Should Gerakan pull out from BN?

Last night, Mustafa and I spoke at a Gerakan ‘teh tarik’ session on the outcome of the Permatang Pauh by-election and its implications.

I was surprised to see the level of interest among those who attended, including non-Gerakan members as well. Many were keen to know whether Anwar would get his 30 MPs by 16 September.

I told them I had no idea. I stressed to them the importance of institutional checks and balances. We cannot rely on a strong personality alone to bring about change. We need deeper institutional reforms - to the judiciary, police, ACA, Parliament, Election Commission and Suhakam.  We also need a change in the mindset among politicians so that they really serve the rakyat and not themselves.

Towards the end of my presentation, I threw up several scenarios for Gerakan to consider.

  • Remain in BN
    • but it’s sinking, mired as it is in racial politics
    • can it abandon racial politics and turn into a multi-racial coalition?
    • just as important, can it get rid of money politics, cronyism, corruption?
  • Pull out and join Pakatan Rakyat
    • but do they have place for you, beyond adding another feather to the PR cap?
    • merge with one of the existing PR parties
  • Pull out and become an opposition party
    • return to the party’s roots with a clear ideology
    • become a genuine multi-ethnic party
    • turn into national-level opposition party or an opposition party in Penang
    • but for that to happen, it needs a leadership revamp
    • and equally important, do Gerakan members have what it takes to survive in the opposition?
    • and does the party think it has too much to lose in terms of being part of govt in certain states?
  • The final option, which I didn’t mention last night, is just disband and allow its members to decide which parties they want to join.

That said, I do think that Penang in particular needs a multi-ethnic opposition party to serve as a check and balance. Whether Gerakan can play that role remains to be seen. But a leadership revamp is needed first.

Here’s a response from Plain Truth:

Every time it rains heavily, Georgetown floods.

Even if the petrol price at the pumps were to hit RM5.00, Penangites will still have to use their cars for want of a reliable public transport system.

18 years at the helm and KTK could not even fix such basic problems as flood mitigation and putting in place a reliable public transport network.

Instead we are hit with the disgusting land scams revelations which KTK neatly side-stepped (most of it) in his recent debate with LGE.

If the Gerakan membership do not even see fit to revamp their current leadership, it will be better for Gerakan to die a natural death - better for Penang, anyway.

After all, it is a party that has parted with the ideals of its founding fathers a long time back.

What do you think?

  1. Hi Anil

In my humble opinion, what is needed most of all
is a change in the mindset of the ordinary people.

    1. That the people are sovereign and that we are the ones
who choose (and dispose of) our “leaders”. They are to serve us
    and not lord over us
    2. That the “government’s money” is actually our money paid through
hard-earned tax-payer ringgit. Therefore the govt has a
responsibility to manage the people’s money properly.
    3. That we are the real employers of the civil service and that they
    are there to serve us.
    4. That those in power who commit violence and other crimes to stay
in power will be punished sooner or later. History tells us this.
So do recent examples such as Slobodan Milosevich and Radovan
Karadzich in Serbia/Bosnia, the Khmer Rouge mass murderers in
Cambodia. If you do nasty things to your political opponents
when you are in power, be prepared for the consequences when you
are out of power under a democratic regime.

  2. The 3rd one is better for them.

  3. it’s hard to fix a problem if you don’t even think it exists

  4. The 3rd is the best for them, but when you have leaders like Tsu Koon who cant see the forest for the trees , prob too late.

  5. the leaders will not allow gerakan to jump ship.

read today’s headlines in the sun paper on land grabbing in Bandar Utama and you will understand why. the gravy is too good to let go.

  6. I wasn’t around to witness the original ideology of Gerakan. But when I first learnt it last March, I was deeply moved. Gerakan WAS way ahead of its time with great leaders.
I couldn’t agree more on the current leadership change requirement. Nice guy might not be able to lead.
The current Gerakan is lack of leadership, lack of direction.
We need a strong political party to look after Penang, for it is opposition or government. We need Gerakan. Get back in shape, Gerakan! We need you, but we do not need you with your current state of despair. Be vocal, be passionate, be a Rakyat.

