The state government should be thinking of protecting our food security instead of facilitating even more property development (for whom?).
For a start, check out the soaring price of fish. Do we really want fish to be priced beyond the reach of ordinary folk?

Commercial fish farming inside building – time to adopt technology to ensure good fish supply. Penang Jabatan Perikanan can start the project at Batu Maung?
Singapore: THE FISH FARMER
Timeless tradition with a touch of technology
https://www.sfa.gov.sg/fromSGtoSG/farms/farm/Detail/the-fish-farmer
Emphasis is on fish grown in natural environments and in line with tradition, taps on various innovations to enhance productivity on its 4 farms.
Small, traditional farms in Singapore are keeping pace with technological developments, such as alternative fish feed as well as more energy-efficient solutions to improve their farming practices

I have seen many previous comments by readers urging the fishermen to turn to fish farming but so far little us happening. Maybe capital outlay is high? Maybe this time they could use the compensation money to invest in food farming, maybe in cheaper land at Prai? They should think of a new way to earn a living fir subsequent generations.
But do you know the fish farmers in southern Seberang Perai are also worried about the impact of the three-island land reclamation project.
Thousands of opportunities can be failed by a single lame excuse. Think about it!
Images taken by satellite over three and a half years have shown that fishing activities in the waters off south Penang island mostly take place outside the proposed Penang South Islands project site.
Surveyor firm Enviro Land Services has studied 200 satellite images to confirm where fishermen normally fish in the southern waters off Penang island.
https://www.thestar.com.my/news/nation/2022/08/03/200-satellite-images-confirm-little-fishing-activity-at-psi-site
Even if that’s the case, won’t the reclamation have an impact on fishing waters near the site?

Tilapia fish farming we can learn from Thailand.

Most expensive fresh water fish.
Fish farming needs full time effort and attention, requires upgrading of knowledge and skillset.
But coastal fishing is like gig effort, only work as and when you want to (when cash is needed), with plenty of time to rilek and senang lenang.
Tg Bungah assemblyman Zairil Khir Johari claimed that the residents had agreed to release the land when requested by the state government for development.
https://www.thevibes.com/articles/news/58338/tg-tokong-fishermen-promised-to-release-land-when-asked-zairil
Affected residents will be offered medium-cost affordable housing and ex-gratia consolation.
Maybe they want higher compensation, not consolation, like those KL Kampung Baru folks? Greedy you may say. The legal owner of the land must be fair and not set precedent by offering too high payouts. My family members was relocated from KTM land without any compensation, no reason to be extra generous here in terms of consistency.
I like your success story. Keep it up be inspiration to all!
Remember the fate of the various native groups promised compensation.
Government is running out of money. Now removing SST exemption for cars. Also removing price control for cooking oil chicken and eggs. I doubt there is little money for compensation now, until GST is imposed?
Anilverse Resident Economist glissantia to write on the impact of rising oil, chicken and eggs on Malaysian consumers’?
Pakatan Harapan today announced a public conference Sidang Nadi Rakyat (“Conference of the People’s Pulse”) in Kelana Jaya, Selangor on July 2 as a platform for discourse on the rising costs of living and the prices of goods – to allow voters to speak up and influence policymakers on fundamental that also include education, public transport and discrimination against women and youths.
Tomorrow 1 July will be an historic day when we pay high price for cooking oil despite palm oil is losing value in the international market.
Decades of subsidy will start to dwindle, only B40 (Umno target voters) will only enjoy subsidy. M40 is now neglected!
BN has never elevate our earning power via value add and productivity as proven in our low purchasing power with the flaccid Ringgit. We are no longer competitive compared to rising economy of Vietnam and Thailand.
“How does PM’s Ismail Sabri’s paltry RM630 million ‘band aid’ package help Malaysians cope with soaring prices & removal of chicken, eggs and bottled cooking oil subsidies?”
“This is disappointing not only in its small amount but also not comprehensive to help Malaysians in the M40 as well as small and medium scale enterprises”
https://www.malaymail.com/news/malaysia/2022/06/23/guan-eng-says-pms-rm630m-aid-for-key-subsidies-cut-wont-help-low-and-middle-classes/13805
Targeted subsidy had never been transparent. How you define B40? If you are lazy to upgrade skills or undertake lucrative 3D jobs, then the government should not pamper you further.
My family moved up the ladder from B40 (illegal squatters on KTM land) to M40 in 3 generations, start by selling food on roadside to owning a small scale restaurant without government handout due to the local policy not favouring non-Bumi. We must work hard and smart and shed the subsidy mindset.
Cooking oil in Indonesia was selling for 17,300 rupiah per litre – about RM5.15 per litre (1 litre = 1 kilogram). Both Malaysia and Indonesia cooking oil is made of palm oil. Even if Indonesian palm oil mafia exploits the market by doubling the price, it’s still RM10.30 per litre. So, how did Zafrul calculate that the unsubsidised price is RM14.50 per kg, when Indonesia sells for only RM5.15 per kg?

