Penang Island mayor Maimunah appointed as UN-Habitat executive director

The UN has just released the following statement about Maimunah Mohd Sharif, who only recently, from 1 July this year, took over as mayor of the Penang Island City Council from Patahiyah Ismail.

Secretary-General Announces Intention to Appoint Maimunah Mohd Sharif of Malaysia Executive Director, United Nations Human Settlements Programme

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, following consultations with the Chairpersons of the regional groups of Member States, today informed the General Assembly of his intention to appoint Maimunah Mohd Sharif of Malaysia as the next Executive Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN‑Habitat).

Ms. Sharif is currently Mayor of the City Council of Penang Island, Malaysia. Prior to her appointment, she was the first woman to serve as Seberang Perai Municipal Council President. She began her career as a Town Planner at the Municipal Council of Penang Island in 1985.
