First we had the horrendous scar on Botak Hill (Bukit Relau); now comes news that the developer, General Accomplishment Sdn Bhd, and one of its directors, Tan Kok Ping, is suing the environmentalist Penang State Assembly member for Tanjung Bungah, Teh Yee Cheu, for “slanderous statements”.

The remarks were allegedly made when Teh shaved his head bald in protest on 1 January 2014.

This morning, a few dozen friends, Aduns and activists turned up outside court in a show of support for Teh.

See this report in the Malaysian Insider.

It is a crying shame – and a great irony 0 that Teh is being sued over his comments on a public interest issue, the alarming degradation of Bukit Relau.

Botak hill, DAP has lied to us. Fast track development and affordable housing ; DAP has lied to us PAS hudud, DAP has lied to us. And now this. DAP have definitely lied to us GEORGE TOWN: Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) is disappointed with the snub by DAP councilors from Penang Island Municipal Council (MPPP) on its signature campaign to restore the local government elections in the country. http://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/category/nation/2014/05/30/dap-snubs-psm-call-for-local-elections/ Can we ever trust DAP & LGE again. Let us go back to the glory and honesty of the Gerakan govt not the twist and turn of DAP LGE current leadership… Read more »

This is utter ‘bullying’ when an ‘environmental rape’ crime against Nature was committed. Got loads of money to show gag power ah? The magistrate court should in the interest of Penangites throw this case into the CoastMudPolitan Gurney Drive muddied sea. Otherwise, Penang Island is ripe for corporate bullies who have no conscience but recalcitrant propensities to commit crime against the environment by hook or crook. The Botak Hill is still botak & ‘bleeding’ profusely every time it rains the last few weeks. Still no evidence of rehabilitation (as promised) so what are MPPP & the civil court doing? Where… Read more »

Are to asking the judge not to follow the laws and follow your emotion? Law is law and in free country and even in China, one can beat the drums to raise a complain. If the accusation is wrong, the judge awards the damages unless gerakan-bn federal government has brought the level of judges down. Yang and ananars gerakan-bn federal government has appointed some questionable judges.

It said Teh had accused the company of having “violated environmental laws”, “unduly influenced related federal and state agencies, such as the forestry and environmental departments and Penang Municipal Council”, and also “enjoyed or was granted special privileges, protection and immunity from being prosecuted”.

What has LGE to say about this. It seem he is keeping mum

This is not the first time a developer has tried to gag its critics in Penang. 2 developers have threatened to sue the residents in Sg Ara and Tg Bungah when they tried to lodge appeals with the Appeals Board. In the end, the residents stood down as they do not have the legal and financial means to challenge these powerful developers. Say No to Corporate Bullying.

Politic-corporate ‘kam cheng’ at play?
If Karpal Singh is at the helm (of rocket), nothing of this sort of heavy-handed corporate bullying will ever happen. Not even pretentious PR like the above picture showed.
Tiger doesn’t smile but a cat can when enticed to do unprincipled biddings.

Again this is an example of the PR govt failing to support their own rep who is speaking out for public interest. These exco members including Chow Kon Yeow are there for show and do not want to do anything when they have complete power over this entire issue. They can easily issue an ultimatum to the developer to withdraw their suit and rehabilitate the hill or be blacklisted and barred from any further development in the whole of Pg. Will they do that? The answer is no and the reason is obvious. There was once a developer who threatened… Read more »

The state gov could do that, but it could also be perceived as abuse of power to threaten someone to withdraw the suit.

Dear Penangkia, when there is outright injustice against a people’s representative or for that matter even any ordinary citizen, it is the job of this govt to protect them. When the CM was elected he borrowed Abraham Lincoln’s famous words ‘to form a govt of the ppl, by the ppl and for the ppl’. This govt won an overwhelming majority because we believed in that cause. Thus they should only fear the people who put them in power, not a rich developer. If the state had used its powers to grant approval to a developer to destroy the environment, that… Read more »
