Storm in a Timah cup blows over

Now can we get on with more important business? That seemed to be the general reaction of many upon learning that the cabinet has allowed the whisky maker to continue using the name Timah for their product.

Yes, Timah just means tin ore, as anyone could have told the bigots that. And no, Timah is not short for the name of the Prophet’s daughter, Fatimah.

It is amazing what a couple of state elections – in Malacca and Sarawak – and a looming general election can do to get rid of this non-issue. After all, how wa the government going to explain this ridiculous controversy to voters? Full article on the Aliran website

Since a whole article is written on this Asian whisky. Lets talk. How long have this producers of the alcohol drink been staying here. Why did they not use an English name for it. Why use a Malay name. Don’t they know Malays equates to Muslims which equates to Islam. Under the Islamic religion alcohol is prohibited. Worse still, why chose a name that seem to resemble one of their religious personalities. You are producing alcohol in a land where Islam is the official religion. You could have given due diligence to finding a name for a Malaysian produced alcohol drink that does not… Read more »

Why use a Malay name?
Probably in line with changing Mat Salleh road name of colonial days to Malay name.

They have chosen some places or maybe certain places to change the names but not all places. Georgetown is still Georgetown and Butterworth is still Butterworth in name. Are you wishing for a (in line) change of names, Yolo ?

Duly noted. Thank you. Sorry about that. Must have been really tipsy from drinking all that tuak. Lets refresh. We have Green Lane, Scotland Road, Hutton Lane, Gurney Drive, Beach Street, Bishop Street, Light Street just to name a few. Don’t see here any in line change of colonial mat salleh road names to malay names.

Northam Road -> Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah.

Currently, if a coffee shop wants to put up a signboard, they have to apply for a license, that’s one. Then, another license (is required) to sell cigarettes and another one to sell alcoholic drinks.

“How many licenses does a coffee shop need? Why is it that during a time when the people are struggling due to the rising prices of goods, the government decides to add more bureaucracy and costs which eventually will burden the people?

If the idea was to give it an Asian look and feel , there are a whole lot of Asian countries from whose language they could have chosen a name . After all, all they needed was a single word or if Tin was what they needed to use, they could have chosen it from any one of those languages and the personalities too.

Notice, have not used any Malay words for the suggestions. Not sure how it might get interpreted. So, its best to leave it out of the picture, especially for those
‘sensitive’ products. Cheers boys.

Whisky is a white mans drink. There are so many words in English that they could have chosen. There were so many Brit’s here since the 1800. They could have easily chosen a name from any one of them. Gurney’s whisky is a nice name. He was a Brit who died here, a soldier too. Could have used his picture. Why choose a picture of a guy with a name like Speedy. The name reminds me of Speedy Gonzales, you know the cartoon character, the little Mexican mouse.

Timah issue was flared up by Amanah + PKR duo (DAP allies). Everyone is trying to out-Malay the other. PAS did something they are supposed to do, banning anything un-Islamic (4d toto). Shriek, what’s the fuss? You are talking non-sense all day while the party you are supporting did absolutely zero for you. How is that winning? If the Chinese were to support BN in the last election, I can hundred percent guarantee that PAS would not even be in the cabinet. yolo, Reply to Wyatt / 18 Nov 2021 9.05am Hello Yolo , as said earlier, in some places the road names has been changed and in some places it has not. There must be some proper reason for it, don’t see there being any issue with it, as long as a name is given to identify the street. So, when Yolo says, “in line with changing Mat Salleh road name of colonial days to Malay name”, it gives the impression that there is some kind of street name change policy in place to change these colonial names. Is there such a policy, Yolo ?… Read more »

When Jalan Semangat is renamed Jalan Prof Khoo Kay Kim, can you recall and ask why? Localized? Recognition of local? Anyway, lots of things happen in Bolehland without any form of policy, this is called consistency of inconsistance, some call it roti canai flip flopping. After days of hard work, people in the west want to wind down and they think alcohol is the answer and so they choose a bottle of hard whisky. Hence, this song –

And if the manufacturer still feel that it must reflect Malaysia made, just call it “MY WHISKY”. Now, lets just wind down listen to this whisky blues while smoking a cigar or two.
