Report: Orangutans “treated like prisoners” in zoos?

The Malacca Zoo has made it to the pages of the UK Daily Mail for the wrong reasons. The paper has highlighted the allegedly poor treatment of orangutans at the zoo.

See the report and photos. The photos remind me of the recent Planet of the Apes movie.

The Daily Mail cites wildlife campaigners as saying Malaysia’s zoos are among the worst in the world.

Now, I haven’t been to a local zoo for years and I have no intention of visiting one anytime soon. I don’t believe in zoos or having any animals kept in cages for entertainment or animal testing.

So could any of you who have been to the Malacca zoo verify if this report is true? And perhaps the Malacca Zoo and the Wildlife Department (Perhilitan) folks could respond to the Daily Mail report.

If we don’t respect human rights, what hope do animals have?

If I have the option, I would rather ‘recruit’ older wild animals that cannot hunt but need to be cared for in the zoos. At least they get to enjoy easy free food and medicare while displaying their animal behavior for us to enjoy. For the young and free wild animals, I prefer that they be left untouched to roam and hunt in our pristine rainforest. Designate larger national forest reserves for these flora and faunas rather than for plantation opportunists or greedy developers, which will never, ever resurrect our world famed million years rainforest. Manage eco-tourism with strict regulations,… Read more »

If Melaka cannot takes good care of Orang Utan, may be they may want to offer & transfer them to Singapore Zoo where these mammals will lead a celebrity lifestyles – open concept zoo with abundance of food & vitamins to stay active & healthy.

MB of Melaka reported to have good ties with Sharukh Khan from Bollywood.
These superstar are so rich and may be Ali Rustam can get him to sponsor the Orang Utan.

Dear Daily Mail, thank you for acknowledging that we are a wealthy country. The rest of it is not true. Yours sincerely, Gherkin K.

they should go and have a look at Taiping Zoo. Was impressed with the cleanliness and animals were well kept. That was a couple of years ago. In fact, it was surely many times better than the KL Zoo at that time.

Obviously unaware about Taiping Zoo’s involvement in illegal orang utan and gorilla trade which has been going on for years 🙁