  7. Hi Anil,

Just let the party die of natural death as the leaders are oblivious and still in denial. You can wake up a sleeping person but cannot wake up those pretending to be sleeping. Leave them alone and let their members make their own decision as some of them have done most recently.

  8. As long as Koh Tsu Koon is at the helm, he is going to drive Gerakan down, just as what he did with his leadership as CM of Penang. For so many years did he flex his muscle to UMNO as the CM? We even have UMNO Youth putting up banners critisising him and he did nothing. He treasured the post of CM too much. He puts too much hope on UMNO which itself is a sinking ship.

Drastic actions are required but are the members ready to rebel?

  9. To me, Gerakan has already had its chance. And what did they do with it?

They turned it into an old boys’ club. Some, who made up part of the leadership, were quite socialist in their thinking during their youth, thanks to an expensive education in Britain, during an era when it wasn’t politically correct to be rich. That all went out the window once they were in power.

And the arrogance shown by Koh, with his national aspirations and taking for granted that Penang was in Gerakan’s pocket. A bit like someone having one leg in one boat and one in another.

Gerakan should have backed Anwar in his hour of need. As the saying goes, ‘if only…’.

  10. who cares about the survival of gerakan?

the ultimate endpoint is the people.

option 1 is pure stupidity and option 3 is just about preserving your own ego.

if sacrificing the priviledge of power to return the power to the poeple than that is what the current leaders of gerakan should do.

DSAI has done that by going to prison, sacrificing his health to finally achieving what he has done today.

if the a leader is unwilling to do what is right for the people, and they have to err when it comes to their own interest, then they are not qualified to lead a desperate nation like ours.

  11. There is another option Anil - merge with Sarawak base SUPP (a Chinese dominated party). I think Koh met George Chan sometimes back. I didn’t know what was the meeting for but - I suspect in has something to do - about politics.

  12. A true Malaysian on August 29th, 2008 at 3.37pm

    Anil,

This topic was hotly debated in Dr. Hsu’s Forum.

To me, the best option for Gerakan is to “Pull out and become an opposition party ” and concentrate in Penang, their lost bastion.

But this option will be still ‘hard to swallow’ for their top leaders as they will lose their “carrots” from Umno. So, in the end, it is better for Gerakan to disband as all members with conscience will surely leave the party.

  13. Gerakan is a nobody’s child. Blinded and lost its direction due to blind leaders. Maybe it’s a legacy of Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu that his parties always ended up disbanded viz. Radical and UDP.

  14. My view

MPs can pull out from BN, but I feel P.Rakyat is still have not come to a common stand, need to iron out, quite number of issues. If you have watched Aljazeera Last night interview with DSAI, question on dropping NEP, Islamic State, Special right etc. DSAI answered with a mission statement but than have the three parties discussed on it?

The three parties PKR, PAS & DAP had their own agenda & policies, but than only common view for March 8th Election, is to deny the 2/3 majority, well 5 state to fall in Oposition’s hand came in as surpise. We don’t want to sleep in same bed & have different dreams.

We can see what’s happening in Pakistan, Parties pulling out from coalition due to not in agreeing terms to one another. All they wanted is Musharaf to be out, which happened but now?

Pakatan Rakyat must be formed with on strong fundation, let 16th sept to pass, no need to rush, let the 16th Sept be ghostly date for BN boys.

On the other hand P.Rakyat should filter/screen the MPs who wanted to cross over. We don’t want to form another version of BN which is about sink anytime.

It was our hope to see Change, we the Rakyat has chosen the three parties, Pls do don’t disapoint us.