Why PM Sabri checked the price of RM2.99/kg cabbage?

More to show off his expensive shirts!
A mockery to many Malays that could only afford ‘Bundle’ clothings!
Government policies and mismanagement are the root causes for the shortage of fish in local markets, which have in turn forced the prices of fish up, said fishermen.
These fishermen and fishing boat owners in the peninsula are demanding that Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM) chairman Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul show proof to back his claim that they are selling their catch to foreign fishermen far out at sea for excessive profits.

Johor’s Orang Seletar threatened by dwindling seafood catch
https://www.channelnewsasia.com/asia/malaysia-johor-strait-orang-seletar-climate-change-coastal-developments-2766396
The indigenous sea nomads, who have for centuries lived at the Johor Strait between Singapore and Peninsular Malaysia, are grappling with the realities of climate change and the impact of coastal developments.
All peoples outside the monetised economy – including hunter-gatherers such as aborigines – are a threat to capitalism and usury. The general strategy is to elimiate them through “benign” neglect.
Penang government can learn from its counterpart in Johor on how they displaced fishermen for Forest City and Pantai Lido (Iskandar Waterfront) projects without creating any loud protest.
https://www.thestar.com.my/metro/metro-news/2022/03/03/fishermen-in-south-johor-beset-by-challenges-at-every-corner
This issue has been unresolved for years. The fishermen and the authorities ate prolonging the matter. The authoriries must set up commercial fish farming and upgrade the skills of fishermen to be entrepreneurs.
Those fishermen set up illegal settlements after the last tsunami. If illegal farmers in Cameron Highlands can be displaced, I see no reason why these fishermen could be displaced likewise to other places using the same reasoning – not about food security at all.
5 water transporter catamarans currently being built in Vietnam are expected to arrive by the 4h quarter of this year Penang-Butterworth.
https://www.thevibes.com/articles/news/61775/penang-ferry-terminal-upgrades-nearly-complete-ahead-of-schedule
Catamarans displaced the iconic Ferries of Penang – what a disgrace!
Cut cost solutions from Transport Minister Wee K S? Omega would agree.
Umno-MCA to remove the ferry icon from Penang, replaced with Vietnamese catamaran? What a joke!
Can train the affected fishermen to operate Vietnam catamarans? Wee Ka Siong should follow up on this.
… buy Viet built ship? Viet built ship shows MCA transport trust Viet who were fighting against USA why Malaysia is enjoying peace and many many Malaysian plans. What happen to all those Malaysian Plans? Cant built ships? Why not sub it to Fishermen of TT. they can built sampans and linked together like catamarans
A1 == PENANG FISHERMEN BECOME SEAFARERS UNDER NEW TRAINING SCHEME by Rachel Yeoh / 10 Jun 2022 7:00AM https://www.thevibes.com/articles/news/62940/penangs-fishermen-become-seafarers-under-new-training-scheme ======== ” Throughout my career, I’ve never seen a state government or developer sponsor the education of fishermen to generate the economy of the community. ” We, Penang Rakyat are just as surprised at this statement. In the many years that some of us been around, we were under the impression that it was the Duty, Moral Obligation and Responsibility of the state government to look into the general welfare of Penangites which includes the fishing community. They too do vote right.… Read more »
Look after welfare and not LIVELIHOOD What about becah riders? Many are around and some younger than Alpha and Omega. What kind of friends or mates? Leaving and abandoing the riders?
The course is not conducted by State but by your MCA -BN Marine Department a federal agency. With this cert, one can be a sea taxi driver just like RMIV. The State and Developer those affected to RETRAIN NEW SKILLS to cari makan. It is still the federal gomen like like 9 to 12 yeaRS free education by federal
We as citizens have moral obligation to improve ourselves with new skills in order to earn higher wages. Also must have moral obligation not to occupy land belonging to others and demand compensation.
You are right. Malaysians have been fed with an opium called Subsidi by BN. So addicted that they forgot about productivity, efficency and value add. Today BN is running out of money to continue subsidy for M40. The withdrawal symptoms will emerge among M40 living in cities finding difficult to cope with escalating cost of living. They will have to pay more debt interests should Bank Negara increase OPR (no choice) to protect Ringgit.
