A massive 8.9 quake and huge tsunami have struck northern Japan, triggering a wider tsunami alert around the Pacific rim.
2036: A contact in the Philippines reports that 19 provinces in north Luzon are on high alert. Tsunami waves have already reached the vicinity and more waves are expected to hit. No reports of casualties.
With a dam reportedly having broken in Fukushima prejecture, washing away homes, and Japanese authorities monitoring the nuclear plants, one question arise: Do we still want to go ahead with a 100-storey tower, nuclear power plants and more dams of our own in Malaysia?

IT IS …NOT… CREST-TO-TROUGH WAVE HEIGHT.
VALUES ARE GIVEN IN BOTH METERS(M) AND FEET(FT).
PER – PERIOD OF TIME IN MINUTES(MIN) FROM ONE WAVE TO THE NEXT.
NOTE – DART MEASUREMENTS ARE FROM THE DEEP OCEAN AND THEY
ARE GENERALLY MUCH SMALLER THAN WOULD BE COASTAL
MEASUREMENTS AT SIMILAR LOCATIONS.
EVALUATION
SEA LEVEL READINGS CONFIRM THAT A TSUNAMI HAS BEEN GENERATED
WHICH COULD CAUSE WIDESPREAD DAMAGE. AUTHORITIES SHOULD TAKE
APPROPRIATE ACTION IN RESPONSE TO THIS THREAT. THIS CENTER WILL
CONTINUE TO MONITOR SEA LEVEL DATA TO DETERMINE THE EXTENT AND
SEVERITY OF THE THREAT.
A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF WAVES AND THE FIRST WAVE MAY NOT BE THE
LARGEST. TSUNAMI WAVE HEIGHTS CANNOT BE PREDICTED AND CAN VARY
SIGNIFICANTLY ALONG A COAST DUE TO LOCAL EFFECTS. THE TIME FROM
ONE TSUNAMI WAVE TO THE NEXT CAN BE FIVE MINUTES TO AN HOUR, AND
THE THREAT CAN CONTINUE FOR MANY HOURS AS MULTIPLE WAVES ARRIVE.
FOR ALL AREAS – WHEN NO MAJOR WAVES ARE OBSERVED FOR TWO HOURS
AFTER THE ESTIMATED TIME OF ARRIVAL OR DAMAGING WAVES HAVE NOT
OCCURRED FOR AT LEAST TWO HOURS THEN LOCAL AUTHORITIES CAN ASSUME
THE THREAT IS PASSED. DANGER TO BOATS AND COASTAL STRUCTURES CAN
CONTINUE FOR SEVERAL HOURS DUE TO RAPID CURRENTS. AS LOCAL
CONDITIONS CAN CAUSE A WIDE VARIATION IN TSUNAMI WAVE ACTION THE
ALL CLEAR DETERMINATION MUST BE MADE BY LOCAL AUTHORITIES.
BULLETINS WILL BE ISSUED HOURLY OR SOONER IF CONDITIONS WARRANT.
THE TSUNAMI WARNING WILL REMAIN IN EFFECT UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.
THE JAPAN METEOROLOGICAL AGENCY MAY ALSO ISSUE TSUNAMI MESSAGES
FOR THIS EVENT TO COUNTRIES IN THE NORTHWEST PACIFIC AND SOUTH
CHINA SEA REGION. IN CASE OF CONFLICTING INFORMATION… THE
MORE CONSERVATIVE INFORMATION SHOULD BE USED FOR SAFETY.
THE WEST COAST/ALASKA TSUNAMI WARNING CENTER WILL ISSUE PRODUCTS
FOR ALASKA…BRITISH COLUMBIA…WASHINGTON…OREGON…CALIFORNIA.

Can you initiate a discussion on the affordability of housing in malaysia from young people. The government is allowing those belwo 35 with monthly income less than RM3000 to undertake 30-year 100% loan.
However, based on my calculation below, there is a downside:
Let’s do a simple maths here:
Monthly salary 3,000
Less: EPF (330)
Less: SOCSO (5)
Less: Income tax (51) – single status
Net take home pay 2,614
With 2,614 a month, one will need to carefully budget to take care of the following fixed commitments:
1. Housing loan repayment. Present BLR is 6.30% but lets assume one is able to get a fixed loan at rate of 5.25% for entire 30 years, repayment per month for 198,000 loan is 1,093.
2. Cagamas 1st 10% financing. Assume 0% interest over 30 years, repayment per month is 61.
3. Car loan. Assume a Proton Saga 1.3s 38,000, 90% financing at 2.58% for 7 years, monthly repayment is 480.
4. PTPTN loan assume 10,000 for 10 years, monthly repayment is 108.
5. Housing loan MRTA (mortgage redcuing term assurance) assume lender 27 yrs old, premium is 4,992 per year, per month is 416.
Just the above 5 items, monthly commitment works out to 2,158!! Balance of 461 from the take home pay!!
The balance would have to take care of the following expenses:
1. Daily meals
2. Petrol for the car
3. Astro
4. Mobile phone charges
5. Internet charges
6. Electricity bill
7. Water bill (first 20m3 free in Selangor – THANK YOU!!)
8. Indah Water bill
9. Entertainment
10. Essential and non-essential shopping
11. General house maintenance and repairs
12. All the 6% government tax
Further, remember to set aside, if there’s anything left that is, for the following annual / half yearly expenses:
1. Assessment
2. Quit rent
3. Property insurance (fire)
4. Car road tax
5. Car insurance
6. Graduate’s professional association’s membership fee
Let’s not forget the following too upon purchasing a property:
1. Lawyer’s fees
2. Stamp duty on SPA
3. Bank loan fee and stamp duty
4. Valuer’s fee (if property is not new from developer) for bank loan
Is it scary enough? Think carefully before you commit.