    Joc

  15. Just join PR.

  16. Dear Anil

Gerakan is as good as dead - (some of) their leaders has corrupted the organization with UMNO values of their right to lead without understanding the duty of serving. Gerakan has evolved into another MCA, where the leaders use the offices to …. rather to serve our country and ignore the basis of their existence which is to serve their supporters. It is therefore only logical that in the next few months, the cross overs of Gerakan into DAP and PKR will accelerate.

Gerakan, in my opnion will simply diminish, as its members turn to SDAP and PKR, both of which serves the platforms which Gerakan claims to pursue but failed. The same is true of MCA and MIC, both of which are seen by the constituents as tools of UMNO to perpetuate the racist policies of ketuanan Melayu. The promotion of racial slurs by UMNO in the mass media will serve to hasten the demise of these component parties.

In Johor, the talk of Anwar’s Harapan Baru is the hottest topic in coffee shops. Even Johor, the stronghold of UMNO will fall in the small towns if Barisan fails to counter the non racial platform of PKR.

  17. I suggest they close down gerakan, join pakatan, and work together. Old leader should be get rid if they still hold the same view as BN. BN is now at the edge of their route. Its waiting to sink due to their insensitivity toward the public.

  18. Let’s be frankly, most of the grassroot of MIC, MCA & Gerakan in the PR controlled states had already signal to jump ship if the BN especially UMNO still in denial mode and did not bother to look into the problem and work out a revamp solution… As at now, I did not see it will happen, but go more extreme.

It’s expected that they all will soon abandon the BN ship leaving only their leaders who still believe that there is hope remain and a cause to fight for… Whereby Rakyat have already deserted them…

  19. Gerakan don’t have the courage to pull out of BN, Gerakan’s leadership is getting weaker. I certainly don’t want Gerakan joining Pakatan Rakyat, if Gerakan can’t do it as part of the government, i really doubt whether they can do it in Pakatan. In fact, whether Gerakan, MCA or MIC joining Pakatan will only weaken Pakatan Rakyat, they simple don’t have anything to offer to the people and pakatan. The only way is to go independent and get a clear ideology, revamp the whole party, chop should be start from the top. Only then, we will be able to see a good party.

  20. Gerakan is like a disabled person sitting on a wheel chair…a non performing party, either to BN or to the nation as a whole. They are neither here nor there. If Malaysia is moving towards a two party system of government, they (Gerakan) could form a third force, a coalition with MCA and MIC as a watch dog, middle road party…rather be tagged as a beggar party to UMNO.
Time has changed and if the mindset of these dependent parties do not
adjust to the present situation, they will soon be history.

  21. Not of any use a redundant party.

  22. unfortunately, gerakan is fully depending on UMNO/BN for survival now.

  23. 3 rd option and become opposition - opposition to whom? BN or PK or both of them. In this case Gerakan will remain as an oppostion party. Just like at Social Democrats in UK or Democratic Party in Australia - or like the Greens just shout and shout but cannot do anything. Futher without any support from malays it will die slowly like Pekemas.

  24. Gerakan is past due date, expired. whether they join Pakatan or remain in Barisan will not effect any significant change to Malaysian Politics.

  25. One possible reason that we should not discount regarding MPs jumping ship is that everyone of them have taken their 40 pieces of gold (the price Judas got for betraying Jesus). Hence this is used by the BN federal and states leadership to keep them in line. “You jump and I’ll spill the dirt on you” is the message.

  26. Anil:

Good summary at the forum last night. Gerakan has no choice but to remain status quo, ie remain in BN. UMNO needs Gerakan to portray BN as a “multi ethnic” coalition. Gerakan needs UMNO to survive on the crumbs that UMNO throws to them. They need a bigger brother to cling onto. It is like a synergistic survival for both of them. Gerakan will not join Pakatan after what has been said by its leaders. It will be sheer hyprocrisy to do so. Although I am sure Pakatan will welcome them in. On its own, Gerakan will quickly fade away as a memory. Based on these scenarios, do they have any better option?

