This short highway cost several hundred million ringgit for the city council to build. That’s comparable to the annual income of the Penang Island City Council.
I had never seen people celebrating the opening of a highway before. What’s with that?
Actually, in this era of climate change, spending so much on a new highway – hundreds of millions of ringgit for a short stretch – should be seen as a failure in planning for sustainable mobility. “Highest highway” indeed!
If a short downpour can cause minor havoc on this highway, what will happen when we see the Full Monty – a prolonged thunderstorm? Some say fallen leaves clogged the water outlets, but if simple maintenance work could not anticipate that, it doesn’t really inspire confidence.
I watched a video clip of a drive along this highway and was appalled to see the massive scarring of the hill slopes, large parts of which were plastered with concrete.
Let’s not forget the migrant workers who perished during a landslide in the vicinity during highway construction a few years ago.
