Massive blast at Japan nuclear plant

A huge explosion has hit a nuclear power plant in Japan after yesterday’s massive quake sparking fears of a meltdown. Now, do we really want to opt for nuclear energy in Malaysia?

The plant lies in Fukishima, only 250km northeast of Tokyo. Japanese officials fear a meltdown at one of the plant’s reactors after radioactive material was detected outside it, reports the BBC. The evacuation zone has now been extended from 12km to 20km.

I shudder to think about what could happen and pray that no major leaks will occur.

Time to shelve Malaysia’s own very expensive plans for nuclear energy, don’t you think?

Nuclear is ‘too big to fail’. I expect our government (OK, your – I’m not even a 2nd class citizen) will continue the ‘wait and see’ line and not tolerate any discussion on this topic at all. Al Jazeera have a 25-minute programme on Japan up at the moment in which the first expert to speak is one of TEPCO’s engineers who is translated as saying

We have confirmed that the explosion … did not take place within the reactor’s container. The blast occurred because the building’s walls fell down.

Japan and US reactrs were built in an era where 8+ scale richter earthquakes are rare and even unheard of except in old records. The Japanese Fuku reactors are second generation reactors.

Malaysia could implement nuke reactors if and only if they employ the latest tech and ensure thet the facility is reinfrced like mad to withstand all the catastophes of the world.

Nuclear reactors are simple, it is getting the enriched fuel and disposing the waste products which are a concern.I am for nuclear energy if we make all the precautions.

Gerakan K, Wait till Armageddon for the worst case scenario. You will not survive without the conveniences of modern lifestyle. Just look at the earthquake / tsunami hit Japanese now struggling to survive even with basic or megre conveniences. No electricity, no drinking water, no fast food, no sushi, no wifi, no mobile calls. Just trap in the midst of depressing debris. I bet you will not even walk a mile thro’ those dangerous debris to get help. At the very least, you can only pray for divine intervention. I would like to quote this (if I may):

“Do we really want to mess with something so dangerous?

With a nuclear reactor and radiation leaks, a mistake need only happen once and we are screwed.

The coast of a state may be contaminated with radiation for a very long time.

These disasters are “one time only” events – they just need to happen once.

There is NO second chance.

So please cancel this nuclear reactor idea.”

We have corruption, rent seeking, politicking, poor planning, shoddy workmanship, poor maintenance culture, in-transparency, non-accountabilty and poor ER in Msia. Those are worst than an earthquake or tsunami. It will be a disaster even before the nuclear power project get off the drawing board.

We are sitting next to the volcanic explosion/earthquake prone region (The Andamans and Acheh in Sumatra, Indonesia) and have recently experience the horrors of Tsunami 2004. What will actually change some of our nin·com·poop minds from opting nuclear plants in the name of economy of scale to the detriments or even plausible extinction of humankind?

A feasiblility-studied one could be one of the isolated Pacific islands with one standing coconut tree where Gerakan K can be commissioned as nuclear plant 24-hr Inspector with an insurance policy to cover nuclear emission fallout (the first in the world for private cover). And please don’t forget the e-games you normally can’t find on such beautiful eco-islands.

Surely the most urgent matter for the Malaysian government to attend to domestically is to give us some idea how safe we are from fallout from a Japanese incident here. In 2006, 20 years after Chernobyl, nearly 400 UK farms were still shut as a result of radioactive fallout:

http://www.greens-efa.org/cms/topics/dokbin/118/118559.torch_executive_summary@en.pdf

I think the government needs to get its meteorologists to do some calculations and let us know as soon as possible what the chances are of wind-dispersed fallout coming here.

I see Chin has released an official statement on this very topic:

STFU

See: http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/malaysia/article/chin-atomic-agency-to-explain-japan-radiation-leak/

I hope someone will talk to the incompetent minister’s boss in parliament on Monday and ask for something a bit more reassuring from the government’s meteorology department.
Prevailing winds from Japan are strongly towards the US (and away from us) as far as I know, and this seems to support that:
http://www.stormsurfing.com/cgi/display_alt.cgi?a=npac_250

The one sure-fire way to curb speculation is with better quality information. I hope something (other than “stfu”) is forthcoming.

The vast scale of impact on people occurred despite decades of preparation. That goverment was even ultracautious (at the risk of being proven wrong and looking foolish) over the Y2K threat.

Connct the dots. Is your goverment prepared for major disasters? Does it have a budget, administration, facilites, trained personnel and an related programme of education? What did you see during the major Johor floods around 2006? … Do you know that your government is there to serve you and not for you to bow down to your public servants? Do you have a sense of self-respect?

There was no earthquakes at these two reactors….

Let me help you along with your research: The Three Mile Island began with the failure of a valve controlling the coolant flow into the reactor. Many reasons were stated for the accident, of which were two main ones i.e. 1. a simple human error and 2. failure of a rather minor valve in the reactor, plus a lot of human confusion during the whole period of uncertainty. As for the cause for the Chernobyl accident was that on that fateful day – normal reactor operations were suspended, due to a scheduled experiment in progress. Normal safety guidelines were disregarded, and… Read more »
