calling in the editors for questioning but they have not done so thoroughly. β€œThis (banning of TMI over certain service providers) I believe is a legal question and is something that we need to develop and seek… Read more »

I think BN is trying to do to TMI what they have done to The Edge, to deny it from gaining revenue. How dispicable.

1Malaysia blockheads are unaware that blocked sites can be easily accessed by
various means. Useless chips off the regime’s Ruling Bloc of kleptocrats.

Actually many people don’t know how to get pass the blocks on their own. Those who know are in the minority. The general public need to be specifically taught or mirror sites need to be set up just for them, as in the Outsider case. I was talking to some professionals with IT background (USM graduates) 2 nights ago and they were completely clueless! Malaysia definitely offers quality education!

BN is worried about the negative reporting on 1MDB, as it is hiding the truth from rakyat.
Mahathir and Muhyiddin must step up the pressure to expose the truth to the rural people.

Not surprising that we are in the Year of The Monkey: See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil.
The metaphor depends on which interpretation one has for Evil aimed at which side of the political divide.
More monkey business to come like see No Yellow (Bersih?), Speak No Donation, what else?

The sites are still getting a lot of readers. Singapore learned long ago it’s futile. So they decided to upgrade their skills to go after resident people. But UMNO cannot upgrade skill..
