An interfaith prayer and reflection for peace and justice in Gaza will be held at the Holy Spirit Hall in Penang (off Jalan Masjid Negeri/Green Lane at the Caltex station) at 8.00pm on Friday, 23 January.

Kicking off the event will be a speaker from Jamaah Islah Malaysia (JIM).

Over the last couple of weeks, the Herald, Malaysia’s Catholic weekly, has been highlighting the situation in Gaza on its front page.

Meanwhile, the Iraqi journalist who flung shoes at George Bush may have started something. A crowd at a basketball match in Turkey has also tossed shoes in protest at a game. Click here.

  2. The Dalai Lama, a lifelong champion of non-violence on Saturday candidly stated that terrorism cannot be tackled by applying the principle of ahimsa because the minds of terrorists are closed.

“It is difficult to deal with terrorism through non-violence,” the Tibetan spiritual leader said delivering the Madhavrao Scindia Memorial Lecture here.

He also termed terrorism as the worst kind of violence which is not carried by a few mad people but by those who are very brilliant and educated.

“They (terrorists) are very brilliant and educated…but a strong ill feeling is bred in them. Their minds are closed,” the Dalai Lama said.

  3. A Fatah official in Ramallah told the Post that at least 100 of his men had been killed or wounded as a result of the massive Hamas crackdown. Some had been brutally tortured, he added.

The official said that the perpetrators belonged to Hamas’s armed wing, Izaddin Kassam, and to the movement’s Internal Security Force.

According to the official, at least three of the detainees had their eyes put out by their interrogators, who accused them of providing Israel with wartime information about the location of Hamas militiamen and officials.

  4. Right, throw shoes (don’t need them anymore, can walk barefoot), throw stones, throw your lives away. How is this going to help anything? Acting or reacting out of anger or hatred will only lead to more violence, damage and death. This vicious cycle will only stop when people learn to stop hating others purely because of their race or religion, and put away racism and bigotry in whatever form.

  5. There’s an email circulating with a game where you can throw shoes at a moving caricature of GW. It’s a nice way to spend an afternoon. Very therapeutic and stress relieving.

God knows how much stress the msm gives us, with all the stating the obvious statements from our know it all politicians and their kindergarten opinions.

GW, not one of the smartest Americans around, which reminds me……

  6. Identifying overly with one’s race & religion invariably leads to the most virulent forms of cruelty & insanity. Ultimately, it matters not whether the hate emanates from Hamas, fanatical Zionism or Ketuanan Melayu – hate is lethal & feeds only the arms manufacturers, whose own children ought to disown them.

  7. That is why it is important to address such problems in the bud. After 50 years how many of us here actually know/remember how the war started? It would take months to go through the material covering the said period. And from a multitude of sources.

A humorous message on a forum I read years ago put it succinctly; why don’t just the Americans give them Texas for a state instead of another people’s land? It struck closer to the truth than you can imagine. If Americans were bombed for not giving up their land with American weapons, then maybe the rest of the world would be left to their own business.

Maybe, maybe, maybe. I don’t think we have seen the last of the fighting. After the last of the bullets have been fired, the problems of the land have never been solved.

  9. In the last several days Al Jazeera’s Extended Coverage on the Aftermath of Gaza War, has been revealing intesting facts. Some of the expert commentaries include “… the Arab nations were unable to come up with a Joint Statement condemning Israel…”, “…the Axis Of Moderation, which includes Egypt and Saudi Arabia, had secretly hoped for an Israeli victory over Hamas, and having a strong Hamas in their back yard does not help…”
So it looks like many a Malaysians having been jumping and screaming like madmen, when, their own neighbours in the region have a vstly different opinion on the entire issue. Ultimately there would be only one LOSER, the poor civilians who get caught in the cross-fire!

