A huge explosion has hit a nuclear power plant in Japan after yesterday’s massive quake sparking fears of a meltdown. Now, do we really want to opt for nuclear energy in Malaysia?
The plant lies in Fukishima, only 250km northeast of Tokyo. Japanese officials fear a meltdown at one of the plant’s reactors after radioactive material was detected outside it, reports the BBC. The evacuation zone has now been extended from 12km to 20km.
I shudder to think about what could happen and pray that no major leaks will occur.
Time to shelve Malaysia’s own very expensive plans for nuclear energy, don’t you think?

By which message do you feel more reassured and confident that your government is working for you?
Nuclear is ‘too big to fail’. I expect our government (OK, your – I’m not even a 2nd class citizen) will continue the ‘wait and see’ line and not tolerate any discussion on this topic at all. Al Jazeera have a 25-minute programme on Japan up at the moment in which the first expert to speak is one of TEPCO’s engineers who is translated as saying

Japan and US reactrs were built in an era where 8+ scale richter earthquakes are rare and even unheard of except in old records. The Japanese Fuku reactors are second generation reactors.
Malaysia could implement nuke reactors if and only if they employ the latest tech and ensure thet the facility is reinfrced like mad to withstand all the catastophes of the world.
Nuclear reactors are simple, it is getting the enriched fuel and disposing the waste products which are a concern.I am for nuclear energy if we make all the precautions.
Given our famed service-maintenance mentality, you think it is trustworthily-safe to proceed nuclear energy?
Given a choice between charcoal and nuclear, I rather choose the charcoal. At least I can sleep soundly. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz…
Again, I tak boleh tahan with your old person minded statement.
Charcoal ???
Please lah, you day and night cries for green energy, green this and that, now you pick charcoal ???
Gerakan K, Wait till Armageddon for the worst case scenario. You will not survive without the conveniences of modern lifestyle. Just look at the earthquake / tsunami hit Japanese now struggling to survive even with basic or megre conveniences. No electricity, no drinking water, no fast food, no sushi, no wifi, no mobile calls. Just trap in the midst of depressing debris. I bet you will not even walk a mile thro’ those dangerous debris to get help. At the very least, you can only pray for divine intervention. The Penans and Orang Asli for the time being will still… Read more »
I would like to quote this (if I may):
“Do we really want to mess with something so dangerous?
With a nuclear reactor and radiation leaks, a mistake need only happen once and we are screwed.
The coast of a state may be contaminated with radiation for a very long time.
These disasters are “one time only” events – they just need to happen once.
There is NO second chance.
So please cancel this nuclear reactor idea.”

Wahhh! this Umno … Gerakan K also ada rumah2 in Selangor ar?…boy, must have done well (and) pleased his political masters..at least, this bloke is good at something!
Make hay while the sunshine,… because, after every GE you will have lesser pastures and need to sniff harder!!
U know, when I scour through the Penang Street food articles, my dear Gerakan K never once recommend any Penang food…. which makes me more and more convince that he is No Penangite, and just masuk masuk buat kacau here only lahhhh.
R u trying to stoke … Penangites so as to scare off my other brothers in seeking truth of democracy, dear Gerakan?
Makan also want to argue ar ???
Makan also want to do political spins ???
Don’t copy Taiwan political style where hawkers refuse to sell food to political rivals. That is reported in TVBS news.
Don’t mix politics in foods and sports. That is my principle.
Don’t worry friend, you have the chance to attend my ceramah in next GE during campainging time. Tell me your nickname then at the ceramah and I will show my mycard to you. My mycard addrees is in Penang.
To Yang, you too will be invited.
Our excess capacity is only 60%. Let us go for a world record. Nuclear plants are now going cheap. “Buy 2 1 free”!
We have corruption, rent seeking, politicking, poor planning, shoddy workmanship, poor maintenance culture, in-transparency, non-accountabilty and poor ER in Msia. Those are worst than an earthquake or tsunami. It will be a disaster even before the nuclear power project get off the drawing board.
