Just spotted this on Youtube; it could explain some of the disappointment among the villagers, who desperately wanted to preserve their settlement.
This video is dated January 2009 whereas the kampung had already been transferred to the Koperasi on 27 March 2008. Mind you, the public pledges in the video were made after the Court of Appeal had declared that the villagers had no locus standi.

How much I wish I am the squatter of Kg Buah Pala. The benefit that most Penang people envy and can get even working for their entire life. How many people can afford a terrace house in Penang?

Jika Mahkamah Tinggi kata sah dan ia boleh diketepikan oleh Mahkamah Rayuan sebagai tidak sah. Dan Mahkamah Persekutuan pula boleh ketepikan keputusan Mahkamah Rayuan dengan sah. Anil, Ex Penang Govt also promised to take care of Penangites in several General Elections, ensure rakyat hidup sejahtera dll. But They are the one who passed the repeal of Rent-Controlled Act that cause thousands of families lost their home. Listen! in Parliament. Actually, the state government should have done the following when they found themselves checkmated by the courts decision. Since the BN crony Cooperative and Developer got the land dirt cheap and stand to make probably 1000 fold profits in the venture they should be made to pay for the creation of an Indian Cultural village after a suitable place has been found and designated by the state government. Some even kenna compensation with nothing. The federal court has ruled that these villagers are squarters. I believe it’s based upon these villagers paying TOL fees to state government. The truth is, whether the KBP residents voted for Barisan or Dap, the outcome of their faith is still the same. They have to vacate their houses because they have no legal right to occupy the land. To vote in a government to fix what is wrong from the beginning is wrong in principle. Further more, I believe when Pakatan made the promises, they have no idea how advance the deal had been strucked between the previous goverment and the developer.
