The #PenangTolakTambak (Penang Rejects Reclamation) campaign received a major boost today when Permatang Pauh MP Nurul Izzah came out with a strong commentary calling for the cancellation of the ecologically damaging Penang South Reclamation mega-project.

The project aims to create three artificial islands spanning 4,500 acres that will destroy prime fishing waters.

Read her thoughtful commentary “Cancel the Penang South Reclamation project” in both Malay and English.

Well done, Nurul Izzah!

Zakaria Ismail is a director of the southern division of the Penang Fishermen’s Association (PNPP). He is also deputy head of the Sungai Batu Fishermen’s Unit – File photo

Zakaria Ismail of the Sungai Batu fishing unit at ground zero was in high spirits upon hearing the news: “Kita bertambah kuat. Lawan sampai menang” (We’re growing stronger. We’ll struggle on until we win).

If Penang government needs 3 artificial islands to spur “development” like Singapore, why there is no foresight to do so with plenty of lands on mainland??? What sort of “development” there that can prevent brain drain to so called greener pastures like the typical destination of Singapore? Local State Government still don’t have the guts to call shots but still dependent on Federal eg MITI on investment approvals. A simple call to shut down FMCO still subject Federal decision unlike Sarawak State. Be realistic. Bayan Lepas FTZ has yet to transform into IR4.0 landscape. Many still foreign labour dependent SME… Read more »

You will be the first to migrate to the hinterland? Ask Pengland forum. How many live in seberang? When they talk about Pengland, it si about the island not the congo of pengland. Even our Tunlang. He raised in heritage wong fei hoong style shop house but support the developers buying a condo. He loves the Belum Valley but buy a 4 wheel drive and change the tires when he drives to seberang. So much for one burning so much fossil fuel. Pengland is the Penang Island, not BM, BW just like when one said he is from Malaysia. One… Read more »

3 islands according to Penang Government Island A : Extension of FTZ Island B : Playground for City Planners n Architects for green space best designs Island C: mixed developments Questions: Island A : what kind of FDI ? High end investment eg nanometer electronics may need high energy / clean water supply can government provide further $ investment for that? FTZ already extended to Batu Kawan n you can see the development there. Island B: Basically commercial projects disguised as playgrounds where eg one goes leisure n pays for premium drinks/meals. Can witness that once Gurney Wharf is opened… Read more »

In Batu Kawan is like AA cattle class budget airline. Work work work and Uncle Sam thinks the gloves are like worse than sweat shop. Where do they relax after a hard day night working like a dog as sung by beetles? So the Management and Technical people have to travel overseas crossing the sea to work and go home everyday. You want them to burn more fuel and shorten the irreversible climate change? What does Sink apor has? Same as Bei jing? Millions go there to see the Grand Place, Love Bird nest Stadium, Summer Palace. Bell Tower, Great… Read more »

If gomen do on the mainland, the the damage will be transferred to the mainland. Look, jungles are cut down for palm oil, Yet no one roar to help the big cats. How many Malayan tigers and elephants? Even the orang hutan cannot be like tarzan swing from trees to trees. Land is only 1/4 of earth surface and 3/4 is sea. Yet people are cutting jungles on 1/4 earth surface. People are just adding a dot in the ocean to make land. Land is oredi limited and yet no one bising when jungles are cleared for palm oil. Ask… Read more »

No more jungles to hide. So they evolved and hide among the sawit. They evolved into small cats. They are domesticated and they meow instead of roar and get feed rather than to hunt. What to hunt?

MP Nurul not aligned to CM Chow’s 2030 Vision for Penang?

CM Chow should now put more immediate focus on tackling economic hardship during Covid19 pandemic with many with hungry tummies waiting for food supply daily at Komtar Bus Hub and Pitt Street.

You mean any clearing carried out on land does not affect the biodiversity? Even building a road, rail or canal affect the funa and flora and EIA has to be carried out

Among these six anti-PSR groups mentioned above, there are those formed by the same individuals. For instance, Meenakshi Raman is the president of Sahabat Alam Malaysia, the chairperson of Tanjung Bungah Residents Association, member of Penang Forum, and legal adviser to Consumers’ Association of Penang.

This is one person lobbying under four different groups, giving the public a false impression of widespread support.

This is just one of many tactics taken by these individuals to mislead the public? Whether or not this is ethical, we leave it to the public to decide.

If certain sectors of the economy can continue under a lockdown, why insist on individual permits for them – from a central source? Why do some policy makers keep shooting from the hip, and why do their subordinates not guide them with practical advice? Why the dogged insistence on not learning from other countries? Just notifying local governments of the list of other (prohibited) sectors should be enough, for enforcement. This is another case of needless bottleneck, laughable if it were not so scary.

So the question to CM Chow is what kind of education young Penangites should pursue now to equip them well as tequired by those foreign bosses? Tuition centres must now be aligned to Penang 2030 vision or blueprints to coach young minds to be ready for future offers at 3 new islands.
