The failed US occupation of Iraq

The front page of today’s Sun shows George Bush ducking as an Iraqi journalist hurls a shoe at him.

That may be surprising if you are following the global television stations, which tell us that the situation in Iraq is improving for the occupying powers as the worst of the carnage since the Anglo-American invasion subsides.

Some 1.3 million people have perished in Iraq as a result of the invasion – so you can understand why George Bush is not the Iraqis’ most favourite person.

The lower level of carnage now does not translate to victory for the United States as this Counter Punch commentary reveals:

It’s All Spelled Out in Unpublicised Agreement
Total Defeat for U.S. in Iraq

By PATRICK COCKBURN

On November 27 the Iraqi parliament voted by a large majority in favor of a security agreement with the US under which the 150,000 American troops in Iraq will withdraw from cities, towns and villages by June 30, 2009 and from all of Iraq by December 31, 2011. The Iraqi government will take over military responsibility for the Green Zone in Baghdad, the heart of American power in Iraq, in a few weeks time. Private security companies will lose their legal immunity. US military operations and the arrest of Iraqis will only be carried out with Iraqi consent. There will be no US military bases left behind when the last US troops leave in three years time and the US military is banned in the interim from carrying out attacks on other countries from Iraq. Bush is anything except stupid and brainless, his family and former republican heavyweights’ oil businesses are bagging a life long oil exploration rights in Iraq at the expense of stupid Americans, he doesn’t spend a dollar, waste a child, or get to live a day in Hell where he created. On the contrary, he is a very cocky politician, able to persuade others to send their children to die for his political goal.

Stupid action by brainless president.
Why waste own country’s money unnecessarily, sacrificing own soldiers for nothing!
He should just mind his own business.

Talking about all these number of civilians death in Iraq is meaningless to republican party, for them, it is called “collateral damage” not human, children, or Iraqi. Majority of the world see Iraq as a hellhole now but republican see it as another source for their corporations oil supply apart from Saudi Arabia that can meet USA and the world needs.

Bush managed to kill as many Iraqi as possible in the shortest time he possibly can, compare to Saddam, he only took one tenth of the time needed to get the job done in relative to Saddam long reign of power in Iraq. No doubt he is extremely proud of his achievement, but Iraqis are just collateral damage to him to spread democracy. Both are dictator and mass murderers in the eye of Iraqi.

The main reason the US is in Iraq and Afghanistan is to steal the oil. A second reason is to destroy Sadam Hussein for Israel.

To say that 1.3 million people died in Iraq due to US occupation is a blatant lie. The figures are in dispute. The figures came out of an left-wing website. There have been criticisms that left-wing anti-war crowd fudged the figures. Its not 1. 2 million. Get your facts right! Due to the US troop surge, the figures of both Iraqi civilians and US combat troops have fallen dramatically!

faisalx, Saddam just make them disappear into thin air. Look at the mass graves all over the countries. Some Turk kids grown up without decent faces, due to gas attacks. Here is some news for you to digest, just occured not too long ago. http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5gu5YjKcwK6rVfqFSrdkgCwBf-45wD953M5EO0 The trouble is, they used to have one monster. Now, they have many power hungry monsters doing it under the banner of religion, one claiming to be holier than another and trying to outdo each other. That’s why the sectarian wars, without the religion that drives a wedge in between, now they would have been… Read more »

Shoes instead of accolades. His reaction compared to when he “first” heard the news of the airplanes crashing into the twin towers just about says it all.

You could never describe a pair of shoes as being fast and furious…until now.

I sympathize with the loss of civilian lives in Iraq, but the crux of the matter where most people seem to ignore is,who in the first place allowed the american soldiers in to Iraq? Most Iraqis and their moderate leaders are the ones who needed them to free them from the atrocities of Saddam,no?Like in any war, civilians are the ones who will be caught in cross fires and stand to suffer the most. And to make matters worst you also have the sectarian war going on amongst the muslims too,so I beleive it is not right to condemn the Americans as per, though I… Read more »

woody, you got to be kidding right? How do you describe a normal Iraqi? If they disagree with the occupation, then it’s not normal? Nobody likes Saddam but he put Iraq out of the limbo with free education and better healthcare, infrastructure; modernized compared to the rest of the Arab world at that time. My iraqi friends prefers to be under his rule than to live in the mayhem created by Bush and cabals. you don’t see people bombing here and there during his time in power.

We got most of the news about US Occupation of Iraq and its failure. But few care to read some of the news how normal Iraqis welcome the US invasions to free them from Saddam regime, the quiet majority that enjoy a more peaceful days today. In fact most of those killed today comes from sectarian conflicts between Sunni and Shia clashes and works of jihadist.

Thx to our daily dosage of “Tentera penceroboh” from our mainstream media.

It shocks me to see the 1.3 million figure. Most of us don’t know or follow the Iraq war issue, so to suddenly know that such a large number of people have perished is disheartening.

The US have so much of debt and financial problems (now with the Madoff issue) yet, they got the time and energy to involve themselves in Iraq.

One thing makes me wonder, why isn’t the US helping Sri Lanka out? After all, since the war there, many people have perished too.