The situation would have not have been so unreasonable if the aid (called subsidies or whatever) had been distributed according to need, while pushing the latter to improve themselves. In Bolehland, such a push is taboo unless it is a money-making scam. E.g., following up on the root causes of high fertility, low literacy and low earnings.
B40 in the cities must practise family planning to maintain, if not improve present quality of life. If your income is not improving, additional new birth will add strain to the household finance. Do not burden the society with neglected children pursuing lajak culture.
I read this blog because the comments of readers are very interesting, not because of the topic raised by the blog master.
The blog master made little effort to write things that stimulate thinking. I somehow feel that he made use of his readers’ comments to attract audience like me. In other words. he could have made lots of money this way via the writings of his readers!
Actually, the cost of maintaining this blog is more than what I am generating from it at this point, but that is just secondary as I see it as a public service.
Why don’t you allow advertising on your blog to generate income, so long as you do not allow the annoying pop-up advertisement?
Thanks for the suggestion. Just that some of the ads might not be compatible with the thrust of this blog, eg high-end property development, fossil fuel vehicles…
Surely you can find advertisers that are compatible with your blog mission statement.
Many of the ads (and their links) are scams, or obsene.
Anil can feature more Penang food (popular with readers seeking food reviews) with links to the FB or website of the food establishments, then earn some fees in the process.
Thanks for the suggestion, Brocky. I’ll think about it. Maybe one day when I am really ‘pokai’. 🙂
A2 == If the state government has sponsored to educate the fishing community to further their knowledge on fishing or sea related matters, that is their Duty, Moral Obligation and Responsibility to do so. Nothing to be surprised about. As for the developer, it is simply for their business benefit. No business organization will want to spend money and do it for free if its not beneficial to their business. If these 2 entities ( state n developer ) were not involved in the Penang South Islands (PSI) project would they have come forward to sponsor such a scheme ? Cont.… Read more »
Nine fishermen have completed a seafarer’s course under a social impact management plan scheme organised by the Penang government and the developer of the Penang South Islands (PSI) project.
The fishermen are now qualified to pilot passenger boats and ferry up to 12 passengers at any one time.
https://www.thevibes.com/articles/news/62940/penangs-fishermen-become-seafarers-under-new-training-scheme
We need more publicity for such courses.
Since Wee Ka Siong has proposed water taxi for Penang, he should encourage affected fishermen to switch line to become water taxi operators? Training can be provided.
why not? Developer can have tour boat or sunset cruise around the reclaimed land. They need boat drivers and you want to use sampan potong like famous Ipoh kereta potong to go around the town?
Omega man, why dont you tell your MCA BN gomen to keep off the development of KL Kampong Baru? It is only the Kampong inside the City. Why upset their way of life? With high living cost, it is only place to have Chip chip housing, lay back and easy going life within the city. Dont change the way of life too.
stop plundering the sea, commercial fish farming is the way to go. Fishermen don’t own the sea and its shore. Majority want development, that is democracy so fishermen should give way..
Are these genuine fishermen contributing to food sustainability or merely fishing enthusiasts doing it for leisure and some pocket money? Must check their validity as far as legal ownership ifcyhe seashore.
I think it’s time to think about value add. How much could these small time fishing enthusiasts contribute to our economy? Commercial fish farming with technology is the way to go to raise the livelihoods of the subsequent generations, that could also work in the downstream fish processing factories.
Ask yourself today you will still take trishaw instead of GRAB? Must move on with time else we will lag behind Vietnam and Cambodia in the near future!

Its the State Government’s Duty, Moral Obligation and Responsibility to look into the general welfare and needs of the Penang Rakyat. They were not elected make ‘business type deals’ with the Rakyat. Has the State Government has got its objectives and priorities wrong then?
They have been here as State Government for 15 years. By now they should know what is their Duty, Moral Obligation and Responsibility and towards whom. We Penangites elected them, didn’t we? And we Penangites includes the Fishing Community who are part and parcel of the Penang Rakyat.
