Looks like Gerakan has some tough decisions to make, if they are to survive as a party. This is what Koh Tsu Koon says here:

“If you go on sentiments alone, I would say more than 60% (want us to leave), but we are taking a lot of factors into consideration, and a decision cannot be based just on sentiments.

I believe one of the factors is the Gerakan reps with positions in government will probably lose their positions if they pull out.

The choice for the party is simple: either return to its roots and embrace the reform agenda whole-heartedly (can it really do that within the Barisan and with the current party leadership?) or lose more and more of their members and disappear into oblivion.

And what is the reform agenda? To me, that would mean:

  • removing all repressive laws,
  • wiping out corruption and money politics; disentangling business from politics
  • committing seriously to multi-ethnic politics,
  • narrowing the wide income disparities and wiping out poverty
  • providing universal access to quality health care and education
  • ensuring the dignity of workers and upholding workers’ rights,
  • ensuring that development is holistic and people-centred (i.e. truly beneficial to the people), and
  • protecting the environment.

  1. KTK – save the talk lar. Gerakan had 18 years to do what Penangnites wanted you all to do. Instead, you humbled yourself to the likes of Rashid, Hilmi and all of the best -UMNO. Suggest you disband the whole party and walk across to either PKR , DAP or even PAS. At least they have more principles than ever

  2. I strongly believe that the only way the Gerakan party can remain relevant and able to carry out its ‘reforms’ and work for its original ideals and objectives is to leave BN coalition and be on its own for a while to regain its direction. After a while, it will regain some traction and develop itself again and I am sure many Malaysians will give it another chance. Afterall, that was what Gerakan was all about years ago before it became part of BN and got its own objectives overshadowed by the aggressive UMNO and their chauvinistic politics.

Yes, Gerakan should leave BN to survive and be relevant again.

  3. Let’s face reality, UMNO/BN will only reform and change when they become the opposition in the Parliment. Becos’ they can’t afford to reform and change to lose the luxuries in their life for their next generations and cronies. Period. Divide and rule and creating fears amongst all Rakyat is a scam which will go down the drain. Corruption and manipulation have took away the basic needs of all Rakyat. There’ll be everything for everyone and enough for everyone when PR rules.

  5. GERAKAN, MCA, MIC, PPP and the other parties in East Malaysia should seriously consider LEAVING BN. I do believe if this happen, we can expect better future for all in this country. LEAVE LAH, WAIT FOR WHAT?

  6. KTK what factors are so great that outweigh sentiments and principles.
Are you not humiliated enough, even by a small fly from UMNO, what are your chances to deal with the big boys. Gerakan is at the cross roads of Malaysian politics, surely, sticking around with BN will not improve your image and credibility. Time to call it quit!

  7. The only way to reform Umno is for as many component parties to leave BN. One term as Opposition will do wonders for Umno. Gerakan need to restore their dignity after being humbled by an Umno…

  8. KTK your indecisive decision is question. This time around if you
dont act fast you will be left behind with the older ‘generation’
and a few of the gerakan building to handle if you may feel happy with. You know what you want but your grassroot think otherwise.
The sooner the better or else gerakan will be forgotten…….and you will be blame..

  9. I wonder how many of the 60% will walk the talk if Gerakan chooses to remain in BN.

The way things are going, it will probably take many generations for BN in its present form and set up to recapture Penang and everyone knows without Penang, Gerakan will be hard pressed to stay relevant.

No sane Penangite will want to give up Guan Eng’s CAT for a return of the corrupt and racist hegemony of UMNO over Penang.

March 8 changed the political situation in Penang.
Penang is only for PR to lose and not for BN to win back.

  10. Please stay where you are. You and your ilk, like Mr. Autopont, should lie in the bed which you made.

We don’t need the longest buffets anymore either.

It’s been an easy ride for you all. Don’t trouble yourselves. There are plenty of more capable people around in Penang these days.

We’re in no mood for reruns.

  12. Koh, The more time you people take to think…think…think… there’ll be no more members left…Just call for a meeting amongst yourselves, draw lots- ‘You’ – DAP……..’You’ PKR…….’You’ PAS..
and in no time..ex-Gerakan members will become more relevant and known to us… Do something for the people lah, brother Koh.. Just like Lim Guan Eng… he’s the “LIGHT’ of Penang…
Penang will ‘boom’ under LGE’s guidance…
That man has got …class, moral, ethics and all things related..

Think hard, Koh… Do it soon…

  13. What Han2 and wandererAUS has mentioned is absolutely true. To KTK and Gerakan – Don’t dwell on the past any more and stop continued being humiliated publicly – no one in the ruling coalition is genuinely sorry for you KTK as far as we simple folks can see, even when your photo is being torn publicly. It is time to move on and it is never too late.