Regarding your points that some issues were not raised by PKR during the PP campaign (ISA,OSA, Sedition Act, environmental issues, etc), I think you are being a bit idealistic. The PP electorate are more concerned with their bread and butter issues than these. No doubt these are important issues but these will not go down with the electorate there during the ceramahs. They will probably go “huh?”

  27. Not need to do all these analysis. They are academic. Just get out as fast as possible before the BN-UMNO ship sinks. There are a lot of holes already and water is dripping in slowly. We need just one big torpedo and the whole BN-UMNO ship plus its crew of corrupt and incompetent human beings will sink and drown to dead.

Gerakan, the writing is on the wall. Cabut before it is toooooooo late!!!!

  28. Many had hailed the new political landscape of a 2 party system. We may consider PR as the more ethical of the two coalition but it is in the nature of life and human that this will not remain forever. Whenever government, particularly large government such as Malaysia, the involvement of business will always be inevitable. With open tender system there may be a check but it had been known even with open tender system that corruption is possible. Government ministers who had helped big corporations to secure lucrative government contracts were themselves rewarded with well-paying directorship upon retirement.

Given such a landscape I believe that a third party is always needed. The third party will consists of people dedicated to the cause of the small man or to take up issues that are important to the people rather than businesses. The third party will be small and have very little chance of ever becoming a large party that can form the government. This small third party will have very little involvement with the business sector and have very little chance of becoming the government and hence cannot peddle influence to gain filthy lucre.

They can then act rightly as the concient of the people. The small still voice.

I think Gerakan(minus Lim Keng Yaik 8-)) can play that role.

  29. A merger with DAP which I forsee, will also merge with PKR in due course as a natural evolution of politics in Malaysia. Perhaps even PAS will merge and eventually a true “Laborite”, Democrat, Liberal party is formed.

Vis-a-vis a Conservative, Republican, National BN.

Not my first time purveying this scenario.

  30. I agree with your final option. Gerakan should just disband and allow its members to join which ever party in the P.R. When their leaders were talking who should take over from Koh Tsu Koon as CM I bet they never envisage that they would lose Penang. Koh Tsu Koon look so pathetic when he was campaigning for the BN candidate in Permatang Pauh.

  31. For Gerakan to pull out of BN and become an independent opposition party may not be good for a 2 party system. It leads to 3 corner fights and this always favours BN.

I think the best option is for Gerakan to merge with DAP. Both of them spring from very similar ideology of multi-racialism and socialism. DAP has remained true to its roots but Gerakan has deviated since joining BN. Gerakan can now be said to be devoid of ideology.

Gerakan needs to return to its roots but with this present crop of leaders, it won’t happen. Gerakan will continue to bleed good leaders and members until they are ousted.

  32. It all boils down to self interest. How many true leaders are there in politics? If Gerakan/MCA takes the leap, they are afraid they’ll lose their positions (with power) if they ever join Pakatan.
They are still in denial mode. They are already toothless tigers even remaining in BN

  33. If this country were to have a 2 party system, both BN & PR have their respective rolls.
I think a 5th option may be more favourable.

    Return Gerakan to MCA/MIC.
    Let’s be realistic.
    Without Penang, Gerakan is finished.
Let members decide individually whether they want to join MCA/MIC or PR component parties.

  34. malaysian niah.. on August 29th, 2008 at 7.39pm

gerakan … r … i think better close down the party lar….only idiots left inside there now and… the more reason why PR should not accept gerakan

  35. I had a talk with an ex-penang city councilor who served under Gerakan for 2 years . He left both Gerakan and the city council because he was disgusted with the party. Any discrepancies he discovered in the city council was swept under the carpet because it would be embarrassing for the idiot leader and he was told not to talk about it. He also found that the idiot will flip-flop on decisions constantly and if you did not toe the party line you will find yourself slowly pushed into a corner. To be a Gerakan member and to be able to rise up in the ranks you need to have a strong ability to kiss a** so you see the current top guys in Gerakan are really good a**-kissers without any other real ability.
Why would we want them to be the opposition in Penang? Didn’t we give them a clear enough message on March 8th ??

