MCA spin on the ISA

MCA Wanita Chief Chew Mei Fun is trying to spin what the public really feels about the ISA. “Everybody is actually looking forward to a review of the ISA,” she says.

Really? Everybody? Most people I know want the ISA repealed not “reviewed”.

Chew seems to be against detention without trial, which is good. So why can’t she come out and demand the outright abolition of the ISA? Okay, she wants the ISA to be renamed Anti-Terrorism Act. But does she think this will stop abuse of power? Remember 2001, when 10 reformasi activists were detained for suspected terror activities – only to be released much later? Remember the Hindraf Five? Remember all those languishing in Kamunting?

Out with this obnoxious law!

This excerpt from The Star:

JOHOR BARU: A review of the Internal Security Act (ISA) should be comprehensive and address terrorism specifically to prevent abuses in interpretation.

MCA Wanita chief Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun suggested the ISA be renamed the Anti-Terrorism Act so there was no room for abuse.

Saying the public welcomed the review by the Home Ministry and the Law Reform Committee, she added that such an act should only be geared towards fighting terrorism.

This should not be seen as a “re-branding exercise” but as a move to make the law more precise, she said.

“Everybody is actually looking forward to a review of the ISA and what is most important is the voice of the people,” she said, adding that the laws reviewed should reflect Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s “1Malaysia” vision.

She added the Law Reform Committee should also seriously consider removing provisions for detention without trial, so that those detained under any act or law would have the chance to defend themselves in court.

First abolish or repeal the ISA unconditionally.

If the government sees the necessity of an anti-terrorism law, she may introduce the bill in parliament and have that debated.
However, this is a separate topic.

In this first place, Chew Mei Fun is a back door listed deputy minister. She was thrown out in the last election. Therefore she has no credibility to speak on behalf of anybody.

BETTER TO ABOLISH ALL THESE DRACONIAN ACTS. IT SERVES ONLY ONE PURPOSE. PROTECT THE BN PEOPLE AND THEIR CRONIES. IF THE DRACONIAN ACTS ARE NOT ABOLISHED, COME GE13, THE RAKYAT OF MALAYSIA WILL ABOLISH UNMO, MCA. MIC, PPP, GERAKAN AND ALL THE OTHER COMPONENT PARTIES IN BN. TO THE PAKATAN RAKYAT PEOPLES’ REPRESENTATIVE. WAKE UP AND WORK FOR THE RAKYAT WHO HAVE VOTED YOU INTO POWER

Hi MCA wanita chief. You want the ISA to be renamed Anti-Terrorism Act. Have you elaborated the difference between the ISA and the Anti-Terrorism Act? Without that what difference does it make? The contents are the same. Why don’t you just say that you want the ISA to remain. SIMPLE O. K.? Leaders from BN component parties most of them when asked to comment/speak up, most of the time we don’t know what they were talking about. e.g Quote from the Malaysiakini (4-5-09) whether UMNO is participating in the Penanti by-election, replied by Muhyiddin. ” We did not discuss about… Read more »

Hi anil,

To me whether the ISA is to be reviewed or abolished is not important I think the people who run the goverment needs to be review.
If you are given a gun, and is for your protection purpose but you chooses trigger happy, is the gun or the person who uses it is wrong. So what do you think?
I would say don’t change the gun but the person who used it.

Chew MF, you are a disgrace. Have you ever considered being detained in any lock-up room without given the chance to go to court and ask for you freedom? Have you ever been forcefully deprived of sleep over a few days, coerced, threatened, beaten, marred and scarred psychologically, and stripped naked for no good reason?

This is very wrong. The ISA is called an Internal Security Act. It provides the Police force or the Minister of Home Affairs to detain people or organizations that have a risk profile which is substantial to put our country’s security in jeopardy.

The essence of ISA should not be totally shelved but continued under a new Bill.

ISA will be abolished, as you wish but the essence of security of the country should be at our minds and it will be drafted in the new Bill.

Chow Bee Hoon, I say abolish ISA and all irrelevant acts. We are not living in the Stone Age. I dare you to agree with me. But if you agree with me, you are afraid to lose your back door listing job and then you are jobless. You had already lost 2 jobs since after 308 and another after our Uncle Lim Kit Siang advised you.

I don’t want a review. I want the ISA abolished. Chew Mei Fun, read my lips. It’s “ABOLISHED!”

And while you are at it, please also ABOLISH the OSA, the Printing and Printing Publications Act, the University and University Colleges Act, the Trade Union Act, the Police Act, the Sedition Act, the Societies Act, etc. And you can also abolish the MCA and the BN as well in the process because come 2013, we shall do it all for you.!