  10. Jordan, Egypt and Saudi Arabia know too well that the continual existence of Hamas will eventually encourage the growth of militant Islamists such as the Moslem Brotherhood in their own countries. This is like the stupid Ming Dynasty general who opened the gates of the Great Wall to allow in the Manchus, hoping that they would help in fighting against anti-Ming rebels

  12. to Mut,
The reason I believe why the British annexed the Land that Israel occopied now is bcos the Jews originated & lived there BC. It’s the birthplace of Jesus Christ. Texas? Well, the original Red Indian from that area will have more right to reclaim Texas as their ancestral land. So, hope you see my point. The world & especially the Gazan should “THANKS” Hamas for all the destruction that befallen them. Now, their families is vanished, home destroyed & living in dirt poor condition. Better condition than before Hamas launched those meaningless rockets into Southern Israel??? What have Hamas achieved & can be proud of???? Can the Muslim world explained the logic behind Hamas action? Certainly not to improve the Palestine lot & bring lasting peace? They are playing with fire & now the whole neightbourhood is burned down!!! Wake Up Palestine.
Back to this shoe-throwing “great example” for the Muslim world. So after so long, this is the best that the Arab can showcase to the world?? The act is as meaningless as giving other the “bird”. It’s easy to do & only paint a poor picture of the person who did the act. Live an honorable life please.

  15. January 21, ’09 The gods reward Israel:

    Israel Discovers Gas!

The Houston-based Noble Energy company, drilling for Israel’s Delek fuel company, announced that it has discovered a huge deposit of natural gas under the Mediterranean Sea near Haifa.

Infrastructures Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer (Labor) said that the find was of “historic proportions,” and that it could change the face of Israel’s economy.

Eighty-seven billion cubic meters, or nearly 3.1 trillion cubic feet, of high-quality gas are estimated to be in three deposits in the Tamar Drilling site, which is named for Delek owner Yitzchak Teshuva’s granddaughter. Teshuva said that the find marks a “historic milestone and a great holiday for Israel,” and that he has no doubt it will “supply Israel’s energy needs for many decades to come.”

  16. Potentially, this could change the geo-strategic situation in the region as Israel moves from a technologically, highly developed country to a wealthy developed country. It could ween Israel off of US economic aid entirely, which both countries would be happy to see, although the US’s economic aid is part of the leverage the US holds over Israel. That could also diminish. It could potentially change Israel’s relationship with Egypt.

Israel buys large quantities of natural gas from Egypt who have come to depend on Israel as a reliable costumer and source of revenue. That revenue contributes to Egypt’s stability and also helps stabilize the the always volatile Egyptian-Israeli relationship in general. These are effects that may not be felt for a few years as the resources are developed… but they will be felt.

  17. US aids Pakistan massacres

Pakistan was once a colony. Now it is a coloniser. In 1948, it invaded and annexed Baluchistan; subjecting the briefly independent nation to neo-colonial rule. The people of Baluchistan were never asked, and never agreed, to join Pakistan. Ever since 1948, they have been subjected to military occupation, ethnic persecution, cultural hegemony and mass impoverishment by the Pakistani state. The current military offensive is the latest of many attempts to crush the Baluch people.

According to information that I have received, which originates from the recently bombed areas inside Baluchistan, the new attacks began two weeks ago. The reports state that the Pakistani army and air force, using US-supplied F-16 jet fighters and Cobra helicopter gunships, are strafing and bombing tents, houses and livestock – not military targets.

These are war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Many Baluch men, women and children have been killed and injured. Pakistani forces have ransacked the houses and tents of tribespeople, often beating, and sometimes torturing, the inhabitants. Around 600 innocent civilians – mostly women and children – have been arrested by the army and taken to an unknown place.

In what looks like a scorched earth policy, Pakistani soldiers are destroying people’s homes and killing or confiscating their farm animals (sheep, goats, camels and horses). Some of these animals are being killed to feed the invading Pakistani army; depriving nomads of their only source of subsistence. Looting is widespread. Soldiers are reportedly plundering the belongings of Baluch people; stealing carpets, cloth, gold ornaments and money.

It is high time shoes are thrown at the Pakistan Embassy and effigies burnt for its atrocities.