  36. malaysian niah.. on August 29th, 2008 at 9.17pm

someone should launch an online campain -TUTUP MCA, MIC & GERAKAN

After all, it is a party that has parted with the ideals of its founding fathers a long time back.

  38. Gerakan,MCA and MIC should merge and then quit politic, form a big social club and indulge in social activities such as recycle campaign, beautifying our environment and educating school children on moral etc. These activities will lessen their sins for their previous incompetency and corruption.

  39. Too late for the cancerous Gerakan party to stay and survive in Penang….Perhaps becoming an independent opposition party in BN held states???Since they are better compared to BN when without BN???Or maybe honest, sincere ones like DR.Toh leave Gerakan for Pakatan Rakyat while the rest in gerakan just … rot …l???

Someone i know by the name of Frankie should leave too, you are innocent, why dont u leave Gerakan for PKR or DAP??? I know u know me, Frankie…..if you want to survive, just sit beside Anwar in ceramah just like what Dr.Toh did….and may you be blessed with good Feng Shui….and also good meaningful party….All the best to Dr.Toh…..may KTK rot … together with UMNO morons…….

  40. My thoughts - Gerakan was swept away because it compromised its ideals. Once that happens, it lost the will to listen to the people. I really don have the answers for Gerakan really.

  41. If it stays on in BN, Gerakan will become another PPP, hanging on to BN’s coat tails in the hope of seats and positions long after it has lost relevance to Umno.

  42. malaysian niah.. on August 30th, 2008 at 1.07am

this country is in a serious need of ECONOMIC VISIONARIES - people like Lim Chong Eu and mayyyybeee Dr.M. we need leaders that can see 10 years ahead on what this world is going to be like and how Malaysia is going to play a prominent role in that world.

social progress requires a strong economic backbone or not its just going to fall apart because it is not sustainable.

right now in UMNO, MCA, MIC, PPP, Gerakan and all the other sabah sarawak component parties and also sadly to say PAS, DAP and PKR - there is no one that fits the bill of an economic visionary.

  43. Gerakan oh Gerakan! What happened to you?

A party that offered so much to the color blind Malaysian wannabe with its founding ideology but no longer practices nor promote the ideology.

Instead, today you are so fearful for your survival that you depend on UMNO to give you the lifeline or rather should I say leash.

The party may claim its ‘intellectual’ membership but over time, it has been diluted by self-serving members until today those without conscience of service to the country and its people determine the future of the party.

The leaders of Gerakan fails to understand that the party will never come back into prominence unless it is on the coattails of UNNO, for the rakyat is disgusted with your lack of position in accordance with your ideology.

Since you no longer have the support of your traditional base, then the only way the party can come back is on the support of the UMNO hardcore.

So where does that leave you? More of the same?

If you continue to claim yourself a party of intellectuals, then it is a simple case of identifying what you should do next or rather should have done.

If you are still unable to fathom what the rakyat wants, then the party is devoid of intellectuals but comprises mainly of scared selfish and ‘blind’ personalities.

The party is as good as doomed! 3 windows of opportunity were presented to Gerakan to reconsider its position within BN, immediately after 8 March, at the onset of unity talks by UMNO/PAS and the recent by-election, but they let the windows float by.

Soon enough, the party itself will float by into oblivion much to the loss of ordinary Malaysians!

I do not know what else to say except bye-bye.

  44. Gerakan should assume the role of an opposition as a credible check against PR. Acton’s adage and all.

  45. All I can think of at the moment is that Gerakan is purely a ‘parasite’ party. They are just merely leeches. They will never foresake big …. UMNO.

When someone mentioned it is a ‘mosquito’ party? Well, do you know how mosquite survive? Yes, they are ‘parasites’. Even though many may refer them as ‘beggar-party’, I doubt that is the right name. We should refer and call them ‘PARASITE-PARTY’!

