What happened to urban park plan for Jelutong dump site?

As we have heard, PDC is requesting for proposals to redevelop the 53-acre Jelutong dump site. But a masterplan for IJM’s Light Waterfront project in Jelutong indicates that an urban park had been envisaged for the area.

Back in 2008, Jelutong MP Jeff Ooi had said there was a proposal for a 50-acre people’s park on the site of the Jelutong landfill.

Moreover, it is believed the Penang Island Local Plan, approved in 2008 but never gazetted, had designated the area a people’s park. Even before 2008, under the previous administration, one source says part of the area was slated for a Resource Recovery Centre, the remainder an urban park.

So where is the urban park going to be?

Whatever the case, the Jelutong dump site has been poorly managed, and it is not going to be easy to rehabilitate it. There is no record of what has gone into it.

The construction waste dumped there in the last few years is lying on top of a largely solid waste dump. It is unlikely there has been much layering or compacting. And there is no system to handle leachate and methane.

The water front will be no more exclusive to Penangite. Penang Heritage will be mutilated by the sharp claw of CAT. Our environment will be destroyed through the deceit of CAT.

Now we have the mother of all deception that will soon destroyed the very safety, serenity and peaceful living of the housing residents.

The water front in Penang may soon be exclusive to the rich and those from oversea while our Heritage will soon be MUTILATED by the sharp claw of the CAT

Move to preserve Soonstead and Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah
With the proposed development, Soonstead would be mutilated and dwarfed by an 11-storey hotel that would ruin its garden and relationship with the sea.

According to PDC’s website, it’s mission is “To be the premier State agency in making Penang a better place for all through sustainable socio-economic development.” However from what we seen have since the Condos, Apartments and Towers (CAT) regime took over in 2008, they have been busy acting as land brokers – easily the most active one in the country or even the world. The worrying trend is apparent across all state agencies – all of them are singing the same tune that is being dictated by the CM. It is clear that none of them have any independence and… Read more »

From what I hear, the State Government successfully wrested the ownership of this 53-acre reclaimed site from the claimant. Does the dispute over the ownership explain why it was initially so badly managed?

From the way things are developing, the Penang State Government will have a lot of land in future once the reclamation projects are successfully carried out.

Let us just wait and see …

From what I was told, the claimant was purportedly the developer of the Jelutong highway which had been given the “contract” by the previous BN-Gerakan state government since contractually, it could lay claim to any land it could reclaim. Ostensibly, the claim could not be sustained since the land in question came about as a result of the garbage being dumped onto the said site by the state government or its agencies.

Like I said just like Batu Feringghi many of the water front in Penang will soon be exclusive to the rich and people from overseas. You can do your part by rejecting this and that is to reject the CAT at the next GE

When people are struggling financially the human tendency is for them to be envious then complaint a lot.
I bet if they strike rich suddenly e.g. lottery, the next thing they will do is to hunt for exclusive high end condo.
hypocrisy?