I believe that’s those were the questions that Anil is worried about, should we proceed to building the nuclear plant… which Gerakan K thinks it’s of no issue…. b’cos Msia Boleh…
Thanks to the “foresight” of our CM, we in Sarawak, with our many mega dams, will not need to have the proposed nuclear power plant in our State. You, Malayans, can have it…lock, stock and barrel.
…UMNO is thinking of having a nuclear plant, if we had one and faced the same situation, I hate to imagine what will happen….especially if managed and operated by UMNO (personnel)!
Malaysia needs not an earthquake to cause a mishap…can you trust (them) running a nuclear plant.
Gerakan K why are you feeling so agitated?…
Please build the nuclear plant at Putra Jaya, so that it could be closely monitored by our efficient government service!
Some blokes will never learn from others’ mistakes even if it means losing your parents, friends, neighbours and homes. We are sitting next to the volcanic explosion/earthquake prone region (The Andamans and Acheh in Sumatra, Indonesia) and have recently experience the horrors of Tsunami 2004. What will actually change some of our nin·com·poop minds from opting nuclear plants in the name of economy of scale to the detriments or even plausible extinction of humankind?
Where there is a gravy train coming, who cares not to walk across the track?
I would still say go for the nuclear plant. Make sure it is placed in Malaya or better still at Putrajaya.
Next to Gerakan K’s house.
Nuclear plants in Penang ??? No problem.
By the way, I also got house & shops in Selangor. Pakatan states also. How ???
Solution: Wait until next GE when BN sweep clean all states.
Aiyah. We just apply to move your house and shops brick by brick out to a BN state, then build the plant lah.
Hi Gerakan K.
We shouldn’t boast we got this and that. One fine day, God may decide to take these away from us. Why not sell one of your houses for humanitarian purpose to help the Sendai tsunami victims?
Where do you think my money for wii, ps3, sony lcd, and other made in Japan (sharp, sony, toshiba, etc) appliances gone to ???
Of couse to the Japan. I have supported the Japan, Japanese people and firms GOOD enough.
Now, I’m looking to import a cheap and slightly damaged Japanese car due to the tsunami.
I heard that Toyota car got huge discount very soon.
Taking advantage of other’s misfortune!
And equating economics with humanitarian as trade off like I don’t owe you, you don’t owe me?
Gosh! What kind of thinking or heart is that?
This may not be a good idea as there are many good, caring neighbors around him.
A feasiblility-studied one could be one of the isolated Pacific islands with one standing coconut tree where Gerakan K can be commissioned as nuclear plant 24-hr Inspector with an insurance policy to cover nuclear emission fallout (the first in the world for private cover). And please don’t forget the e-games you normally can’t find on such beautiful eco-islands.
Surely the most urgent matter for the Malaysian government to attend to domestically is to give us some idea how safe we are from fallout from a Japanese incident here. In 2006, 20 years after Chernobyl, nearly 400 UK farms were still shut as a result of radioactive fallout:
http://www.greens-efa.org/cms/topics/dokbin/118/118559.torch_executive_summary@en.pdf
I think the government needs to get its meteorologists to do some calculations and let us know as soon as possible what the chances are of wind-dispersed fallout coming here.
I see Chin has released an official statement on this very topic:
Malaysia is free from earth quake. So what is the debate or comparison point ???
It’s not free from corruption and shoddy workmanship. That’s the comparison point.
Mega projects like KLCC, KL Tower, etc remain intact until today. So, another mega project like nuclear power plant will be the same.
p/s: Comment rating system has oppress the free speech principles. By the time I made this reply, there are 11 zombies thumbed down my comment. Well done anilnetto.com !!!
What oppression? You’re still commenting, aren’t you?
Doesn’t mean people will agree with you.
The KPI for you: poor.