Ya, but different calendars are calculated differently. Maybe 2012 is an approximate date. Could be slightly earlier or later…not that I’m staking my life on predictions.

When the days are sunny and blue sky, and suddenly these earthquakes striking in more frequencies all over the world. It makes us wonder why life has to be so disastrous. Why so much of ‘wake up calls’ such as these calamities.
Even if we are now in the end times, I would rather be more positive for better times ahead, than to dwell on pain, sorrows and inevitabilities. Surely there is a humane way to influence our future destiny, for the better.
My sympathies to NZ and Japan.

BBC World reported 200 to 300 bodies were found on the beach with waves over 8-10 meters high. Meanwhile Hawaii in the pacific region on full alert, is begining to feel the tsunami waves too.

Is Penang ready for the BIG ONE???
LGE….regarding all those slope developments and the property price priming…….maybe time to wake up
After the condolences have died down for Japan, it maybe wise for Penang to seek help from the Japanese, the best people prepared for earthquakes, and advise Penang on its development….and be prepared for earthquake eventualities…
Remember 2004…and jangan lupa lupa like Mahathir..
Penang is only 15 mins to Acheh…
Be prepared……never think it could not happen here…
After Christchurch, Tokyo…it could happen anywhere …including Penang…..and its high rises and condos are not built to withstand earthquakes…..

If they don’t find a way to cool down that nuclear power plant there is really going to be trouble coming up besides what already happened! Yikes!

Are you planting hidden script to have your head icon show up in my Opera browser? I found your head icon intruded my browse illegally.

No hidden script. It’s just the favicon icon for the website that appears on the opened browser tabs like other website’s.

That is strange, your favicon also appears in my website main page tourmalaysia.com, not just your website.
I can take screen shot to prove that funny thing.
I cannot find way to remove your head icon from my browser whenever I go to my travel blog.

Very strange. Which version of Opera are you using?
Could you please try on a different PC/laptop because I don’t see the same problem on Opera 11.01 here.

Chrome is fine without showing your icon in tourmalaysia.com tab.
I’m using opera 11 (latest). Will try in another PC later, and update it later.

I tried to reproduce this on Opera version 11.01. I opened up two tabs, one for this blog and one for tourmalaysia.com
The favicon for this blog only appears on the browser tab of this blog and a different icon (Opera default?) on tourmalaysia.com
Could you try on a different PC/lap top and see if you have the same problem?
Does anyone else have similar problems with the favicon?

Some browsers can exhibit funny behaviours when websites behave oddly. Your tourmalaysia.com, for example has neither a (modern way) link rel=”shortcut icon” in its pages, nor a (old way) /favicon.ico – it actually returns some weird User-Agent-sniffing nonsense (it has Vary headers to that effect).
If you either include a link rel=”shortcut icon” (just copy Anil’s from his page source, but point to your own shortcut icon) or put a /favicon.ico on your own webserver and make sure your weird software that sniffs User-Agents doesn’t interfere with it. The first option is probably easier and its more modern / ‘standard’.

Thanks for the clarification, Sean.
The funny thing is I tried to reproduce the problem using the latest Opera browser on my side, but the tourmalaysia.com tab looked fine and did not display the favicon for my blog.
Maybe the OS plays a role too…?

This is sad, my hearts goes for the people in Japan. The nuclear in Japan can cause havoc if anything happens. Does it mean that the end of the world is coming sooner than we think? It’s about time to do good and pray for forgiveness for all the sins we all have done.

“It’s about time to do good”
Your God omniscient or not? I think most popular concepts of God include sufficient wisdom and all-seeing-ness that waiting until things looked bad to start doing good wouldn’t earn you many ‘heaven points’. I don’t think you can cram for the heavenly exam.
Look out for havoc all over northern latitudes if Japan has a nuclear problem. Nuclear energy is being promoted as the saviour of cold, wealthy northern countries. The truth of the matter is that they are unsustainably (in the face of fossil fuels running out / their owners demanding a reasonable price for them) under-resourced and overpopulated. People will vote for ‘safe green cheap’ nuclear energy because volunteering to die (to reduce the population) is the only other option. If the latter option becomes the only option, I think civil unrest will only rise and rise. Expect free help from all over the northern hemisphere to avert a nuclear problem in Japan or clean it up. Nuclear is ‘too big to fail’.