  14. KTK the writing is on the wall. The 60% sentiments are a overwhelming majority. Yes, There are many choices. But Non of them have the 60% majority to leave BN. Bite the bullet one and for all. Leave BN. The insult that Gerakan is taking is not worth the salt. Just imagine UMNO at is weakest still insult you like dirt. What future do you want to hope for? Do you want to appeal like MIC and gets ignored? Believe me even if MIC’s Samy kneel down and beg for the Hindraf they will not give a damn. Such is the hard truth that you are facing. YES BITE THE BULLET. LEAVE NOW…At least Gerakan is still intake. Disillusion members are leaving…if you stay in BN only 40% will be left. Rally the 60% to fight for another day with PKR or Independent.

  15. what is in the head of that mopiko man. It hard to believe that such a highly educated man like KTK fail to see the reality and what is good for future generation. No wonder for 51 years, we are still behind apart from bragging with all the tallest building and many more that doesn’t benefit the rakyat. Forget GERAKAN and think of Pakatan Rakyat.

  16. What are you waiting for Koh Tsu Koon? There is absolutely no, I repeat no benefit for Gerakan to remain in BN. … Gerakan should just … quit BN on the spot. If Gerakan don’t want to join PR, then it is better for it to just dissolve itself. …

  18. TOO LONG GERAKAN, MCA AND MIC AND OTHER SMALLER PARTIES HAVE BEEN PLAYING SECOND FIDDLE TO UMNO.

AT THE END OF THE DAY RACIAL POLITICS DOES NOT BRING ABOUT A WIN-WIN SITUATION WHERE ONLY ONE COMMUNITY WINS.

PARTIES MUST STAND-UP FOR ALL CITIZENS..NOT ONE SECTOR ONLY..

THE MAHATHIR ERA HAS MESSED UP THE FOUNDING FATHERS AIM FOR RACIAL INTEGRATION AND FAIR PLAY LEAVING ABOUT 5% OF THE MALAYS VERY RICH WHILE THE REST OF THE CITIZENS ARE STRUGGLING.

tHE CURENT GOVENMENT WAS GIVEN THE MANDATE TO RIGHT THIS. hOWEVER AS CAN BE SEEN THERE ARE NOW MORE WRONGS THAN RIGHTS…

GERAKAN MCA MIC MUST TALK ABOUT CITIZENS RIGHTS… NO MORE ETHNIC RIGHTS..

IT TAKES GREAT POLITICAL WILL AND RISK TO VOICE OUT THESE THINGS..BUT AS LEADERS THAT IS THE FIRST RESPONSIBLITY..

GERAKAN MCA MIC MUST REMOVE ISA..AND WORK TOWARDS GIVING THE ALLEGED GUILTY PARTY TO DEFEND HIMSELF IN COURT. iT MUST ENSURE THAT THE JUDICIARY IS FREE WITHOUT EXECUTIVE CONTROL..

AND THE POLICE MUST BE MADE TO WORK FOR THE RAKYAT AND NOT TO
    EXPLOIT OR USE FEAR …

  19. The sad things about gerakan is their stronghold is only in Penang .. afer so many years , they are still focusing in penang area ..

If Gerakan Leaves BN, the seat currently they contesting will taken away by UMNO .. so if they join PR .. since penang is holding by DAP , you think DAP will allow Gerakan who join PR to contest againts BN ..

So is a die die situation .. leave die no leave also die ..

  22. I believe there is a time for everything. So, so far as Gerakan is concerned, now is the time to QUIT BN and see what u can do with
    yourself.

If Gerakan were to join Pakatan, then, it is like Gerakan is biting its own tongue. Remember the party’s adviser, Tun Lim Kheng Yaik, critised Anwar Ibrahim mercilessly…

To all the Gerakan’s leaders, all of u are in deep s*** now. Serve u right!!!

  23. Gerakan getting into bed with MCA?

They’d be hard pressed to find one big enough to fit all their fat heads.

The reason? There should only be three component parties, one for each race. PPP should also merge with MIC to represent the Indian community. (Er, what happened to IPF?)

There we are, straight from the horse’s mouth. And all this while, we were under the impression that Gerakan was multi racial.

  24. What is there left for you Gerakan fellas now in the BN? KTK has already said that if the party do not have any meaningful role to play, the party would quit the coalition. Let’s face reality in a realpolitik world. You no longer have a meaningful role as UMNO will still call the shots. All the talk about consensus, blah, blah, blah are just eye-wash. Quit now before its too late. Better still dissolve the party and let the members decide which party in the opposition they would like to join. Once the PR comes into power, by then it will be too late for you to join. UMNO do not want you, the PR do not want you. You will die a natural death, slowly but surely. So, if you have any integrity left in you, leave now!!!
