Najib and the Christmas party hoo-ha

People are still talking about the PM’s aide asking the church to remove religious symbols at the Christmas tea party to which the PM and opposition leaders were invited.

In today’s Malaysian Insider, Utusan’s Ridhuan Tee has chipped in with his idiotic two cents’ worth. (I don’t know why people pay attention to what he says. If he is worried about the widespread visibility of Christmas decorations in shopping malls and other retail outlets, then it might comfort him to know that many Christians are just as concerned about the widespread secular commercialisation of this occasion. What would Jesus make of all this?) Meanwhile, a priest phoned me just now to find out what exactly had happened. One Christian emailed, was critical not only of the PM’s aide but of the Church itself: the big question, he wanted to know, was did the Archbishop agree to the aide’s demands/instructions/advice? What concessions, if any, were actually made?

The Christmas party is an annual event organised by the Christian Federation of Malaysia, an ecumenical umbrella body representing the main Protestant, Oriental Orthodox, Evangelical and Catholic churches in the country. This year, it was the turn of the Catholic Church to play host and so it was held at the residence of Catholic Archbishop Murphy Pakiam – or more precisely at the car park of the premises – where the issue of religious symbols didn’t arise in the first place.

A source familiar with the planning told me organisers had planned a two-hour programme from 3.30pm to 5.30pm. This was made known to the PM’s Department.

One of the PM’s aides, an ‘overzealous’ female non-Muslim, contacted the organisers with the now familiar ‘instructions’ about religious symbols. The organisers were also told that the PM could only make it for one hour during which official speeches would take place.

Church leaders, I gather, were not amused.

Because of the now limited time for formalities, the grace before meals, carols and scripture readings in the programme were done before the PM arrived at 4.00pm. Rosmah showed up towards the end, at about 4.45pm, for a few minutes. During the PM’s visit, an African group performed before a crowd on the tarmac further away, with drums and songs. Guests were seated further away, not really paying attention.

Of course, we have grown accustomed to hearing about the BN folks’ usual nonsense (this time, those ‘instructions’). No real surprise there. But I think the CFM needs to come up with a clarification to clear the air surrounding the controversy and the ‘concessions’, if any, that may have been made.

Perhaps for future events, the churches might want to train their spotlight more on the real reason for the celebration – the incarnation of Divine Justice in our world – and pay less attention to worldly dignitaries or political leaders, some of whom may be out to score points with the electorate through their attendance at such events.

Its now just revealed that the ‘zealous’ aide (Mca, Gerakan or Mic?) in so-called ‘Christmas Blunder’ is actually a non-Muslim girl. NOW UMNO is getting non-Muslim to give instruction on Islamic sensitivities to non-Muslim (Jakim now doing ‘outsourcing?) ?? Its one thing to hire agents that are better suited to do battle for you but its quite another to hire agents that are not qualified to do your battle for it. They are now too lazy and cowardly to do their own battles they are better trained at? How is it possible the aide does not know she is the… Read more »

An ‘abomination of desolation’ of Body of Christ (Christians), if that ever happens.

Luke 23:34
Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.

Love them, pray for them, not hate them. Brethen.

Yes, i agree with Cheng Poh Heng, why religious leaders care for the titleship??? Once i asked, so now we address him as Pastor or Datuk ??? No answer was given to me. Yes, why must we make a point to invite the VIPs to religious functions? Did we do the same to the street people??? Did we go all the way out to invite the homeless and the poor to our church on Christmas Day? There was this church, they used to invite Dr Koh Tsu Koon to their church, once or a few times, i cant remember? I… Read more »

The first thing our religious leaders must do is to decline titles such as “Tan Sri” etc. And there is no necessity to invite any so-called VIP’s, including 1Term PM for Christmas or any other function.
We must concentrate on the essence of Christmas i,e, the birth of our Saviour and Lord Jesus Christ.

Apostate Christianity We are told in Revelation 3 of the 7 Churches. The last church or church age is symbolized by the Church of Laodicea. Laodicea means “the rights of the people.” Thus, this was a church governed by the will of the people, rather than the will of God. This is the church age from which the Antichrist and the False Prophet will emerge. It is the church age Paul talked about that would not endure sound doctrine, but would gather around them teachers that would say what their itching ears wanted and desired to hear (2 Tim 4:3).… Read more »

Someone mentioned ‘respecting the robe’ not the paderi!

What robe? ..hiding behind that robe in the goody name of ‘toleransi’ and peaceful co-existence? Being bullied into submission to Najib’s demands are far from it – unacceptable and undeniably insulting to the Christian fraternity and religion! And his paderi deem his right to submit to such insults?

Wake up Christians, remove him, send him packing if he’s not about to disRobe!
Show your displeasure and right to exist via the Ballot Box come GE-13, no ifs no buts!

If Najib finds religious symbol offensive, he shouldn’t attend the function. He talks about 1Malaysia and then ask the church to remove religious symbols? Gimme a break!

Have no doubt. 1Malaysia is Najib’s brainchild, not APCO’s.

“stop playing christmas songs”
Not all christmas[sic] songs are Christian. People forget that there’s an older festival in Northern reaches at the same time of year – Yule – that is the source of the shiny decorations, snow, trees, Santa, presents, the jolly songs etc. That’s the side of Christmas that gets commercial backing and – possibly unfairly to Christians – is what causes Tee and people like him to think that everybody is converting to Christianity when they go to the shops, sit on Santa’s knee and take photographs of the faux snow show.

All the rantings about 1Malaysia is rubbish. I blame the church also for the boo boo. Knowing the bigots in the government, what do they really expect? In future, stay away from politicians. If they want to join in the celebration, they should do so without any condition. It’s a Christian celebration for God’s sake. Najib, as usual is just using it to gain brownie points. I hope this is a good lesson to the church.

Its these kinds of things that lead people to believe that there is no way for Islam and other religion to co-exist together. Like it or not, there is a lot of Muslim that believe Islamist hegemonism is the only practical way and a lot of non-Muslim that believe that left on their own, Islamist hegemonism will prevail among the Muslim world. My problem is not even their view points but rather what bothers me most is that these kinds of actions are not what being Malay is – its not the Malays I have known growing up in my… Read more »

Bigjoe dont worry. the real malays are all out there watching. for us malays if a person does not respect other religions that means he does not respect his own religion. God is one and God is God for all. If a muslim condemms other religions or make fun of other cultures then he is not a true muslim anyway.

Christians your faith to God is more important then welcoming a minister. Don’t bow to their demands, meeting their demands is like removing your faith.

The Church preaches the true meaning of Christmas, reminding its flock to place Christ at the center of the holiday. If it’s true that it had forsaken Christ to accommodate the politicians, that will be a real shame but not a big surprise.

Yes….Nobody seems to complain that there is no baby Jesus being the centre piece of Christmas holiday. Plus, perhaps, we should remind our dear Ridhuan that Jesus was Islam’s “prophet” too. Second in line apart from Muhammad. Plus, the moslems themselves never discounted the part that Jesus was miraculously born……Ask Ridhuan to check His quran or perhaps…

It is certainly a wrong perception that he was tolerating racism, he was the master of it. Do you not know that in 1987 he created the situation for operation lallang?. He said that he would soak kris… That is racism at the highest order. Except for AAB and Hussein Onn, Razak, M and Najib built their career through racism, and while in power, pretended to talk about diversity in strength. It is not for him to select whether there is diversity in race in the country and whether impurity is good or bad, Malaysians not classed with Najib has… Read more »
