A great day for People Power in Malaysia!

Zakaria Ismail is from the Sungai Batu fishermen's unit - ANIL NETTO/ALIRAN

It has been a most eventful day involving the three-island project in Penang and the plan to develop more than half the north Kuala Langat forest reserve. Aliran has just released this statement:

Today has been an inspiring day for People Power in Malaysia.

Two major successes in one day show we can never underestimate the power within ordinary people to bring about change.

The first was the fishing community’s successful appeal against the Department of Environment’s approval of the environmental impact assessment report for the three-island mega-project. The appeals board found that the plan, involving 4,500 acres of land reclamation in Penang, violated the then-2020 Penang Structure Plan, which was in force. Full statement on the Aliran website

Penang should gear toward high technology manufacturing and farming utilizing robotic automation aided and fast tracked via 5G deployment.

Move away ftom labour intensive. Train rxisting pools vocationally and cut down foreign labour dependence (no need to worry about hostel hygience matter).

For a start PDC should collaborate less with building developers but with high tech firms from Vhina and Taiwan.

No need for reclamation of land from sea. Sea n land meant for cultivation of food. Not for unnecessary brick n mortar. Only people who are bankrupt of ideas will destroy the people way of living n their source for food cultivation. Instead, the state should be helping local food cultivators in increasing their food production be they land or sea. So Brazil can cut and burn Amazon jungles thousand of football fields everyday? Likewise we orso can cut ungles to grow oil palm. We see green but they are palms

We have human resources available in the private sector who could have been called in to volunteer to help. People who specialize in Planning n Supply Chain management. Logistical n Transport management etc. Instead, your leaders were busy playing politics pointing fingers at the Federal Government saying them incompetent in managing the covid 19 crises. Now, it is at your door step and you seem lost. Shameful isn’t it.

And still, want to appeal to reclaim land from sea, kill the food source. Then what ? End up begging from other states for food like what is being done now for health. p2

There are many problems with aquaculture (fish/prawn farms). This includes land grabs, destruction of mangrove forests, pollution of streams and the sea (with chemicals and plastic), and contamination of the product (with medicines, other chemical and pathogens). The remore locations also suits human traffickers and undermines jobs for citizens. I mentioned this a few years ago.

Most people are aware of the large amounts of plastic waste created due to single-use packaging. However, few know that fishing nets are among the primary sources of plastic pollution in our oceans. Entangling marine wildlife and damaging coral reefs, abandoned or lost ‘ghost nets’ not only threaten the marine environment but also the livelihoods of those who depend on fishing.
