Penang dragon boat regatta: Not quite a ‘stunning’ seafront

This was the scene at the Penang International Dragon Boat Regatta last Sunday.

Someone from the state government gushed over the “stunning waterfront” at Straits Quay. But this ‘moonscape’ photo reveals something else – the utter desolation which will soon make way for high-density property development.

More worryingly, you have to wonder about the impact of the reclamation all over the island – not just on the coastline of Penang Island but also that of mainland Penang.

What is the impact on the coastal ecology and fisheries in the state?

More non-Chinese Malaysians are enrolling in Chinese vernacular primary schools, as the country’s job market increasingly favours Mandarin speakers amid China’s growing power. The data indicates that Malays account for about 15.3 per cent of the total student population in SJKCs. ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute researcher looks at how this might impact Malaysia’s inter-ethnic relations.

RM3 Kebangsaan school meal only had the option of a small portion of plain fried noodles or kuey teow. At the same time, the RM4.50 Chinese school meal options included various types of rice, noodles, vegetables, meat, eggs and fruits.

Farming fish is sustainable if done correctly with proper technology and know how. Let the fish stock in the ocean recover after decades of over fishing.

Be thankful the next time you savour your fish.

GEORGE TOWN: The rapid rise in Penang car numbers continues to show with traffic snarls and bottlenecks appearing even after the usual rush hours.

The number of cars on the road has risen alarmingly in the last few years, and is now a worrying trend for the land-scarce state.

Unlike in the densely populated Klang Valley – where light rail transit systems were introduced as early as 1996 – the lack of similar public transit systems in Penang could be why most households here have a few cars and motorcycles.

The heritage zone should be made car free daily. Then provide a free bus running around the peripheral. Improve the pedestrian walkway within the zone.

Therefore the LRT in Penang is the right decision. In the future we can take LRT instead of contributing to traffic congestion.

What was TMM’s reason for dropping this matter and canceling further discussions with Singapore?

After all the accusations and chest-beating, what is stopping the current government from pursuing the Pulau Batu Putih matter further with Singapore?