GK,
Yoy are inane or forgetful. The stadium in Trengganu collapse in just about 1 year. Do you want more example
When talking about corruption, what do you think about following news:
MBPJ forks out RM210,000 for guard post (http://malaysia-today.net/mtcolumns/newscommentaries/38710-mbpj-forks-out-rm210000-for-guard-post)
Anilnetto.com censored it outright. Then what is your opinion Andrew I ???
Value for money isn’t it ??? Well done Pakatan, you are the champion !!!
It was totally off-topic earlier. Off-topic comments are usually deleted.
Stupid people should be deleted as well.
Anil statement: Off-topic comments are usually deleted.
My observation is any off-topic comments that are praising Pakatan are never deleted.
And any off-topic comments condemning BN is most welcome and fully supported with thumb ups !!!
anilnetto.com is pr pr tool
1. Malaysian never thought that the country will be hit by tsunami and its after effect. It did right? 2. The BN govt never thought Selangor Perak Penang Kedah can slip out of their fingers. These states did right? 3. Those people who did Altan-beauty n TBH in would not have thought the Malaysian Public has sustained outrage. The Malaysia Public are still indignant about it right? Gerakan-K, let me tell you the nuclear radioactive emissions are airborne, landseeping and waterborne. Imported Food, air travels, water flow make the whole wide world into a village. You and conies will also… Read more »
No, lah. The figures are far too small when compared to PKFZ.
Oh I see, any *well-done-Pakatan* project that is smaller than PKFZ is OK.
Now I know the parameter of standard of Pakatan.
Well done Pakatan !!!
Plus no member of one party can “con” another member from another party in the same coalition.
I really cannot understand this Anil! What is it got to do with Malaysia? Something happen elsewhere and is not relevant to Malaysia is an issue. He must have a lot of free time to think something like this!
The vast scale of impact on people occurred despite decades of preparation. That goverment was even ultracautious (at the risk of being proven wrong and looking foolish) over the Y2K threat.
Connct the dots. Is your goverment prepared for major disasters? Does it have a budget, administration, facilites, trained personnel and an related programme of education? What did you see during the major Johor floods around 2006? … Do you know that your government is there to serve you and not for you to bow down to your public servants? Do you have a sense of self-respect?
sorry to break your myth, but there has been earthquakes in Malaysia – at Bukit Tinggi, next to Genting Highlands – there has been many over the years, except it’s on a lower ritcher scale….
Please cite your source ???
Is that from Harakah ??? Suara Keadilan ??? Or the press with a red rocket ???
No wonder, we got earthquakes.

TQ Sean….
But none of these are from from Harakah, Suara Keadilan or the press with a red rocket – this is so wrong…. Gerakan K won’t be able to comprehend these FACTS…. that there ARE a few “fault lines” in Msia…
Thank you for taking the trouble to educate our friend here, Sean.
Trust me, it’s going to be a wasted effort.
I think you should do some research on the two famous nuclear reactors incident before you talk so much:
– Three Mile Island reactor in the United States and
– Chernobyl reactor in the former Soviet Union
There was no earthquakes at these two reactors….
I think you should talk a cold bath and re-read the acticle before jump to opposition/rocket mode.
This article implied that *earthquake* is the threat to nuclear power plant. And the example is in the Japan now.
and? we DO have earthquakes….
By the way, Chernobyl mishap is caused by *technical design* problems.
Duh who cares if its natural or man-made error that create disaster? The impact is still all types of cancer! Nuclear accident/incident will not identify ‘technical or natural’ disaster.. not like your Tuan who ask everybody to tick Muslim/Non Muslim.
Wake up dont be in a stupor!
so, you’re saying that accidents won’t happen in Msia?
Let me help you along with your research: The Three Mile Island began with the failure of a valve controlling the coolant flow into the reactor. Many reasons were stated for the accident, of which were two main ones i.e. 1. a simple human error and 2. failure of a rather minor valve in the reactor, plus a lot of human confusion during the whole period of uncertainty. As for the cause for the Chernobyl accident was that on that fateful day – normal reactor operations were suspended, due to a scheduled experiment in progress. Normal safety guidelines were disregarded, and… Read more »