And, can anyone let us know what is the life-span of a mosquito? Yes, Gerakan will soon ‘pupus sendiri’ when their life-span is finished and it will not be long by the way they open thier mouth to suck us Rakyats like mosquitoes.

  46. Talking about land scandal in Penang. Land scandals in Penang seems to be rampant. I know of a piece of land that was supposed to be a recreation ground and the residents in the area could not understand why a condo got build up there. Since it was not a big piece of land, car park space is limited and the cars from the residents of the condo just spill over to the roadsides much to the annoyance of the residents of the houses nearby. I believe the previous state government has a hand in this but due to the apathy of the people, no protest was made or maybe protest was made but the politicians know how to play it down. What Limg guan Eng exposed is just the tip of the iceberg. The former Gerakan state government will never find and thing wrong with the numerous land deals. No corruption just only “mistakes”.

  47. Gerakan started out well as an opposition party that managed to secure itself as an alternative to the then Alliance - enough to secure itself the right to rule Penang. Over the years, after the leadership decided to positively respond to The olive branch offered by the Late Tun Abdul Razak forming Barisan Nasional, it slowly lost its focus as it jostled to a “better MCA”. I agree Gerakan needs to revamp itself and the best way is out and away from BN. Then and only then it can consider whether it can contribute - perhaps - in Oakatan Rakyat.

  48. what did gerakan do for us? just name me one? they are useless and used rakyat for their own end for 30 years.

can they be useful for once and leave BN and lead the domino effect? If they do that at least people will take notice. if not they will just fades. At least PPP has kayveas.

  49. We are creatures of habit. Hence despite the overwhelming logic for leaving the BN, Gerakan is still unable to let go and make the critical decision to ensure that they stay relevant.

UMNO the leader in BN has lost its direction and their component partners are at a lost as to what they should do. To stay on is a formula to sink with the ship. I should think in this case it would be wise for the crew to jump ship and let the honourable captain go down in glory with the ship.

The consideration of whetther they should join PKR, re-invent themselves, or whatever is of secondary importance. They should save their own skins. ;)

  50. UMNO should immediately take action against a Datuk who alledgedly referred to the Chinese as squatters in the country. GERAKAN, MCA and MIC should join hand in pursuing this matter. The statement has equally affected the feelings of the Indians and other minorities in the country. After 50 years of independence, we still see racial politics rearing its ugly head. This is bad for the the future of the country. BN has sunk to its lowest bed after the Permatang Pauh by-election. We saw how the racial cards were played explicitly by some UMNO leaders to win the hearts of the Malays. It did not work, though. Most Malays voted for DSAI instead. Most Malays are now matured enough. Most Malays are of mixed race and they now have a soft spot for other races. In Malaysia now, we have cousins, nephews, nieces, uncles, aunties, grabdparents, parents etc., of different races and religions. We are so mixed that racial politics will soon die a natural death. But, some UMNO … are still talking about race and condemning the Chinese and Indians as ‘aliens’ in this country. Sad for the country. For rhis reason, PR will thrive and DSAI is on the right track to bring racial politics to an end.

  51. It is no longer feasible to consider BN as the alternative party. Not even a complete revamp of the party and ideology will suffice to keep them alive. The rot has set in too deep. It is also obvious that UMNO and its component parties are in self-destruct mode. So leave them be to die a natural death.

Do we want Gerakan to cross-over? NO! We don’t really want anyone from the old regime. In any case, the present leadership cannot jump ship. Too many skeletons in the closet. It is NOT a case of them not realizing that the game is up! They are not stupid. Many citizens cannot understand why these “leaders” are not making the changes so obviously needed. Its not that they don’t want to. It just that they CAN’T! They have been beneficiaries of the gravy train. They will be exposed if they jump ship and they will face jail terms. (But they will face jail terms eventually anyway when Pakatan takes over - major worry and dilemma for them).

