Berjaya-owned Sun spotlights sports betting

Of late, the Berjaya-owned Sun newspaper has been highlighting the issue of sports betting and illegal betting syndicates. It’s news coverage, however, should be seen in the light of who owns the free tabloid.

On 15 June, the paper front-paged Mahathir’s dismissal of opposition protests on the issue with the headline “It’s all politics”.

The following day, the paper wheeled out ex-Magnum director and former Anwar ally S Nallukarupan with the headline “Anwar’s ploy”. Nalla lashed out at Anwar, saying “the issue has been manipulated by PKR for political mileage”. Keshwinder’s defection was sidelined to the left-hand column of the front-page.

Today’s Sun frontpages the arrests of 10 people for running illegal online betting on World Cup football matches.

The Sun is published by Berjaya Media Berhad, which is owned by Vincent Tan/Berjaya.

On April 1, Vincent Tan handed over the reins of Berjaya Media to his son Robin, who took over as Chairman and Director.

Vincent Tan’s direct (40 per cent) and indirect holding (30 per cent) in Berjaya Media stood at 70 per cent as of 4 May.

Both father and son were shareholders of Ascot, until Berjaya Corp announced a move to acquire Vincent’s 70 per cent stake. Ascot was in the news lately after Berjaya announced that the Finance Ministry had approved a sports betting licence subject to terms and condition – though the government later denied the licence had been issued.

Hi people of all races and religions, GAMBLING IS BAD AND IT IS A VICE, go to work in order to earn money

Hi people of all races and religions, supporters of all political parties, GAMBLING IS BAD AND IT IS A VICE, legallised/politicised or not. All decent parents and good teachers of all schools and religions would advise their children, students and followers to stay away from gambling, as well as other vices. Indeed, no one can stop you from indulging in vices. It is your personal choice and you are responsible for your own’s and, perhaps, also your family’s well-being. Having said that, a vice is a vice. It requires a wise mind and a strong will to resist the temptation… Read more »

The Sun is a free daily. You have the right not to read it. Your article is bias as well – isn’t it. We should have supported the sports betting and I could have made some money. Portugal 7 Korea 0. Just imagine. (Or did it turned 8-0)

Remember, the list of thrash papers include the Malay Mail. Ask around, there is No direction and “headless”. Yet, someone special is hired and paid handsomely. For what? Your guess is as good as mine!
From reading it, it is obvious ordinary stories painting rosy pictures of government is the order of the day, while highlighting the bad side of the opposition is news of the day. Hello, readers are shortchanged
Can’t believe its investors are this naive.

I think betting on sports or gambling is a personal choice. Licensed or not – those who gamble will continue to do so. For the govt to license sports betting there are always people who are for and against it. But if the govt is serious about issuing the license then it should issue it to a govt-owned company. Since the govt are already collecting sin taxes – why not go all the way? Own the betting company or companies and keep all the profits and taxes at the same time. Why give this privileged license to any individual? Why… Read more »

(Someone has allegedly) been harassing … editors (of a certain paper) non stop into running stories that support sports gambling, including playing on the front page. Stories that condemn gambling and sports betting not allowed to print. He (allegedly) issued threats against paper if it fails to do its bidding. Many fed up but money talk$.

Even the Umno cronies are multi-racial just pick any Krishnan, Tan, Ali, Baba as front runner so any MCA MIC Gerakan even all Pakatan find it hard to say any race is left behind. This how M making a spoof out of multi-racial Malaysia. Cunning… isn’t he. Now M said the Malays are under attack and become new minority soon, but actually replace the ‘Malay’ word as ‘Umno’ then it is clearly it is Umno under attack while majority Malays are smart enough to make Umno slowly the new minority instead. So folks, any posting by M that mention the… Read more »

Dear Anil,
What are you trying to insinuate?
It’s in All the other Daily’s as well.
Why specify Only the Sun?
Sports betting should be Legalised and Controlled like All Developed Countries!!!
Singapore is a very good example, since Malaysians like you always like to compare!!!
