Aliran launches online petition calling for repeal of Sedition Act

Social reform group Aliran has launched an online petition calling for the repeal of the Sedition Act.

Excerpt from the petition:

Aliran calls for the immediate repeal of the Sedition Act which panders to the extremists and clearly lends itself to easy abuse by the authorities. Indeed, the Act was first introduced by the British colonial masters in 1948 to snuff out all forms of criticism of the British authorities. Now that we are independent and call ourselves a practising democracy, there is simply no place for this obnoxious and repressive Act which violates our freedom of expression and having an opinion.

You can find the online petition on the Aliran website.

If you believe in high income vision 2020, then why would Najib ironically introduce the rent-to-own low cost PR1MA? Rakyat still tak mampu even if BN has claimed that the mean household income is now RM5700 a month?

I have overlooked to mention that almost every rule and regulations in this country, if not all, are meant to restrict people in this country from protesting them. Just look at the repugnant Mahathir, the paid mouth piece of Umno, the taxi driver Abraham Ali and (certain pro) Umno samsengs these pugnacious Malay warriors and the numerous others. They (seem to be) immune to any punitive actions by the police, (few) are … even being investigated by the police. Clearly these are testimony of what I have to say that the sedition act is only meant for all the people… Read more »

“PasMa is very concerned with PR’s fate. If PR falls, we will return to the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s where only one party ruled and the people had no choice,” said the former Kedah PAS deputy commissioner.
“Politics can only be healthy if the rakyat have a choice, and those in power are aware that they can be removed from office by the people.”

someone in this blog says news media reporting is a responsible task. why governnent dont sue but use sedition acts against an online journalist? Are you going foot all the bills on behalf of rakyat win or lose? Instead, by using this law, scarce tactics against tax paymasters the rakyat.

cwf ; You see you are really stupid. People sue and they defend it in court. Govt charged and you defend it in court. Suing or charging is also like using scare tactic. Just like the … CAT who tried to sue Nas but chicken out. Just big mouth. Now he apologize to Sultan for submitting 1 name and blamed it on Anwar. Why did he not object. Is he afraid of Anwar or is he Anwar puppet.

Some believe that Mr Najib’s foot-dragging on repeal, as well as the sedition charges, are a response to pressure from the right wing of his own party—particularly from Mahathir Mohamad, a former prime minister who publicly withdrew his support for Mr Najib on August 18th, one day before the first sedition charge was filed against Mr Surendran. But, in pandering to the right, Mr Najib risks tarnishing his own reformist image. It is hard to be the face of progress and moderation while leading a government that seeks to jail its critics.

We r seeing redundant of staff at PM dept doing task other Ministry can do, for example Wee KS touches on Tv entertainment copyright issues which is the job Shaberry Cheek should pick up n respond ? Also Nancy Shukry doin Home Minister job comments on seditious act? How about that Paul not working to review Teoh Beng Hock case now justice must be served?

For all intent and purpose, any discussion of reform of this act is DEAD. His words clearly indicate, as far as subtance is concern, he already on the side of those against abolishing Sedition Act. From now on, its just pretending and excuses. No point talking, protesting, criticising about it with Najib or anyone else in UMNO/BN.

former deputy minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah noted that it was important to repeal the Sedition Act 1948, as the colonial-era law hinders the public from feeling safe to speak up when someone holding public office “crosses the line” or does an “unconstitutional” act.

“Because with the current Sedition Act, you may arrive at a situation where public intellectuals are resigned to the fact that no one can speak up, when no one can speak up, you unconsciously allow the space for someone else to rewrite the constitution through the backdoor,” he said.

Or unless you are like the universe in the nutshell, you would not be aware that without the Sedition Act or ISA , people within the establishment, the political scene or society within us (no discrimination to any whether Perkasa, PPS, DAP, BN, Pakatan, MCA, Gerakan etc or NGOs or even triads and gangster) it is or may be a favoured instrument for them to pursue their ideal, ambition without legitimacy or to free themselves from the crimes and disorder that they have committed. Example are triad leaders killing a witness to get scott free and with the ISA they… Read more »

Very good to have one size fit all isa and sedition to those, triads, samseng. Mafia, rob, illegal hawkering, selling illegal DVD, illegal parking anf in fact everything. Econ of scale and simplification as they all pose threats to society. Sharia laws can be put aside.

Unless you have been living in a bubble universe of unreality you would be aware that the Sedition Act(SA) is being used indiscriminately to silence any opposition. People within the establishment or their agents (and by that I mean hate groups like Perkosa, ISMA, Utusan Meloya and such) are free to spew hatred and bigoted comments without any repercussions.A civilized country does not need an archaic law such as the Sedition Act. There are enough established laws to deal with people who promote hatred and extremism. The problem is the selective prosecution (or should I say persecution) of people who… Read more »

Every law has its pro and con just as ISA and the Sedition Act.
If without the act would it not pander to the opposition and irresponsible people and clearly lends itself to abuse with them spewing and inciting racist, religious and extremist comments that may create a state of tension and disharmony.

What a waste of time and resources, this is to replace the ISA and without it how can they be charging so many people who are speaking against what the Umno schmucks are doing. The worse part is people like the repugnant … Mahathie, the former CJ, … plus so many others linked to Umno. These individuals can be so seditious yet no punitive actions are being taken by the police, I repeat nothing happens. All these will continue as long as the Umno schmucks are being kept as tenants in Putrajaya. Najib will remain dumb, as usual, as long… Read more »
