Becoming a fisherman for a day at the southern Penang Island reclamation site

Doku-Andrew participated in a “fisherman for a day” programme recently and became more convinced that the reclamation project, spanning 4,500 acres off the coast of southern Penang Island, should be stopped.

Despite a legal setback, the state government is still intent on pressing on with this ill-conceived mega-project, even though it will not raise enough funds for the first phase of the so-called “Penang Transport Master Plan”, which was trotted out to justify the massive reclamation.

A recent study published in science journal Global Change Biology in April found that 45% of the world’s fish stocks are expected to shift from their typical habitat and stray from their regular migration paths by 2100 because of climate change. Ikan Kembung (Indian mackerels) has move beyond the borders of their usual swimming grounds due to rising sea temperatures. Local fishermen have previously reported an estimated decline of up to 70% in fish sightings, especially in the northern waters of West Malaysia. Although the fishermen attributed their emptier nets to overfishing, it is coupled with the impact of climate… Read more »

See without land reclamation, any development means cutting and removal of vegetation. But with reclaimed land, only All pha wants to live in botak land like Gobi desert? No, people will plant and grow and turn into hanging garden of babylon

Singapore can reclaimed land for economic prosperity (Changi Airport, Marina Bay Sands, Tuas port etc). The people no need to be fishermen to risk their lives in open sea, rather they now have successful modern inland fish farms. Andrew need to venture to Singapore to witness this transition to influence us to follow their success stories.

Very disappointed with Penang Kias. No wonder all good ones went overseas and Sink apor is having the best catch of talents. How to justify it is a good catch? Not scientific and economical anaysis. Why need to go out into the sea? Why not see how much is the yield and productivity? Are the fishes exported to mainland and penang buy cheap fish? What is the amount of yield in Ringgit, Sink dollar, Thai baht? Is there a fish processing and fish tibits manufacturing factories? RM100 – what about minus petrol, nets, boat maintenance and gaji?

15 year old Penang State Govt including Selangor seem to be coming out with the same excuses every time it floods which is ” rainfall intensity was too high ” when the actual reason could be due to poor planning in the water disbursement outlet ‘department’. Remember the Bukit Kukus highway flooding incident ?

To add insult to injury, the project has been named ‘BiodiverCity’! Each island is supposedly ‘modelled on the form of a lilypad’ and will be composed of ‘mixed-use districts’, ‘public beaches’, ‘parks’ and ‘waterfront’ real estate.
