Paving paradise … again

Today, I was horrified to see an popular park in Penang being ‘upgraded’. This involves knocking down old concrete structures and building an even bigger one, and as if that was not enough, pouring concrete over a large patch of open space (for what, I have no idea).

We are so short of open green spaces, I cannot for the life of me imagine why planners would want to pour concrete on existing spaces.

And with climate change and flash floods more frequent and sea levels rising, the last thing we should be doing is plastering the earth with more concrete.

People should reflect on the lyrics of this song.

Foon Yew High School in Johor somehow is teaching its students another lesson – that regardless of race, believe money is King to be worshipped, that it is alright to be not dishonest if your ultimate goal is get more money. If you succeed and do not end up in jail, then you are clever, to be lauded and to be emulated if given half the opportunity. On this premise, Najib is the ultimate “hero”, our boss and a great example for kids.

I wonder if johor Chinese are so desperate for attention thus worshipping bossku in temple and school? But more likely it is the work of MCA to please it’s fugitive boss!

Goon Yew school board is an embarrassment in their effort to acknowledge bossku!

Upgraded Penang for March opening is Gurney Walk featuring many eating and drinking holes that could deplete your hard earned savings.

Somehow need to have commercial outlets to draw crowds to sustain the well being of Gurney vicinity?

Mitchell’s inspiration for her song came from a 1969 trip to Hawaii. “I walked over to the [hotel room] balcony and there was the picture-book scenery, palm trees swaying in the breeze and all,” she told New Musical Express. “When I looked down… there below my view was this ugly, concrete car park on the hotel grounds.” This gave her an unforgettable chorus, which has been a nagging reminder to humanity ever since. “Don’t it always seem to go, you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone / They paved paradise and put up a parking lot.” She was… Read more »

Penang is also a car paradise.

As at June 2021, there were 2,778,681 private vehicles registered in Penang, slightly more than double the state population of 1.3 million. There are at least two vehicles for every one person in the state.

Central has no comprehensive transport plan. Public Transport just knows how to add buses. What about roads if the buses are stuck in jams? So far how many buses have added and what have they been doing to be covid safe? Rakyat cant trust Central as Public Transport is Federal matter. If roads are jammed, State widen roads. State does not want rakyat to spend $$ on burning petrol and time sitting in cars.

https://www.songfacts.com/facts/joni-mitchell/big-yellow-taxi This song is about taking things for granted and then missing them when they’re gone. In the first verse she uses Waikiki, Hawaii as an example. It used to be paradise but now it’s a fakey tourist destination. When you fly over the islands all of the other islands are nice and green, but when you go over O’ahu you see Waikiki and Honolulu buildings. Most of this song deals with environmental concerns, but in the last verse, the singer’s boyfriend leaves her (her “old man”). This is where we hear the song’s title for the first time, as… Read more »

Malaysia’s religious rhetoric still regressive, says academic

Most Malaysians were in economic suffering. They should feel a sense of solidarity and push for a more just and better government. If they think along class lines and along the lines of issues rather than racial or religious criteria, then we have a chance of having a better government.

The budgets they worked so hard to boost must be spent – before some real need later in the year threatens to divert it. Apart from concrete for courts (hard to book) and paths, this may entail (a) exercise equipment, benches and gazebos prominently labelled with a politician’s name (b) exotic (imported) plants and trees (c) solar or other lamps, even if the park is closed after dark (d) fountains. For ongoing “development”, all these should collapse or fail within a few years. The overall idea is to (a) “monetise” (extract profit from the commons (b) put the masses in… Read more »

DAP planners say green spot at Habitat Penang Hill big enough.

Concrete to them is equivalent to progress. Just look at number of condos built with low occupancy catering for foreign buyers.

Aliran can join research with Penang Consumer group to publish latest occupancy rate of condos on island?

You mean DAP planners have $$$$ to build condos? It is the businessmen who think is better to build houses and the banks force savers to put $$$ into properties,. Can you ask banks to give higher interest?

A new sea reclamation project off the coast of Muar in Johor, owned by Johor ruler Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, could begin as early as this year.

The size of the venture will be similar to that of the Forest City project in the Johor Straits, which the Johor ruler also has a stake in.
