This time it is jualan murah!

During the last general election campaign in 2013, many residents of Penang Island made a beeline for free dinners, even free beer, dished out almost every night, each time at different locations on the island.

This time, even before the election campaign, ‘excitement’ is in the air once again as folks in Permatang Pauh on mainland Penang turned up for a jualan murah (cheap sale) (see video above), which Umno is touting as a service to the people. (Is it just a coincidence that Nurul Izzah may be contesting in Permatang Pauh in the general election?)

An Umno rep there says the lower prices are possible as they are bypassing the middlemen and obtaining supplies directly from agencies.

This is amazing as even hypermarket Mydin has said it could not sustain the Kedai Rakyat 1Malaysia programme (KR1M), or the 1Malaysia People’s Shop, where it tried to keep prices low. Full article on Aliran website

Najib also advised young Malaysians to differentiate between high living costs and lifestyle spending.

He said they should spend within their means, making a comparison between dining at an expensive Japanese restaurant and a mamak eatery.

“Lifestyle (spending is), for example, when we go to a Japanese restaurant in a well-known hotel, where you have to pay, say RM800 to RM1,000 per person, depending on what you order.

“But if you go to a 24-hour mamak, how much would the meal cost?” he said, to which programme moderator Fizo Omar replied: “RM8.”

Kedah …has started distributing election goodies to households in Alor Setar – 2kg rice, 4 canned food, sugar, mushrooms … and ang pow packet…. GE is near. My advice is to take these goodies but still make a good decision to vote for change.

Ah pek ar. How to change when PSM are fishing for the same opposition votes? They never learn their lessons when their chief lost in kota damansara. PAS took away a major portion of opposition votes. Otherwise the votes would have given to PSM.

The subsidies may be coming from coerced businesses, just as in the case of donations to certain clubs. About 3 years ago, a senior leader made a statement that was tantamount to apartheid in relation to foodstuff wholesalers profiteering. He evaded the monopolies. It is much worse than such venality, and public foolishness when faced with “bread and circuses”. There are developments of low-cost flats – groups of several blocks – left vacant until the paint starts to peel due to such opportunism. Similarly, some of the destitute who are less photogenic or of the “wrong” community have to wait.… Read more »

Parti Sosialis Malaysia central committee member S Arutchelvan said it was disappointing that opposition parties did not show solidarity in protesting against the court’s decision to jail PKR vice-president Mohd Rafizi Ramli. “As we approach the general election, the rakyat have become tired and jaded. Politicians are too engrossed in finding ways to win the election, as opposed to strengthening the rakyat to fight oppression and transgressions. “We are always taught to look at the bigger picture, which only means that we must win, but there are no programmes that strengthen the rakyat and those that help towards increasing the… Read more »

Pakatan Harapan might allow candidates from strategically aligned groups, such as Hindraf, to contest under its banner in the 14th general election, the opposition pact’s chairman Dr Mahathir said. He said Hindraf and another ethnic Indian party, the Minority Rights Action Party (Mira), were not PH component members but have been made associate allies because they were supportive of the coalition. “These parties are interested in working together with PH and they support us. So we need to find a place for them and consider their position,” Dr Mahathir told a press conference at the office of the Opposition Leader… Read more »

Why do it now? If they truly care about the people’s welfare, affordable and accessible essentials should be the norm, not just during elections. How likely are the same people to continue bringing affordable essential goods to the people AFTER the elections?

Sajul, EPF sets a limit to how much a contributor can invest per annum besides monthly deduction from salary. If I have not mistaken, it is 60Kp.a. Average wise, how much can a contributor save up spare cash? Those who are in the finger-burning stock market may migrate to EPF. But still it’s better than bank’s measly & kedekut 1.2 – 1.4%p.a. Now, you know why some are in the Ah Long business or risk investing in money games. My mechanic friend told me business near (2-3 weeks prior) to CNY is real bad this year. Hong Leong and UOB now offer Fixed Deposit rate of 4.3% per annum with minimum fresh fund of RM10K. For seniors, the interest can be credited into savings account monthly. Time to save up as ordinary folks like us have no kleptocratic connection to sustain decent livings.

Now local banks do not pay interest for your saving accounts if monthly average is less than RM10000. Banks are shortchanging poor customers, by July this year Hong Leong is stoping transactions on counter using savings booklet, forcing you (however old you are) to use ATM and internet banking. FinTech is causing inconvenience to many old folks who do not even know how to use ATM, so that the banks can continue to make profits.
