Operation-Cold-Store-Singapore-1963

Find out more about what happened in Singapore during the Operation Coldstore crackdown of 1963, when over a hundred activists, stalwarts of the opposition front Barisan Sosialis, newspaper editors, trade unionists and university students were detained.

The operation dealt a hammer blow to the Barisan Sosialis ahead of the 1963 Singapore general election and led to the deregistration of the Singapore Association of Trade Unions.

““The world will only be a better place when such men has no final say to or rule with what is unequal or prejudiced. No wonder history is full of the inevitable (fallible) rise & fall of civilisations, power & patronising figureheads.“““ Tunglang, I think you may not be thoroughly right. Sometime the world may need such people for the world to be a better place. Their tough action must be for the people and peace of the country. But sometimes people who first taste power will have power roll over their head and will act as though they are… Read more »

This was LKY’s betrayal of the communist – and a few others to boot. Historically, its now pretty agreed its political genius. If Tunku had used the same thing with Mahathir, the difference between Malaysia and Singapore today would be much less. Instead the difference between Singapore and Malaysia pretty much justified LKY’s action and will ultimately make Mahathir’s legacy the opposite.

Operation Coldstore & Operation Lallang are 2 operations for a same objective – to ‘shut out’ the oppositions. Only the mightier brandishing a skewed law for such unfair operations are able to survive & thrive regardless of the long term consequences. The same perception for the 2 men who engineered such operations.

The world will only be a better place when such men has no final say to or rule with what is unequal or prejudiced. No wonder history is full of the inevitable (fallible) rise & fall of civilisations, power & patronising figureheads.

Anil,
Do you let your new born child decides the brand of milk to take ? Therefore any actions or decision you take, are done in the child’s best interest ?
Singapore is still very young but has achieved so much more than countries that are much older than Singapore. Wasn’t China the same and see what have they are to day ?
Sad to say Malaysia is just going backwards, taking the country into the third world, in deficit and even mulling to lease their fighter jets. What a shamble Malaysia is in !

1 Spore Dollar = Ringgit 2.63

1 Ringgit = 1.82 yuan (was 2 yuan recently, and 2.5 yuan 5 years ago, and 3 yuan ~15 years ago). Parity on the way ?

You may think that I am pro singapore establishment apologist. The situation kinda different in Singapore. It’s either BS dead or PAP dead. Anyway, all the ISA detainees are released. Furthermore, at least in singapore, you still have habeaus corpus & judicial review