However, for now it may be necessary for DSAI to reluctantly accept some of the less corrupt morons from these component parties so that he gets the numbers. But we will eventually have to get rid of them too.

It is actually an opportune time for a BRAND NEW multiracial party to be formed - as an alternative to Pakatan. Someone of stature and caliber ought to be persuaded to do this - so that we have a credible alternative to Pakatan for the future. Zaid Ibrahim does come to mind - but he too is tainted by a long historical association… And I suspect he lacks the “goolies” to do the needful. Vested interests you see!

Come on - lets think of someone who will give brother Anwar a run for his money. I am sure DSAI will welcome the challenge from someone worthy. And then lets goad him to start the political party ASAP. Now, here is where the disenchanted members (leave the corrupt leaders out) from the BN component parties who are uncomfortable with DAP or PAS or DSAI can hop over to and give us all an intelligent, purposeful and exciting challenge for the future of our country.

As for Gerakan and the rest of BN - bid them goodbye - they are history!

  52. Why did the late Tan Chee Koon leave Gerakan after 1969 GE when Penang fell to the Gerakan? My guess is he didn’t want to be in the ruling Alliance govt. My take is that it is better for the Gerakan to leave BN as to sort itself out once again and the direction in which they originally intended it to be. Don’t join PR. Just be in the opposition to both BN and PR and be the check and balance that is so crutially needed in our country.

  53. Gerakan like so many of us chose the wide gate- the path of least resistance i.e. to play the role of the alternate chinese party in BN.
In this way they get the most carrots from BN for playing their role of check mating MCA. MCA could not be too assertive due to Gerakan’s presence in BN. In other words they became a stooge of UMNO just like MCA. Old habits die hard.

They have a national party with its organisation which will be useful for PKR if they so choose to leave. Or they could be non Pakatan opposition party or a third force with the ideology of the Gerakan founding fathers. They may even attract some MCA dissidents who don’t want to join PR.

Having said that they may probably die a slow death like PPP over 3-4 General elections due to the decrepit state of the leadership.
It is not easy to chane.

  54. Dear Anil;
What would you do if you are an eunuch to a Tuan UMNO fixated on sodomy?

  55. Wong Chee Kong on August 30th, 2008 at 2.19pm

    I agree with PLAIN TRUTH.

It’s so clear that KTK & Gerakan had failed in their duties as Plain Truth has pointed out. I was utterly disappointed and disgusted that that was the CM who had ruled for umpteen years when he debated against LGE. The defensive way he countered LGE’s pointers was like a school kid trying to justify his wrongs. Come on, the rakyat are not stupid. If that is the kind of leadership that Gerakan can produce, it is better that the party die a natural death. I take my hat off to Dr Toh for his unwavering decision to quit a party that no longer has any sense of direction.

Gerakan is now like a headless chicken caught in a dilenma that nobody from within can stand up as its champion to articulate change. It has become (like what the Chinese saying goes) like a pan of scattered sand dispersed all over. It will soon be a chapter in Malaysian political history. How sad. Its founders’ ideologies have so fast evaporated under KTK’s leadership (or is it lack of leadership?).

  56. Don’t make me laugh - Gerakan merge with SUPP? SUPP under George Chan is so deep in the pocket of Taib that you can’t even fumble for it. SUPP is another party that needs to be disbanded, by its supporters leaving to join either Keadilan or DAP. These two so-called leaders, George Chan and Toh, have lived for so long on a different planet they don’t even know what grassroots are!

  57. Yeap I totally agree that these Gerakan dummies should leave the BN and join PR. This should teach those UMNO bullies a lesson! Same goes to those MCA loonies and MIC… !

  58. [...] it is, the idea is being floated that Gerakan should withdraw from BN. Whether it would join Pakatan Rakyat, stand alone, or dissolve, it’s loss to BN, though a [...]

  59. Whatever decision Gerakan want to make is no different to me, as a Penangite, i had enough already of this … political party ruling in my state.
