It’s raining kembung in Penang!

This is ground zero of the proposed 4,500-acre land reclamation site off the southern coast of Penang Island, where the state government plans to build three artificial islands.

Supporters of the reclamation claim the area is hardly a major fisheries area.

But as you can see, these fishing waters yield large hauls for the fishermen of ikan kembung or Indian mackerel (widely know as ikan rakyat or the people’s fish), especially during the rainy season like now. Full article on Aliran website

Did not see the kembung, but noticed the prominent 3-coloured flag (Tiga Line???).

Many fish farms around Penang 2nd Bridge and Jerejak coastline.

Anil can host “lawat sambil belajar” to these fish farms as Anilnetto.com outdoor event for readers to better appreciate Penang Aquaculture progress should natural fish stock depletes.

Not just kembong but groupas and red snapers can breed in cages in the seawater.

The success story of local fish breeders.

Most of these premium fishes export to nrighbouring countries for beyter profit margins. So we don’t see them breed Mackerels and may be Jabatan Perikanan can tap theie experiences to help southern island fishermen on how to breed Mackerels/Kembung for local consumption?

This should provide incentives for many to breed prized fishes.

Indonesia’s Japfa builds up fish farms as Asia’s next affordable protein resource

https://www.scmp.com/country-reports/country-reports/topics/singapore-national-day-2021/article/3144650/japfa-builds

Japfa’s fully integrated tilapia operations – traceable from feed to farm and processing – are the largest in Indonesia, with produce also exported to Europe and the United States. Its industrialised farming approach has made animal proteins more accessible and affordable to Asia’s vast population.

The world is shifting toward electric cars.

Malaysia still has no big plan to set up charging stations to cater for green electric vehicles with no carbon emission.

Penang can take the lead to promote electric vehicles ahead of Federal blueprint. CM Chow’s Vision 2030 should take this seriously.

Local fishermen hope to receive ex-gratia payment, new boats and more powerful engines that will enable them to venture further out to fish. These offerings are also among the Social Impact Management Plan (SIMP) benefits for fishermen.

Other SIMP benefits include new jetties for the Permatang Tepi Laut, Sungai Batu, Teluk Kumbar and Gertak Sanggul fishermen units, and a 250m-wide navigation channel that allows 24-hour access to the sea regardless of the tide.

Penang state is a combination of both the island and mainland Seberang Perai ( Utara, Tengah, Selatan). One needs to come out of the island cocoon and look over the channel. Plenty of land to work on. Intelligent planning is required. And beyond that we have Kedah.

The Working Group proposes that the State Government should help establish a favourable environment (such as gazetting an Aquaculture Industry Zone and setting up a cluster system in the Zone providing appropriate facilities) not only for commercial investors, but also community-based operations.

Specifically, aquaculture can learn from the existing support schemes for paddy farmers (e.g. establishment of cooperatives, technical and financial help etc) and create a viable livelihood for the fishing communities. Other incentive schemes may include a start-up fund, risk-sharing instruments and R&D support to help community-based aquaculture and domestic consumption-oriented production.

A comprehensive regulatory framework targeting the aquaculture sector in Penang should be adopted to further develop the sector. The regulator framework should identify the suitable zones for aquaculture activities (taking into account social, environmental and ecological impact on land and marine resources), and mandate the adoption of Best Aquaculture Practices Guidelines / Standards (for example MyGap) coupled with routine inspections. The high standards currently imposed on exported produce should also be extended to locally consumed fish / seafood. The State Government should introduce an aquaculture support scheme to help further expand the role of aquaculture in providing food security to… Read more »

5. Comprehensive Regulatory Framework and Support Scheme for Aquaculture (2024) ——————————————————————————————————- Penang’s aquaculture sector is an important and growing sector and accounts for more than 10% of national aquaculture production. Currently, aquaculture focuses on high value export-oriented fish and seafood species, and is mainly dominated by marine aquaculture. With the dwindling wild fish stocks and catches, aquaculture can potentially play an important role in providing food security for the people of Penang in the future. However, while Penang wants aquaculture to reach its full potential, it also needs to make sure that aquaculture is carried out in a safe and… Read more »

Mamak Nasi Kandar many consider iconic in Penang.

The more commercially successful one should sponsor Penang Football Club to gain more publicity. Imagine Batu Kawan stadium or City stadium filled with digital images of Nasi Kandar dishes.
