The Edge reports that the Singapore headquartered Carmel Group, an integrated provider of electronic manufacturing services (EMS), has closed down its subsidiary in Bukit Minyak, Penang, leaving 200 workers jobless.

From the report, it’s not clear what kind of compensation they have received, if at all.  Note, the workers reportedly have not received their remuneration since April.

Of the 200 workers at the Scarmel Penang subsidiary,120 of them were locals. They lodged a report with the State Manpower Department on May 18.

On May 13, they were notified by the management about the immediate closure. However, they have yet to receive their remuneration since April.

Scarmel Penang specialises in PVC molding, precision machining, mechanical sub-assemblies, wire harnesses and surface mount connectors / headers assy for multi-national companies in the industrial areas in Penang, Butterworth, Kuala Lumpur.

According to Carmel Group website, it also has subsidiaries in Senai, Johor and Batam in Indonesia but there were no details if these plants were still operating. The group’s total workforce before the layoff in Penang was about 1,500.

When is the Malaysian government going to set up that retrenchment fund to assist workers in such a situation?

  3. This is a problem with second and third tier companies. They will throw the workers to the wolves at the sign of financial trouble.

The Human Resource should be watching these kind of companies with extra care.

  5. WHEN THE COMPANIES MAKE PROFITS, THEY ARE VERY
HAPPY. BUT THE MOMENT THEY DO NOT MAKE PROFITS
THEY CLOSE THE COMPANY AND WALK AWAY QUIETLY.
    WHAT SUBRAMANIAM (MINISTER FOR lABOUR) IS DOING;
HE COULD NOT BE BOTHER IF THEY WORKERS HAVE LOST
THEIR JOBS. WHO WILL FEED THEM.

WHAT THE GOVT IS DOING – SLEEPING OR QUARRELLING AMONG THEMSELVES THIS LABOUR MINISTER IS USELESS – SHOULD BE DISMISSED.
THEN WHEN HE LOSES THE JOB, THEN ONLY HE KNOWS WHAT IS HARDSHIP.

THIS IS HOW THE CAPITALISM WORKS – DESTROYING THE WORKERS AND THEIR RIGHTS. THE GOVT HELPS ONLY
THE CAPITALISTS AND NOT THE WORKERS. THROW THEM
OUT IN THE NEXT GENERAL ELECTION. WE NEED A LBOUR
MINISTER WHO REALLY CARES FOR WORKERS IN THIS COUNTRY.

THE CURRENT MAN IS A MAEDICINE MAN – HE DOES NOT KNOW THE HARDSHIP OF WORKERS. HE SHOULD BE
SACKED AND SACKED IMMEDIATELY. WHEN A MAN AND
HIS FAMILY IS HUNGRY, THEY MAY DO ANYTHING – IF
    NEED BEN EVEN HARMING OTHERS.
